Old Practice in a New Era: Rasa as the Basis of Self-Censorship in Kompas Daily Newspaper
No full textRasa as an element of self-censorship has never been adequately discussed within the study of Indonesian media. This paper will show that for Kompas, the biggest national newspaper in Indonesia, rasa – a central element in Javanese value, has been the basis of their self-censorship. Whereas other media use “universal†standard journalism as a basis for news selection and news production, Kompas elaborates rasa in their day-to-day practice of news making process. While presenting how rasa has been brought into practice within Kompas newsroom in the recent times, this article also argues that this kind of journalism practice can be traced back to the authoritarian period of the New Order regime. This paper argues that even though rasa is a cultural entity, underlying its manifestation into practice is actually picturing the hidden political and economic interest of Kompas journalists as minority group in Indonesia. This study bridges the gap within Indonesian media theories, which separate the political economy factors and the cultural factors as the main forces influencing media operation
Conceptuality of Unreflective Actions in Flow: McDowell-Dryfus Debate
No full textThe objective of this paper is to supplement Gottlieb’s challenge to Dryfus who claims that concepts are not operative in expert’s unreflective actions. First, concepts that an agent develops over time with practice, starting from the stage of novelty, become deeply rooted and persist through his expertise stage, according to common sense. It is unlikely that such rooted concepts become inoperative just when it is time for the agent to put them to use during the time that he is in the zone (i.e., in flow). Second, an expert's inability to remember reasons behind his actions while he is in the zone is insufficient to prove that concepts are inoperative when he is acting in the zone.  For an agent to not remember reasons as such could more likely be a consequence of the adequacy of his minimized reflections on his maximized (i.e. expert level) concepts, while he is in such a state. Moreover, not recalling every reason behind every step of an agent’s actions in the zone could be a consequence of his maximum concentration on successful processing and coordination of the task at hand, as opposed to committing his finite mental capacities to memorizing the reasons behind his step-by-step actions when he is performing an expert level action in the zone. Third, I point out to the prevalence of examples when experts or observers provide testimony about use of concepts to strategize or review actions before, during, and after their ‘in the zone’ actions (e.g., review of video replays of a game or a tournament on sports channels), which supports the operations and conceptuality of unreflective actions in flow
Competitiveness between Ethnic Malays and Ethnic Chinese in Malaysia
Get PDFPrevious research have compared competi-tive behaviour between participants of different nationali-ties, profession and gender. This current research investi-gates competitive behaviour between a multiethnic sample from Malaysia. Ethnic Malay and ethnic Chinese Malaysi-ans were primed to compete in a singing competition and completed a Revised Competitive Index questionnaire. Re-sults showed that ethnic Chinese were more competitive and enjoyed competing more than ethnic Malays. There were also significant differences in gender with females being more competitive, enjoyed competing and were more contentious than males. These results are discussed in terms of previous research on cultural, socio-political poli-cies and gender sensitivities
Analysis of Polish Primitive Ponies Migration under Registration of the Global Positioning System
No full textThe aim of the study was to determine the influence of environmental conditions on the migration of a herd of Polish primitive ponies (Polish Konik) held in the reserve area of 664.57 ha. In the first stage of the study (April 2011) there were 11 horses (6 mares, 1 stallion, and 4 foals), and in the second stage (April 2012) - 18 horses (7 mares, 1 stallion, 4 yearlings and 6 foals). The movement of a herd of horses was observed on the basis of indications of Ecotone camera's GPS and Google Maps. A total of 57 maps were analyzed. The 7 habitats and weather conditions were taken into account. The results showed that in both stages of the study the herd usually stayed in the meadows in the mornings and afternoons and in the ancient forest from afternoon to night. The changes in air temperature has significantly affected the frequency and range of the daily migration of horses. At higher air temperatures the herd often migrated, but the range of its stay in a particular place was shorter than at lower temperatures. The choice of habitats by a herd of primitive horses may be an indication of organization of their maintenance

The Evaluation of Post-Keynesian Economics A Comparative Analysis
Get PDFIn this article, we will make a comparative analysis of the evaluation and the developments in the Post-Keynesian Economics and then give the properties of Post-Keynesian Economics in terms of their assumptions and methodology, and their macroeconomic models; later on we will discuss the current state of Post-Keynesian Economics, again based on a comparative analysis. Post-Keynesian Economics was developed in the mid ‘80s as a reaction not only against New Classical School but also against New Keynesian economists because the assumptions and hence the conclusions of the latter were not deemed Keynesian enough. Keynesian Economics was mainstream both in the USA and Europe, both in academic circles and in the field of implementation by governments and Central Banks from 1936 and WW II up to the ‘70s. The debate that took place during this period between Neo-Keynesian economists in the USA and Neo-Classical economists that led to the Neo-Classical Synthesis and the reaction of Orthodox Keynesian Economists in the UK to Neo-Classical Synthesis will be referred to later. Keynesian economics here embraces both Neo-Keynesian economists and Orthodox Keynesian economists as mainstream against the Traditional Classical and the Neo-Classical System. Today, we witness that at present New Keynesian School is more widespread and influential compared to Post-Keynesian. One possible reason is that the former school sprang up in the USA while the latter basically in the UK; and USA today is much more influential worldwide compared say to the times when Keynes lived. But this should not be the sole or even the major reason why Post-Keynesianism is less popular. The reason which would likely explain the difference in popularity is that in their normative value judgments Post-Keynesian economists assign a heavy weight to improving income distribution while New Keynesian economists, on the whole, are less concerned with this goal

Implicit Conflict Talk: An Introduction
No full textDiffering from previous studies which not only focused on explicit conflict talk but also considered it as the central subject for research, this paper classifies conflict talk into two types, “implicit conflict talk†(ICT for short) and “explicit conflict talk†(ECT for short). It first presents a working definition to ICT and draws a dividing line between ICT and ECT from three aspects. It then discusses how ICT relates to other types of conflict talk, such as indirect conflict talk and cool conflict talk. It goes further to discuss the organizations of ICT: its local organization—adjacency pair and its overall organization—pre-sequences and insertion sequence. The whole research is done by illustrating 12 examples from well-known literature, popular movies and television series both in English and Chinese.
