Strengthening of masonry using natural fibers bonding with highly deformable adhesives
Strengthening of cracked masonries of poor construction using composite materials of high strength and stiff adhesives of low deformability, like lime and cement mortars or epoxy resins, does not increase significantly the capacity of masonries in seismic areas. This is because of the stress concentration occurrence. The use of highly deformable materials as adhesive and matrix allows reducing peaks of stress concentration in weak brittle substrates, causing increase of composite strengthening efficiency. In the paper, there were tested masonry units (bricks Rosso Vivo - A6R55W) strengthened by GFRP, BFRP, CFRP and BBFRP fibers bonded on epoxy resin and highly deformable polymer PS. The Single Lap Shear Test was used for comparison of stiff and deformable matrix and adhesive materials, bonding various fibers to the brittle substrate. The significant strength increase of the tested masonry specimens was obtained in the case of the use of highly deformable interface materials than of barely deformable bonding materials. Lower level of the shear stress in the substrate results in increasing of load capacity of masonries, thus applying of the highly deformable polymer PS as a matrix and an adhesive to the weak masonry substrate is more advantageous than classically using stiff epoxy adhesives. It was confirmed by other laboratory and insitu tests, in which GFRP and BFRP grids bonded on the polymer PS adhesive were applied for strengthening of masonry and concrete structural elements
Improved Seismic Imaging through Prestack Depth Migration using Synthetic Seismic Data
A necessary requirement for a reliable seismic depth imaging is to have an accurate estimation of the earth velocity model. Seismic depth imaging fundamentally consists of computation of two way travel time and downward extrapolation of the observed wave field through a suitable algorithm. The Prestack velocity analysis and model building tools need to be combined to obtain an accurate velocity model. The methodology involves interval velocity building using coherency inversion and picking of residual moveout to get the updated velocity model. The Prestack depth migration (PSDM) is then performed with this refined velocity model. The results from the Prestack time migration (PSTM) and PSDM using 3D synthetic seismic data are discussed

Cecilia Manguerra Bainard’s Oriental Oriental “Magdalenaâ€: A Linguistic Reinvention
Critical at this point in the postmodern society is ‘an idea’ nuanced in myriad voices. This paper contends that in the Philippine context there may be very little room for this type of linguistic exploration but is enough to exhibit the existing engagement of writers with the never-ending phenomenon of interpretation, that is, a particular meaning is contingent to one’s “situational frameâ€. Simply put, two similar structures/codes/words are associated with multiple meanings. More so, these modes of interpretation will eventually affect one’s capacity to assign an array of codes to build upon the very image one intends to create. In this paper Magdalena in Cecilia Manguerra-Brainard’s Magdalena is thought to be the embodiment of the Biblical Magdalena sought to be determined by linguistic limitations in the context of the author herself. She is exactly the very image of a woman that the author, in her capacity, would wish to create given her own situational frame----her milieu. Likewise, as the reader engages himself with the text, another frame is recreated so that the meaning becomes ultimately unstable in a continuous regression. Meaning-making incidence is primordially seen in this study as the crux of the matter by which different ‘situational frames’ can be understood as such. The character, Magdalena, is seen in that respect as it largely depends on how such relations are created between the signifier and the signified. Dwelling much on Saussure’s perspective, the meaning that is evidently explored which gives Magdalena ‘the identity’ is not only drawn from the characteristics nor from her inner sensibility as a person but from the intricate connections that surround the perceived object of woman through which binary oppositions are thought to emerge
The Exploration of Paradox and Chance of International Cooperation under Global Environmental Governance
The Industrial Revolution has unveiled the development of global capitalism. States, corporations and individuals are accumulating capital for desire. While consuming resource on earth, it is confirmed by IPCC in the 4th evaluation report that human activities are the main reason for global warming. In the past decades, global warming has become the main important issue in international society. It reflects that the globe is undertaking a revolution, which takes low-carbon development as the core under the challenge climate risk and the security of resource. The states are confronting the decision paradox of the state's individual interest and the global public interest. Despite the fact that the state plays the main role in international anarchy society, it is obstructed by the lack of supra-nation organization to force the states to obey international regime. Therefore, it is difficult to solve the problem of collective action problem, free rider problem and dilemma of common aversions…etc. Those things will influence the result of environmental regime. The state or non-state actor reaches good outcome with systematic collaboration or cooperation. However, the governance trend of international systematic collaboration has usually ignored or weakened the aspect of power. During the process of global environmental governance, power may represent in multiple or sequent operational ways, or jump out of the role, which take nation as the main and traditional role to exercise power. Because the regime has compulsory problem, deviation, privilege of regime and unfair confined actions, studying multiple aspects of power operation during governance could help us understand the paradox of international cooperation in order to explore the chance of international cooperation
Consumption Profile and Usage Pattern of Selected Indigenous Foodcrops in Okigwe Local Government Area, Imo-State
The study assessed the consumption profile and usage pattern of selected indigenous foodcrops in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. A well-structured and pilot tested questionnaire was used for the study. Simple random sampling technique of balloting without replacement was used to select the sample. Ten out of the fourteen communities in Okigwe were randomly selected. A total of 300 respondents were used for the study; thirty from each community. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Result showed that the foodcrops; Ocimum gratissimum, Gnetum africanum, Gongronema latifolia, Piper guineense, Carica papaya, Tetracapidium conophorum, vernonia amygdalina and Telferia occidentalis were commonly consumed vegetables, seed and fruit in both rural and urban communities of Okigwe. There was however low consumption of Solanum species. Ocimum gratissimum, Gongronema latifolia, Gnetum africanum, Carica papaya and vernonia amygdalina, were found to be medicinal plants. Gnetum africanum , Tetracapidium conophorum, Telferia occidentalis and vernonia amygdalina were cash crops. Most problems encountered in using these foodcrops include the labourious processing for vernonia amygdalina, high fuel consumption of Tetracapidium conophorum during cooking; seasonality and lack of appropriate preservative methods for the vegetables and fruit
The Importance of Intercultural Fluency in Developing Clinical Judgment
The concept of intercultural fluency emerged from the data analysis of a recent study that explored internationally educated nurses’ (IENs) experience and understanding of clinical judgment when engaged in a simulated clinical environment. I observed that one’s prior sociocultural experiences and subjectivity have significance in the context of nursing care and patient outcomes. Further, this subjectivity can facilitate the development of expertise, which is a significant factor that can support IENs’ transition to nursing practice. In this context, intercultural fluency refers to a process that allows one to regress and progress on the continuum of novice to expert, as identified by Benner (1984). Benner’s model has been modified here to acknowledge that movement along the continuum is multidirectional and dependent on the social, cultural, or sociocultural context of a situation. The modified model illustrates that one may be a novice in one setting but an expert in another. The concept of intercultural fluency explains how one’s expertise can regress when one is in an unfamiliar situation or when one encounters cultural differences. This paper provides potential approaches to apply the concept of intercultural fluency in both the education of IENs and the nursing profession
Awareness of Dengue Fever among the Urban Youth in Colombo and its Suburbs, Sri Lanka in November 2014
The study was conducted to assess the knowledge regarding dengue infection that the laymen should have specifically in facing the consequences that comes after acquiring the infection. Dengue fever is a serious disease condition going on in Sri Lanka which is transmitted by carrier mosquitos Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. According to the epidemiology unit of health ministry Sri Lanka, 57.82% out of 23,355 cases reported in the year 2014 by July are from the western province. In this research dengue awareness among young people in Colombo and its suburbs, especially after acquiring the infection is assessed, in November 2014.The objective of this study was to assess the dengue awareness and knowledge that the laymen should have especially in facing the events that comes after acquiring the infection, among the youth in Colombo and its suburbs. A descriptive study was done on 150 individuals residing in Colombo and its suburbs within the age range of 16-25 years using a simple online questionnaire, which was provided to the participants via a popular online social network. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics. Though 90% of the participants knew common signs and symptoms of fever, only 48% knew the specific symptoms of dengue fever. 66% knew that the same set of drugs given for general body aches cannot be given in dengue fever. The only satisfactory result obtained was that 86% knew blood tests are done to detect dengue. Though only 16% of the participants had sufficient knowledge on contra indicated food, 66% knew the reasons for the contra indication, showing the overall knowledge in contraindicated food is poor. Only 32% had a clear idea on the popular indigenous practice of papaya leaf extracts as a treatment, that is there is only a possibility of curing dengue. 86% knew that some official should be informed when there is an infection going on in an area, other than hospitalization, while only 52% knew where and whom to inform. The study revealed that the urban youth in Sri Lanka lacks sufficient awareness and knowledge that they should have in facing the events that comes after acquiring the infection

Converged Velocity Field for Rotors by a Blended Potential Flow Method
Potential-flow solutions for rotor induced flow by the He method give good convergence on the disk but can provide only a crude approximation off of the disk. The Morillo-Duffy formulation can give all three components off the disk, but the results converge poorly on the disk. Furthermore, Morillo-Duffy solutions converge very slowly for the velocity downstream in the limit as wake skew angle approaches 90º edgewise flow). In this work, new variables––called the Nowak-He variables––are introduced that provide both the He velocity and the Morillo-Duffy velocity from a single set of states. In addition, an approximate downstream velocity field is obtained from the adjoint theorem thatgives the exact downstream velocity as skew angle approaches 90º. The blending of these three velocity fields is shown to give robust and accurate convergence to the potential-flow equations at all flight conditions
