How Pragmatics Leads to a Better Interpretation of Poetry: A Discourse Stylistic Study of D.H. Lawrence's Poem "Sorrow"

    Get PDF
This paper is a serious attempt to show how pragmatics can be utilized in the linguistic analysis and interpretation of poetry. It supports the claim that a particular literary text may have more than one reading that leads to different interpretations of that text. The readers' own experiences, the paper claims, play a vital role in creating different readings of one single literary text. Given the fact that in pragmatics an utterance may have more than one meaning depending upon the mutual background information between the addresser and the addressee, the researcher takes advantage of this very fact and uses it in the analysis and interpretation of the poem. The poem concerned is treated as a dialogue between the poet and the reader or the analyst, in which the latter tries to get totally involved in the events of the text (poem). It is worth noticing that only pure linguistic considerations are behind the selection of D. H. Lawrence for conducting this study

‘Gender-Neutrality’ Against ‘Gender Equality:’ Evading the Anti-feminist Backlash

    No full text
This research primarily investigates the complexities of gender-biased policy in education discourse in the name of promoting ‘gender-equality’ which envisions to empowering women. This study also vigilances the inevitable antifeminist backlash resulted from the implementation of these policies in the socio-economical context of any developing country. Further, it traces out the patterns of transformations required exploring two other policy areas; media discourse and social work. Undertaking extensive theoretical research and empirical evidences, this study contributes a new conceptual framework to the established discourse of gender and policy by redressing the so called ‘equality concept’ of feminism

Recently, the language of one of the oldest Turkic written records, which are dated back to VII-IX centuries, the Orhon Old Turkic monuments are studied in different aspects, considering that these inscriptions contain important historical, linguistic and cultural data on Old Turkic period. In addition, the language of Old Turkic inscriptions, as the earliest valuable written data for language reconstruction and establishment of genetic relations of modern Turkic languages, is still a frequent subject in Turkological studies, as well as in Altaic studies.Suffixation is widely used productive word formation in Old Turkic as well as in Modern Turkic languages as an agglutinative type of languages. The study of suffixal morphemes in the language of Old Turkic inscriptions is important in reconstruction of archetypes, etymological base of suffixes and historical development of word formation process of Modern Turkic languages. This paper presents a detailed description of suffixes in Old Turkic inscriptions, giving the morphemic –structural, semantic and etymological analyses and historical development of derivations in modern Turkic languages

Technical Engineering for Catalytic Reduction of Nitrous Oxide Emissions

    No full text
Production of nitric acid is the major emission source of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide N2O. High temperature catalytic decomposition of N2O by installing a secondary catalyst has been applied at a nitric acid plant in Devnya, Bulgaria. A reconstruction of the ammonia burning reactors was done in august 2012 in order to increase the thickness of the secondary catalyst layer from 28 mm to 60 mm. Nitrous oxide concentration has been monitored for 5 year period – from 2010 to 2014. Monitoring results indicate that the effectiveness of N2O catalytic decomposition depends on the thickness of the secondary catalyst layer - increasing the layer thickness twice leads to over 60 % reduction of the maximum registered and annual average concentrations of N2O. Increasing the thickness of the secondary catalyst layer enhances the effectiveness of high temperature N2O decomposition, which is essential for the parties to the United Nations framework convention on climate change and the Kyoto protocol regarding the fulfillment of their quantitative commitments for greenhouse gas emission reduction

Representation Of Harmony In Javanese Culture In Building Design Of Kauman Yogyakarta

    No full text
Kauman Settlement in Yogyakarta, Indonesia is an urban village settlement located inside the complex of Kraton Yogyakarta (Palace of Yogyakarta). At first, the settlement was a facility provided by Sultan Hamengku Buwono for the abdi dalem (employees) of Masjid Gedhe (Great Mosque of the Palace of Yogyakarta). Social, political and cultural changes have occurred for approximately three centuries, from the Dutch Colonialism era up to now. These changes have both physical and non-physical effects to lives of the people and the shape of the settlement. Physically, the building designs have become more heterogenous, albeit without neglecting the basic concept of Javanese traditional architecture. The process of building and developing the settlement is supported by Javanese cultural values devoutly practiced by the settlers. The Javanese tradition does not fade out even though other cultures have interfered and influenced the traditional culture. In order to understand how the people of Kauman Yogyakarta shape their settlement in relation to the traditional Javanese values they are practicing, observation of literature, collection of field data and interviews for the purposes of analysis are conducted. Kauman Yogyakarta today is a settlement with a distinctive feature, a place of traditional Javanese culture amidst the business center of modern Yogyakarta

Enablers That Positively Impact Implementation of Organizational Change

    Get PDF
This study analyzes the enablers identified by Organization Development (OD) practitioners from interpretivist’s view as being necessary for positive change to happen in organization. Through semi-structured interviews with six OD practitioners from three organizations that elicit their experiences of change initiatives, nine enablers were found that span across the three dimensions of content, context and process suggested in Armenakis and Bedeian’s [1] Integrated Theoretical Framework for change. The research data also indicates that the interdependence of these three change dimensions increases the level of change recipients’ commitment towards successful implementation of change, and suggests that the intangible dimensions of context, as compared to the tangible dimensions of content and process, is found to require more attention from OD practitioners in order for change to be successfully implemented

Cash is King: An Easy Way to Understand Debits and Credits

    Get PDF
In Accounting, it is a well-known problem that many students often have difficulty in deciding whether to debit or credit an account to increase its balance. After practicing and teaching Accounting for more than forty years, the authors have developed a simple, practical and fault-proof method of handling debits and credits--the Cash is King method. Ten representative examples are provided to demonstrate how to use the Cash is King Method to assist the students handle debits and credits and guide them in recording all accounting transactions correctly

Transforming Urban Morphology and Environmental Perfornances via IMM® The Case of PortoMaravilha in Rio de Janeiro.

    No full text
IMM, Integrated Modification Methodology, is a holistic, multiscale and multi-stage, iterative process, applied to urban contexts seen as Complex Adaptive Systems, for improving their metabolism as well as their energy performances. In IMM cities are energy-using systems in their own right and they consume energy in varying level of efficiency. City as CAS is a specific type of complex system with adaptive and resilience ability and its final energy consumption and related performance is different than the sum of its heterogeneous element’s performance. Main headline of the current paper is to focus on how urban morphology is correlated with urban sustainability and energy performance and to demonstrate how an existing urban assessment (Porto Maravilha, in Rio de Janeiro) can be reformed into a lower energy consumption system and a more liveable and sustainable context. This paper wishes to demonstrate how this design methodology can contribute through integrated design optimization to address the challenges of urban growth and environmental issues simultaneously. Actually an Urban modification theory based on an integrated approach can help to sharpen a better comprehension of the different performances of different urban assessment and contribute to climate mitigation and emission reduction, integrating Design Principles with the issue of saving natural resources. In IMM DOPs (design Ordering Principles) are tools/instruments used to arrange the structure of the CAS. The application of these principles affects the CAS’s structure and its performances. In IMM, DOP’s are associated with indicators, a core set of elements used in the process for comparing the characteristic performance of the CAS before and after the transformation occurred. This paper using a specific and challenging case study shows that urban transformation can be performed, retrofitted and monitored with the final goal of achieving a more sustainable arrangement. The authors intended to examine how a local design area located in the dense core of Rio (Porto Maravilha) can affect transformation of the entire CAS (the city of Rio de Janeiro) towards more sustainable development of some of the city’s main concerns, mitigating marginal growth, low performances and a growing pollution as well as promoting social inclusion and a more liveable environment

A Proposal for an Empirical Approach to the Re-creation of Vehicle Drive Cycles

    No full text
Vehicles such as buses, delivery trucks, mining equipment, and motorsport vehicles often repeat a highly definedpattern, route, or track during normal use. For these vehicles, standard dynamometer drive cycles are of little use. In this paperit is proposed that deriving a vehicle drive cycle from empiricaldata collected from on-board vehicle sensors would produce moreaccurate vehicle characteristic predictions for special purposevehicles. This study answers the question “Is it possible to userecorded vehicle data to replicate a real world driving scenariofor the purpose of vehicle diagnostics?†To reduce the complexityof the project, an electric go-kart is to be used as test vehicle
