Energy-Saving Periodic Flight at Transonic Speeds Abstract:

    Get PDF
We examine possible energy saving by periodicchanges in speed and altitude relative to steady state cruise, inthe transonic regime. We develop a theoretical model of twophase periodic flight with altitude variation in the transonicregime and compare it with a steady horizontal flight at thesame average speed. The model predictions are verified by windtunnel experiments. For example, by periodically acceleratingfrom M=0.7 to M=1.1 while losing altitude, and then climbingback to the original height while decelerating, one can achievesavings of about 20% relative to steady flight at the sameaverage speed and constant altitude.Â

Automatic and Semi-Automatic Test Generation for Introductory Linguistics Courses Using Natural Language Processing Resources and Text Corpora

    No full text
This paper describes a collection of Natural LanguageProcessing (NLP) modules which automatically generateexercises for introductory courses on structural linguistics andEnglish grammar at a Canadian University. While there is a growing demand for electronic exercises, online testing tools, and self contained linguistics and grammar courses, the exercises and tests offered on companion websites for popular textbooks consist largely of multiple choice type questions. The modules create exercises to practice and test part-of-speech identification, morphological analysis of complex words, and the analysis of sentences into phrase structure trees. They are part of an infrastructure capable of delivering instructional material, exercises for for self assessment, and online testing tools for courses which either use blended instruction or are taught exclusively online. Modules which are work in progress will be briefly discussed in the final section of this paper.  Â

Learning via Blogging: The ESL/EFL Perspective

    No full text
The use of technology in language learning is not an unfamiliar concept. ‘Weblogs’ or ‘Blogs’ are a type of technological category that allows writing personal journals online that can be published and viewed over the web. Even though blogs are being used for personal, educational, journalistic and commercial purposes worldwide nowadays, it is not a common practice for the non-native English users. This paper shows how blogs can be an effective tool for “English as a Foreign Languageâ€/ “English as a Second Language†(EFL/ESL) users of non-native English speakers in order to improve their English skills. It also explains how blogging not only can help in improving the basic language skills of the blog users, but also in developing their other skills like communicative and critical thinking abilities

Teaching with Technology: The Role of the Instructional Coach

    No full text
The Teaching with Technology professional development model was developed to create a comprehensive technology plan that would support teaching and learning in teacher education courses. This study explains how an instructional technology coaches help faculty transform their teaching by giving them new tools, information and skills

Measures for Success in Dam Bottom Outlet Design

    No full text
The present paper investigates measures for successful design of dam bottom outlets. First, some of definitions and functions of bottom outlets are provided. Associated challenges and solutions will be discussed. Different parts of bottom outlets like intake structures, conduit, control structure and outlet structures are discussed and measures for successful design for each of them are presented with related design cases. Also risk management measures for ensuring successful performance of bottom outlets are discussed with proper examples

Deliverability of Wells in Shallow Confined Aquifers of Non-Integer Spatial Dimensions

    No full text
We propose a generalized methodology to predictthe deliverability of wells in fractional drainage areas. Afractional model is characterized by a single term power-lawvariation of the rock properties. Such a model may provide amore realistic alternative than the traditional homogeneousreservoir model. For example, the traditional models may not be applicable for sparse fracture networks. We assume the validity of the fractional model and find that the homogeneous solution is included in the generalized model as a special case. Simultaneous solution of the reservoir- and vertical lift equation leads to an algebraic equation of second degree. Hence, the prediction of the flow rate delivered into a pipe-line at any pressure is easily available. We investigate the sensitivity of the flow rate to variations in wellbore head, reservoir and flow string properties

The Heterogeneity of the Eurozone Populations in Deposits’ Possession and Its Implications for Credit Institutions’ Funding Stability

    Get PDF
The European Union single liquidity standards - Liquidity Coverage Ratio and Net Stable Funding Ratio – point out household deposits as preferred, stable funding for credit institutions, under normal and stress conditions. The introduction of standards affects not only funding stability of entities, but also their future development opportunities. In countries with populations of low propensity to hold deposits this impact is expected to be negative. The implementation of common standards in a group of diverse countries of the Eurozone seems to be a task of compromised effectiveness. During the last financial and economic crises individual populations were unequally capable to place deposits with credit institutions, leading to significant differences in their average levels per capita in the member states. The aim of this paper is to identify the determinants of the Eurozone’s geographic disparities in the populations’ ability to provide deposits to domestic credit institutions, in selected years: 2006, 2008 and 2012. The indicated periods refer to significantly different macroeconomic background. The results of empirical analysis demonstrate the priority impact of precise variables, referred to the financial market and national economies on the formation of the levels of household deposits per capita in the Euro area. The variables representing household features appear as less important for the considered problem

Adaptive Fuzzy Sliding Mode Controller for Attitude Coordinated Control in Spacecraft Formation

    Get PDF
The attitude coordinated control problem of a spacecraft formation in leader-follower approach is considered in this paper. An adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control scheme is designed to achieve tracking and synchronization in spacecraft formation in the presence of model uncertainties and external disturbances. The proposed control law consists of two parts: equivalent control and switching control. In order to attenuate high-frequency chattering caused by the switching control, the adaptive fuzzy control is utilized to approximate the sign function of the switching control. Moreover, fuzzy rules are employed to smooth the switching control based on the sliding surface.Lyapunov theory is applied to proof the stability of the closedloop system. Finally, simulation results and comparative analysisare carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method

The Social Networking Sites (SNS) Facebook and OpenStudy as Student Learning Forum

    No full text
Even though the popularity of Social Networking Sites has proliferated over the years, however, its educational affiliation has gone largely unexplored. Therefore, this paper primarily examined how information was communicated on the Social Networking Sites (SNS), Facebook and OpenStudy, as part of Liverpool John Moores University Summer Semester 2012 Mass Communication students' learning experience. It studied the effect of students' educational usage of Social Networking Sites, the way in which students' learning resources were shared and exchanged online in a Facebook closed group named “LJMU Mass Comm Union'12â€. The appeal and motivational strategies adopted by Social Networking Sites through elements of edutainment which 'repackaged' online learning as a fun and leisure activity was also considered

Supporting Nursing Leadership by the Implementation of an increased Supervisory Role

    Get PDF
Clinical nurse leadership is essential for the provision of high quality patient care. Recent research has highlighted the need for all Senior Charge Nurses (SCNs) to be equipped to deliver effective ward management, staff development and ultimately a positive patient experience. The provision of ‘supervisory hours’ is a vital component of an SCN role, enabling the effective leadership of their teams. This paper describes the increased supervisory role implemented by the Leading Better Care program within one Health Board area of Scotland. Mixed methods research (online survey n=52 and in-depth qualitative interviews n=12) explored the experiences of SCNs using their increased supervisory time and its perceived impact on clinical practice. Findings demonstrate that increased supervisory time positively impacted several key areas of clinical practice. Although the increased supervisory role empowered SCNs and promoted their professional development, they require greater role clarity, managerial support and leadership development to reduce role stress and promote future career aspirations
