Water soluble analog complexes were obtained in a high yield by methylation of TPyP in [Ln2(TPyP)2(Pc)] form
Design,Development and Evaluation of Biochemistry Virtual Laboratory for Blended Learning
Abstract— This paper examines students’ reflection on the design and development of a prototype biochemistry virtual laboratory (vLab) at the University of Hong Kong. Second year students from the MBBS programme were divided into two groups. One group (non-vLab) took part in the original didactic lecture while the other group (vLab) joined in the trial blended virtual lab learning session. The learning outcomes were evaluated by a post-lab knowledge comprehension quiz and the class performances were analyzed. In addition, students’ perceptions toward blended vLab learning experience were evaluated by questionnaires. The group with the vLab experience achieved higher quiz results. However, their evaluation and feedback with regard to the vLab learning experience were rather critical, which provided valuable insights for further improvements on the instructional design
Resurrectionis Center XX. Zmartwychwstańców in Krakow – a unique example of religious art
Abstract—In Poland in the 90s of the twentieth century with theintroduction of modern technologies for the constructionindustry, increased scope of designers in the process of shapingthe architectural forms. The technique, unlimited designpossibilities, material solutions and their availability, do notconstitute any barriers. The Modern technologies allow thecreation of unlimited structural systems in the field of solids andinterior features, an example of which is a complex of buildingsof the Seminary Assembly XX. Zmartwychwstańców Zakrzówekin Cracow (1985-1993).The Center Resurrectionis in Cracow is an innovative andoriginal work of sacred art of the twentieth century, causingadmiration and strongly affecting its audience. The complex ofbuildings, decorated in the style of surreal, characterized by ahigh value of composing objects in space, the creation ofinnovative architectural and urban planning, and the search forsolutions to highly aesthetic. The high degree of technologicaladvancement provide an idea of composing space with a varietyof textures used, and the context of concrete with other materials.Group of buildings is a continuation of exploring the aestheticpossibilities of concrete, which "turns on the Way of the FourGates (...) each time finding a different meaning for theirinvoices." The shape of the buildings has been closely associatedwith the reinforced concrete - a material which creates anunusual design possibilities, as well as shaping a new quality interms of architectural aesthetics. Use the creators of thismaterial, significantly influence the form of buildings - increasingthe scale and scope of freedom in shaping the architecture.Enabled to overcome larger spans and heights, decided tounlimited possibilities of any form and execution of architecturalthought
Designing Safer Cities - Review of Environmental Crime Prevention Strategies
Crime is influenced by multiplicity of factors such as economic, social and governmental as well as physical elements. Safety and security are basic human needs. In urban India, growth of crime has been on a steady increase and measures to reduce them are proving to be in effective. The cosmopolitan lifestyle, wide roads, state of the art facilities, peaceful and tranquil environment invite people to settle here and the same factors make the area vulnerable to criminal activates. Many incidents of crime go un-reported and unattended due to lack of timely intervention by police. The concept of crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) was first formulated by criminologist C. Ray Jeffery in the year 1971 and got further strengthened by the famous criminologists Timothy D. Crow, C. Ray Jeffery, Architect Oscar Newman, Jane Jacobs and Schlomo Angel. Safety and security within an urban environment primarily depend on (i) Surveillance - will a person committing a crime be seen by anyone, (ii) Access - who can get in and out of a place with ease, (iii) Territoriality - does anyone care for what happens around them i.e. is there a sense of belongings to the space amongst the users. At urban design level building designs, street layouts, public facilities and urban spaces can be tackled to affect the opportunity of crime and fear of crime. The authors however acknowledge some good practices in Indian cities like Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Surat where community involvement and smarter methods of surveillance have changed the urban environment and have made it much safer for the people. This paper paper attempts to identify the parameters that instigate criminal activities within an urban area and highlight the role of crime prevention strategies and the relevance of environmental criminology in current city planning and management practices for addressing security concerns in India cities
Adaptive Behavioral Profiling for Identity Verification in Cloud Computing: A Model and Preliminary Analysis
In the past few years, cloud computing has becomea new paradigm for hosting and delivering services over theInternet. Customers can directly access the resources (hardwareand software) of cloud computing services over the Internetwithout the need to have specific knowledge about the resources. This flexibility has also made cloud services more vulnerable topotential attack. A key issue is that the cloud services rely upon asimple authentication login and remain accessible to usersafterward for significant periods of time. This makes cloudcomputing services vulnerable to misuse. Well-known serviceproviders including Dropbox (2012) and Apple (2014) havesuffered from attacks, leading to sensitive information of theircustomers being exposed. As a result, there is a growing need forincreasing the trust among end-users and cloud service providersand to be able to continuously monitor users to identify potentialmisuse. User behavior profiling is one technology that has beenapplied with various technologies/services to provide continuousre-authentication of a user transparently in order to monitor andimprove the security of a system. This paper investigates thecurrent state of the art in this approach and examines itsapplicability within cloud services. A preliminary experiment isundertaken using Dropbox log data to explore the feasibility ofthe approach within this type cloud service. The initial analysis ofthe proposed approach is very encouraging and provides thebasis for proposing a novel multi-level behavioural profilingarchitecture
A quasi-experiment to evaluate the effects of a blended approach of simulation learning and podcasting on caring behaviours
Background: The need for quality nursing personnel in clinical practice expected nurse teachers to be able to impart instrumental and expressive aspects of caring behaviours to nursing students. Operating in a resource-limited higher educational context, nurse teachers are required to do so in a cost effective way. This study as part of a larger study evaluated the effects of a blended approach to learning of caring behaviours based on ‘modified’ medium-fidelity simulation scenarios and podcasting to repeat debriefs. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental, two group pre-test-post-test design. The study included 146 second year nursing students. Participants were divided into ‘intervention’ and ‘control’ groups and were asked to complete a caring behaviour inventory scale at various stages of the research study. Results: Students in the intervention group scored statistically higher, post receiving medium-fidelity simulation learning and higher post podcasting. The exposure to high fidelity simulation learning has resulted in the lower scoring in control group. Conclusions: This study highlights the value of a blended approach based on medium-fidelity simulation learning and podcasting. Successful learning of caring behaviours lies in the heart of a care-oriented teaching approach rather than the use of sophisticated technologies. This study has implications for a better practice in nursing education for developing student caring behaviours, it also has a wider implication for all vocational and non-nursing healthcare education
A Proposal for UI-flexible, Loosely-coupled Programming Learning System for Undergraduates
As the scale and the complexity of computer systems increase, the importance of programming education in universities enlarges in these days. In this paper, to improve the quality of programming education in universities, we propose a programming learning system for undergraduates who learn programming. Our proposed system provides a similar experience to pair programming by using static code analyzers as teachers, which means that the system can teach undergraduates many aspects of programming. We designed the system to have UI (User Interface) flexibility and to be loosely-coupled by using REST (Representational State Transfer) in order to increase the maintainability of the system. We implemented the system as an SPA (Single-page Web Application) in order to increase the interoperability between the system and LMSs (Learning Management Systems). We evaluated the system and conclude that the system is a great help for such undergraduates
Green Cloud Computing and Economics of the Cloud: Moving towards Sustainable Future
With the increasing popularity of cloud computingservices, it is becoming more and more important for cloudservice providers to ensure that they fulfill their responsibilitytowards the society by minimizing the environmental impact oftheir business operations. The high electricity needs ofdatacenters make cloud computing companies consume anextremely large amount of electricity. To deal with this issue, these companies are starting to adopt renewable sources ofenergy to power their datacenters for reducing the negativeenvironmental impact. The purpose of this paper is to review thegreen Cloud and economic benefits of green Cloud. Therefore, ithas been found that dynamic provisioning, multi-tenancy, serverutilization and datacenter efficiency are major factors that couldbe used to minimize the power consumption while increasingenvironmental sustainability. The paper concludes that (a)economical viability of green Cloud adoption, (b) the locationdatacenter that needs to be considered during green Cloudadoption, (c) the utility providers that provide green energy atcompetitive prices, and (d) the generation of energy at on-site willbe costly, but mixes of energy sources such as wind and coal willcost companies 13% more
Analysis of the impact of file formats for open data analytics efficiency: a case study with R
By sharing their documents many organizationsof boast of trans-parency that does not have. Why?Because the documents are pub-lished in for in which thedata are if not impossible very difficult to analyzed by themain existing exploratory data analysis, eda, software. Forreason it is very important not only to share thedocumentation but to share it in a file format that allowsthe user to analyze them easily. This paper presents theresults of a research conducted to help to solve thisproblem and it has been developed to establish which fileformats must be used to facilitate the use and analysis ofdata shared in open data sets when its used one of the maineda software like is R
