Emergency Nurses’ Experience on End-of-life Care: An Integrative Review

Emergency nurses are regarded as the key healthcare professional (HCP) in the emergency department endof-life (ED-EOL) care. The emergency nurses encountered the dying and death on a regular base. Still, they find the EOL care is another aspect and caring from their usual practice. With the successful ED-EOL care delivery, it can help to meet the needs of the imminent patients and families. Emergency nurses admired the pain and symptoms management helping the ED-EOL patients. This paper reviewed the existing literature on the emergency nurses’ perception of ED-EOL care. A systematic search of the literature published between January 2005 and January 2016 was conducted to identify published studies concerning emergency nurses’ practice and the influencing factors in EOL care provision. The final sample for this integrative review was comprised of 23 studies. It is suggested in the results of the included studies that emergency nurses’ EOL care in the clinical context could involve the care of the dying patients and their families in both physical, psychosocial and spiritual aspects. Further study of the emergency nurses and different ED-HCPs are encouraged which could make the ED-EOL care more fruitful and bright in the future

Urban Rejuvenation through Techno Art Intervention: A case of Kolkata

The images of urban spaces, at present, are manifesting dystopic imageries that are obstructing for the functioning of the public realm. Habitable space of a city should be shaped according to human purposes and to satisfy their needs. In defining urban space design, urban nodes acted as nuclei to provide access and opportunity to the people. Nodes generate out of physical traits, activities and are supported by physical spatial design and public interaction. The scale of nodes varies from large urban squares to a small park, to a partially enclosed space in front of a building, to a sidewalk. Since the cores of the cities are generally highly congested and promoted multi-layered activities, Nodes can be presented strategically to get perceptual importance. Imageability of all these spaces is dependent on the quality attributed to the physical presentation of a space that induces high probability of evoking strong images in the mind of the observer. Thus, rejuvenation of these urban nodes can act as an intervening process to regenerate habitable breathing space amongst the dystopic condition of the city. With analysis of the existing scenario of these nodes, the elements for techno-art intervention to alter the physical, tangible imageability of the nodes can possibly be identified. Thus, the paper explores the present rate of imageability of the nodes and what could be the possible art and design solutions based on the expert's opinion to intervene for the betterment of the experience of the physical space

Upcycling Macadamia Nut Shells: The effect of Particle Size and Moisture Content on 3D printed Nutshell-Plastic Composites

This paper investigates the effects of particle size and moisture content on the structure and material properties of extruded composite filaments composed of macadamia nutshell (MN) flour and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The moisture content of the MN flour was reduced to 7.05% by a three-hour drying process. The size of the particles of MN flour in the composites was varied by using different sieves; despite the size variation, a morphology study of the particles shows that the shape of the particles remains similar for each size range.  The SEM micrographs show that large voids were introduced into the sample during the extrusion process to create the filaments, with larger but less frequent voids occurring in the dried samples. The micrographs also show the samples were homogenously mixed by using the single screw extruder. The paper also examines how the optimization of printing variables were used leading to a superior sampl

An Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Idle Campus Cultural Regeneration Strategies

    No full text
There is a concern about the need for a global city to formulate urban cultural regeneration strategies to transform idle or abandoned campuses into cultural consumption spaces, which help build a town that characterizes artistic innovation, space revitalization, exhibition and performances in combination with the local culture. This study focuses on the case of the Dadong Culture and Arts Center in the Kaohsiung City of Taiwan using the SERVQUAL instrument of the service quality model to draft a questionnaire. This study uses the Impact Range-Performance Analysis (IRPA) and Impact Asymmetry Analysis (IA) to evaluate the service quality of the Center and to explore what needs improvement. Applied Management Studies and user Satisfaction Index to explore the service quality visions by internal and external as feedback on the planning for reference is a difficult task or action. The results show that the Da Dong Culture and Arts Center does not have a focused and definite development orientation and policies that lead to the lack of its unique characteristics. The Center does not satisfy the actual needs of urban residents well either, such as parking space provision, integration of the community surroundings, information disclosure on its official website, and especially the conversion of the neighborhood into a heritage district

Caregivers’ Falls Concern For Older Persons In The Singapore Community

This paper discusses the prevalence of caregivers’ concern, its impact on fall prevention strategies, falls risk awareness among older persons, clinical points and study potential. Older persons suffering from fall-related psychological concerns such as fear of falling has been well established in previous research, however little is known about caregivers’ falls concern in its relationship with the risk of older persons falling. In Singapore, families are regarded as the fundamental support system for older people. The potential influence of caregivers’ concern on the outcome of fall prevention strategies and falls risk awareness of older persons is expected given their significant involvement in the older persons’ care. However, it is difficult to accurately appreciate the impact of caregivers’ falls concern on the risk of falls among older persons in the local community given the Singaporean cultural differences and the dearth of Singaporean research on caregiver’s concern. It is promulgated in this paper that further research should address the impact of caregivers’ falls concern on fall-related issues associated with caring for an older person at risk of falling

Are nursing students in Hong Kong wellprepared for urinary incontinence care?

—Background:  Urinary incontinence is a common disorder that affects men and women of all ages. An effective management of urinary incontinence requires adequate knowledge and positive attitudes from health care professionals. Nursing students who share similar care tasks with qualified nurses should have adequate knowledge to provide quality continence care. There is little evidence to inform the knowledge and attitudes toward urinary incontinence among nursing students in Hong Kong. The purpose of this study was to examine nursing students’ urinary incontinence knowledge and attitude. Methods: A crosssectional survey was conducted in February 2017. A sample of 392 nursing students from 5 different educational institutions in Hong Kong was recruited. Two validated questionnaires, the Urinary Incontinence Knowledge Scale (UIKS) and Urinary Incontinence Attitude Scale (UIAS) were used to measure knowledge and attitudes towards urinary incontinence respectively. Results: Overall urinary incontinence knowledge was moderate (73.3%, mean 22.0/30, SD 4.4) and attitudes concerning urinary incontinence were generally positive (69.3%, mean 41.6/60, SD 4.5). There was a weak correlation between urinary incontinence knowledge and attitudes (r = 0.175, p = 0.001). A high level of interest in learning more about urinary incontinence was reported (71.2%). Conclusions: Hong Kong nursing students had moderate level of knowledge and positive attitude towards urinary incontinence. This study suggests that nursing students in Hong Kong are not well prepared to provide urinary incontinence care. There is still a need to examine the urinary incontinence course content within the nursing programme in Hong Kong

Developing and Pilot Testing a Digital Storytelling Intervention to Promote HPV Vaccination among Vietnamese American Adolescents

We co-developed digital, personal stories about human papilloma virus (HPV) and HPV vaccination with Vietnamese American (VN) mothers of vaccinated adolescents, and examined the preliminary effect of the digital storytelling (DST) intervention in a community group of VN mothers who had unvaccinated adolescents. We compared HPV-related knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and vaccination intent of VN mothers in the community group before and after viewing the digital stories (intervention). Stories 2-3 minutes in length were produced in Vietnamese and in English through a two-day workshop in collaboration with 2 VN mothers. Ten VN mothers who have unvaccinated adolescents viewed the stories and filled out an anonymous survey before and after the intervention. After the intervention, 100% (n = 10; M age = 48 years; SD = 6.72) of mothers intended to get their children vaccinated. Further, all mothers would recommend the digital stories to their relatives, friends or colleagues. This brief intervention using digital stories showed preliminary effects on promoting Vietnamese American mothers’ intent to vaccinate their adolescent children against HP

HadoopSec: Sensitivity-aware Secure Data Placement Strategy for Big Data/Hadoop Platform using Prescriptive Analytics

    No full text
Hadoop has become one of the key player in offering data analytics and data processing support for any organization that handles different shades of data management. Considering the current security offerings of Hadoop, companies are concerned of building a single large cluster and onboarding multiple projects on to the same common Hadoop cluster. Security vulnerability and privacy invasion due to malicious attackers or inner users are the main argument points in any Hadoop implementation. In particular, various types of security vulnerability occur due to the mode of data placement in Hadoop Cluster. When sensitive information is accessed by an unauthorized user or misused by an authorized person, they can compromise privacy. In this paper, we intend to address the approach of data placement across distributed DataNodes in a secure way by considering the sensitivity and security of the underlying data. Our data placement strategy aims to adaptively distribute the data across the cluster using advanced machine learning techniques to realize a more secured data/infrastructure. The data placement strategy discussed in this paper is highly extensible and scalable to suit different sort of sensitivity/security requirements
