    No full text
The Tengger desert is an arid natural regionthat covers about 36,700 km2 and is mostly in the InnerMongolia Autonomous Region in China. Since its arid naturallandscape, the vernacular architecture in the marginal regionof the desert are mostly rammed earth buildings. My researchis primarily about a comparison between the cases from twocommunities around the edge of the Tengger desert. These twocommunities are in the same unique topography and ecologicalenvironment, however, the vernacular architecture, which arecharacterized by the different historical background, nationalities and means of livelihood, shows different features. My research was based on a field work about vernacularbuilding, in the form of oral and questionnaire surveys amongvillagers and recorded major vernacular buildings. And mystudy intends to turn documentation into interpretation, andgain insight into existing differences of cultural identitiesbetween nomad andsettlement

Anxiety and Physiological Responses in Patients with First Myocardial Infarction

    Get PDF
Abstract—Myocardial infarction (MI) is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in many countries. MI in patients tends to be followed by anxiety that may contribute to developing complications. The first experience of MI was found as one factor that influences anxiety in patients. Severe and untreated anxiety has negative impacts on physiological responses as a rapid response to an infarction. Moreover, the assessment and treatment of anxiety in hospitals are commonly less undervalued. The purpose of this study was to examine the anxiety levels and physiological responses among first MI patients. This study was a descriptive study with 60 first MI patients who were admitted to ICCU of Sanglah Hospital, Bali, Indonesia. Subjects were asked to complete the anxiety instrument using the 6-item State Anxiety Inventory and Trait Anxiety Inventory. Blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration rate were assessed as clinical physiological responses of anxiety. The results revealed that more than half of the subjects were found to have moderate state anxiety (53.3%) and 48.3% showed moderate trait anxiety. 35% of patients in their first experience of MI showed a high level of state anxiety. Also, there was a statistically significant correlation between physiological responses and anxiety, however, not in systolic blood pressure. A significant number of patients with first MI were assessed as having high and moderate levels of anxiety. Thus, these results might be taken as evidence to early evaluate the anxiety of MI patients to prevent further complications

Orientation Based Accelerometer Analysis (OBAA) for Mobile Gestures: Memorable Authentication

    Get PDF
Mobile authentication today primarily relies onPersonal Identification Numbers (PINs). For PINs to be securefrom the majority of malicious users, it must contain a highnumber of digits and be entropic. Human memory generallystruggles when it attempts to recall highly entropic numericcodes. Gesture-based authentication using Quick Reference (QR)codes, and internally analyzed accelerometer data from mobiledevices, allow for sustaining a more user-friendly, memorable, and low expense alternative to PINs. This paper presents atechnique for users to capture movements of their mobile deviceby analyzing the orientation of devices and the speed at whichthese orientations transition via accelerometer data. Thesemotions are described as the user’s gesture. Gestures can be usedto identify a user, while QR codes can be used to indicate aspecific machine a user can attempt to authenticate with. A userstudy was performed and showed gesture-based authenticationresults in a more user preferred, entropic and memorableauthentication system in comparison to similar applications

Employees’ Vocational Training and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR):beyond “Primary Responsibilitiesâ€

    Get PDF
This article aims at looking at ethical issues in vocational training. It widely explores the specific role of vocational training among the set of “responsibilities†that a company could have, not only towards it stakeholders, but also towards its own workforce. Underlying the multiple unfair sources of employees’ vocational training- the unequal access to training is one of them - we try to examine the possible combinations between CSR and this human resource practice. Through a critical outlook on CSR, we analyze different levels of CSR and insist on “ethical responsibilities†– a form of responsibility that aims at recognizing the employees as ethical subjects

Playing The Game: Reform Politicians In The Cebu Traditional Political Field

    Get PDF
The study looks into the viability of reform politics in Cebu’s traditional political field. This traces how politicians labor to assert and institutionalize political settlements such as “diskarte†or rationalization and legitimacy of position. The researcher found out three sources of political “habitus†[Bourdieu’s appropriation of political structure and political culture] that formed part of Cebu City’s political institutions, namely: a.) the gatekeepers who are reform-grassroots-petty politicians at the barangay level; b.) the public interest articulators at the Sangguniang Panglungsod (City Council) level; and the c.) Archetypes who are trapo aristocratic politicians competing for the seat of mayor at the city executive office. The researcher presents six (6) purposively chosen gate keepers known as reform-grassroots-politicians at the barangay level; three (3) public interest articulators at the city council, and, three (3) mayors contesting for the city’s seat of power -- the executive office in the local government unit of Cebu City. The researcher assessed each one according to their narratives as politicians, their distinctive identity claims, their views on Cebu’s political dynamics and political norm, their annual revenue generation and budgetary allocations and their understanding on the following institutions: a.) the cabo system (system of enrolment under specific patrons), b.) the lansaderas (ballot switching schemes during elections) and the c.) inangayan (vote buying system). The study shows that the “habitus†of the aforementioned three institutions [gate keepers, public interest articulators, and archetypes] are so inter-twined that the whole field cannot operate independent from any one of them. However, for the purpose of this paper, the habitus of the gate keepers is focused. In the paper, the three habitus have a hybridized multiplicity of complex structure-culture-nexus now distinctively operative in Cebu City’s political field that have reforms rooted only at the grassroots level and not yet embedded in the entire structure of the political order.Neo-patrimonialism is still present although held in control due to the pressures from the grassroots below who constantly assert the legitimacy of political change in terms of assets reforms and assets redistribution. Meanwhile the go-between public interest articulators stay at the middle ground in the tug-of-war between reforms and neo-patrimonial archetypal and traditional politics

Semiquantitative and Quantitative Biostratigraphy for Correlation and Depositional Environment Analysis Case Study Kedinding Hill Area, Blora, Central Java

    Get PDF
Biostratigraphy has a significant role in petroleum exploration, especially for correlation and depositional environment analysis. This research located in Kedinding Hill Area, Blora, Central Java, Indonesia. We uses semiquantitative graphic correlation method and quantitative constrained cluster analysis with data taken from measuring section of Kedinding River Track (Section-1) and Kalen River Track (Section-2). Both sections generate crossover in biostratigraphic event sequence that trouble the biozonation determination which resolved by Graphic Correlation Method and generate FAD Neogloboquadrina humerosa – LAD Globorotalia merotumida – LAD Globigerina venezuelana as regional biostratigraphic event sequence. Constrained Cluster Analysis method generate five cluster for depositional environment in both Section-1 and Section-2. Depositional environment of each cluster in Section-1 are: Cluster 1 (unpredictable), Cluster 2 (deep middle – outer shelf), Cluster 3 (outer shelf), Cluster 4 (outer shelf), Cluster 5 (outer shelf – upper slope), meanwhile in Section-2: Cluster 1 (inner shelf), Cluster 2 (deep middle – outer shelf), Cluster 3 (deep middle shelf), Cluster 4 (deep middle shelf), Cluster 5 (outer shelf – upper slope)

A survey of the perceived lifestyle risks of breast cancer in menopausal and postmenopausal women in Hong Kong

    Get PDF
Breast cancer ranks as the most common cause of cancer death in women. If menopausal and postmenopausal women know the lifestyle risks associated with breast cancer and its preventive measures, they will make appropriate choices in order to enjoy their life and have a better chance of preventing this disease. This study attempted to explore perceived beliefs with regard to the lifestyle risks associated with breast cancer among menopausal and postmenopausal women in Hong Kong. A survey was designed that used a self-reporting questionnaire to assess the perceived beliefs of 223 women. Results showed that more than half of the participants held misconceptions about lifestyle breast cancer risks. Only those women who were well-educated and were worried about having breast cancer performed breast screening for cancer. The findings of this study suggest that health care professionals should channel resources to educate menopausal and postmenopausal women about the risks of breast cancer and to promote awareness of breast wellness and the value of breast cancer screening
