Ensuring integrity in educational assessment
This paper recommends an approach to educational assessment of students who are blind or vision impaired which takes into account both issues of integrity and educational accommodations that 'level the paying field'. The paper provides a taxonomy of the variety of educational assessment accommodations available for formal and informal tasks in assessing students who are blind or vision impaired. Teachers can enhance educational integrity by ensuring the participation of students in the development of appropriate educational accommodations, and by facilitating the development of students' self-advocacy and problem solving skills
Mental Health Promotion and Early Intervention in Early Childhood and Primary School Settings: A Review
Response Ability is an initiative of the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing (the Department). Since 2000, the project team has provided free multimedia resources and practical support for universities and teacher educators, addressing pre-service education for secondary teachers. The focus of the existing Response Ability resources is on the mental health and wellbeing of secondary school students. The use of these resources is designed to encourage pre-service teachers to engage with and promote social and emotional health in their teaching practices. In 2006, the Response Ability project was directed by the Department to advise how the scope of these resources could be broadened to support primary and early childhood teacher education. As part of this, a large-scale scoping study was undertaken to inform discussions about mental health promotion and early intervention strategies in primary and early childhood settings. A structured literature review was completed as part of this process, examining three key questions
Children being children: the value of an “importance filter”
The perspectives of young children are of considerable interest to the community yet remains largely misunderstood. This paper posits that children demonstrate an optimistic view of the world and the future that is also encased in a deeper understanding of key global, local, and social issues than previously thought. This study challenges the notion that children are either adversely affected by knowledge or ignorant of global issues outside their control. The effects of external media and the reputed social decay of society and the pessimistic worldview reportedly held by young children are questioned. In acknowledging the children’s understanding of key issues, this research identifies that children engage in an internal metacognitive processing of information that allows them to maintain their optimistic view of the world. This paper introduces the concept of an Importance Filter, an internal information processing mechanism that assists children in making sense of their world
An investigation of assessment in fully asynchronous online math courses
This study is based on a voluntary survey of all listed Fall 2006 State University of New York (SUNY) Learning Network (SLN) mathematics faculty. The survey focuses on assessment in SLN math e-learning. Based on survey data, the study attempts to answer the following questions: What percentage of math e-learning courses overall, by course category and by institution (two year or four year) are proctored? In proctored and unproctored math e-learning courses, which assessment instruments are utilised and how? Comparing the two approaches, how does the practice of assessment in proctored math e-learning courses compare to the practice of assessment in unproctored math e-learning courses? Finally, what are the ten most popular strategies for assessing math e-learning courses? The paper concludes with questions, suggestions for further research and implications regarding the academic integrity of math e-learning courses
An exploration of the role of Canadian academic libraries in promoting academic integrity
The incidence of student plagiarism at Canadian universities and colleges is cause for concern. As a result, Canadian universities are increasingly using text-matching software such as Turnitin to address the problem of cut-and-paste plagiarism. An exploratory survey was conducted at Canadian research-intensive universities subscribing to Turnitin to examine the role of librarians in educating students and faculty about academic integrity. Results indicate that librarians at these institutions are actively involved in promoting academic integrity and deterring plagiarism. At most institutions surveyed, discussions of academic integrity and the ethical use of information are included in library workshops and library instructional materials. These results, while preliminary, are an important first step to encourage libraries to consider their role within universities for promoting academic integrity.

An assessment strategy that pre-empts plagiarism
Undergraduate courses in human physiology and pathophysiology often include an essay as part of the continuous assessment, with the intention of giving students experience in independently researching and writing, as well as increasing their understanding of a particular topic. Unfortunately, many of these essay questions may actually foster plagiarism because they can be answered by providing a factual explanation, which is readily available in texts and on the Internet. We describe a strategy for pre-empting such plagiarism, called the 'hypothetical condition' essay, where the instructor invents a fictitious but entirely plausible physiological condition or concept which students must evaluate and discuss. Since no specific background material is available, the student has to research the relevant normal and abnormal physiology and then use their knowledge to logically speculate on the effects of the fictitious condition, so the opportunities for plagiarism are greatly reduced. The hypothetical condition essay was trialled with a second level undergraduate human pathophysiology class in 2007. No cases of plagiarism were detected in the bulk of the essay where students presented their logical arguments on the effects of the new condition. Nor did students appear to be disadvantaged, since there was no significant difference in either the mean, or the variance, of marks among years before and after the new assessment was used. The hypothetical condition essay also appeared to foster originality and critical thought, and we suggest the concept of this type of assessment could be applied in many fields
