    Extraction of Dyes from Sunflower Petal and Their Fourier Transform Infrared Characterization

    Three solvents of different polarities (water, methanol and 1% NaOHsolution) were used to extract dyes that produced different shades fromdried sunflower (Helianthus annuus) petal. The extraction proceduresusing different solvent types were carried out separately. The dye extractswere thereafter subjected to Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry(FT-IR) analysis for characterization in terms of functional groups. Theintensities of the extracted dyes on the shade of colours obtained on piecesof cotton material varied from yellow in methanolic extract to light yellowin aqueous and black in 1% NaOH solution extracts. The results obtainedfrom the FT-IR analysis revealed the presence of several useful functionalgroups such as N-H, C=H, O-H and C=O in the extracts

    Study of Concrete Filled Unplasticized Poly-Vinyl Chloride Tubes as Columns under Axial Loading

    This article aims to examine the behavior of Unplasticized Poly- Vinyl-Chloride (UPVC) bounded reinforced columns with polypropylene fibers under axial compression. To develop this model, a no samples of concrete filled UPVC pipe (CFUT)  with different geometric properties were tested. To obtain the specimens different class pipes with three different diameters were used to investigate the sensitivity of these columns to various parameters. The effect of each variable on the ultimate strength, ductility and confinement efficiency of the samples was investigated. All specimens were compressed by applying load only to the concrete core to obtain the load-displacement variations and the corresponding deformation mode. A finite element model was developed using the proposed stress-strain variation of confined concrete with UPVC tubes to simulate axial compression of CFUT specimens. According to the results obtained, the effect of the change in diameter-thickness ratio failure stress of concrete limited by (D/t) is obtained and discussed with empirical relationship. Polypropylene fibers were found to slightly increase column strength up to a certain volume fraction, after which the strength generally experienced a decrease

    Integrated Hydrogeochemical Analysis of Stream Water in Parts of Proterozoic Shillong Basin Meghalaya, India

    Hydrogeochemical surveys were conducted in parts of the Proterozoic Shillong basin in Meghalaya to locate the unconformity-related uranium deposits, related alteration patterns, and the influence of the rock formations on the groundwater solute chemistry. Shillong Basin comprises Proterozoic metasediments and felsic volcanics of Tyrsad Formation, undeformed arenaceous Barapani Formation with intrusive granites, and metabasic sills and dykes. The groundwater quality is determined for drinking, and domestic-agro-industrial utilities using hydrogeochemical tools and physicochemical parameters. The water is acidic to slightly alkaline and has an oxidizing redox environment, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolve Solids (TDS), and major ions fell below the World Health Organization (WHO) and Indian Standards Institute (ISI) acceptable limits except for Zn, Fe, and SiO2 showing higher concentrations.The sequences of abundance of major cations and trace elements are Fe>Zn>SiO2>Ca2+>Na+ >Mg2+>K+ >U and anions as HCO3>Cl- >SO4 2- .Groundwater character was assessed by ion exchange, simple dissolution, and unusual dissolution mechanisms. The area has dominant CaHCO3, NaHCO3, and restricted CaMgHCO3 type water. Plagioclase dissolution and high SiO2 and cation exchange of Ca for Na were identified. The groundwater indices of Sodium Percent, Kelley’s Index, Sodium Adsorption Ratio, Magnesium Ratio, Electrical Conductivity, TDS, USSL, and Wilcox index were found suitable for agro-industrial uses. Permeability Index is found to be suitable in most areas and the Corrosivity Ratio shows the areas of galvanized pipes and PVC pipes to be used for water supply. AHC analysis shows three distinct groups of water types, as well as the factor analysis, also shows the three prominent factors of water types defining the dimensionality of water types.     Aeromagnetic Interpretation of Basement Structures and Geometry in Parts of the Middle Benue Trough, North Central, Nigeria

    The research of an analysis of aeromagnetic data collected in the middle Benue Trough in north-central Nigeria is presented. A detailed analysis of basement structures is conducted in order to identify regions with high hydrocarbon potential that is different from those discovered by earlier researchers. Aeromagnetic data were filtered by using the Butterworth and Gaussian filters, transformed by engaging the reduction to the equator technique, and subsequently enhanced. To estimate magnetic basement depths at various places throughout the basin, the Euler deconvolution depth weighting approach was used. Eleven (11) sub-basins with depths ranging from –2000 m to –8000 m were also identified by Euler's findings. The sub-basins trend in the NE-SW direction while the average sediment thickness is found to be more than 3 km. The extracted structural features indicate areas like Kadi Blam and Kado areas in the southeastern part and Ogoja and Obudu in the southern part of the study area as regions with high structural densities. These areas coincide with the areas delineated as the sub-basins. The cross-sections generated reveal depressions caused by the action of some tectonic activities in the area. This study identified undulating basement topography believed to be due to tectonic activities as well as five areas that are possible targets for hydrocarbon exploration

    Urban underground public space has a synergistic effect with its surrounding urban aboveground functions or facilities, which reflects the complementarity between underground functions and urban functions. The research analyses the degree of integration through the case study of urban aboveground space and underground space in China. The research method of this paper will give different evaluation criteria to public transport and public space and the influencing factors of space integration. The indicators of public transport include the number of subway lines and underground parking spaces. The evaluation standard of public space is the area of underground space and the number of floors of underground space. The subway entrance and exits are selected as the evaluation index for the aboveground and underground transition space. Through the specific analysis of 7 selected cases, it provides arguments for the research. The average rent in the case is taken as the dependent variable. Through the regression model, the influencing factors of the integration of aboveground and underground space are determined.     Preliminary Insights on Sustainability Reporting Practice in Cambodia

    This paper aims to investigate the development and evolution of sustainability reporting practices in Cambodia and to identify current practices and trends in sustainability reporting in Cambodia, as well as perceptions of sustainability reporting. Interviews and surveys were used to determine respondents’ perceptions of issues related to sustainability reporting. The results from this study found that 74 percent of the respondents are aware of sustainability reporting and its perceived strategic importance to businesses but only 29 percent of the respondent’s companies are reporting on environmental and social impacts of their business operations as indicated in the report. The results reveal that non-financial information disclosure and sustainability reporting practices among companies are at the early stage in Cambodia. The study also reveals that the nondisclosure of environmental and social activities could be due to the lack of disclosure requirements on environmental and social impacts of business operations by national law, the lack of incentives for companies to disclose, and the lack of understanding of the strategic importance of such reporting in generating competitive advantage and achieving sustainable business model. Findings in the study revealed several issues that require further analysis to identify significant factors that would influence environmental and social activities disclosure using a sustainability report

    Agarase Production by Marine Pseudoalteromonas sp. MHS: Optimization, and Purification

    Agar is an essential polysaccharide that has been utilized in numerous fields. Many kinds of literature have been published regarding agarolytic microorganisms’ isolation and agarases biochemical studies. In this search, a local marine agarolytic bacterium associated with marine alga Ulva lactuca surface was isolated and identified as Pseudoalteromonas sp. MHS. The agarase production was parallel to the growth of Pseudoalteromonas sp. MHS as cells displayed a lag phase (2 h), subsequently an exponential growth that prolonged till 10 h where maximum growth (OD550nm = 3.9) was achieved. The enzyme activity increased rapidly as cells increased exponentially where the maximum activity of 0.22 U/mL was achieved after 8h and remained constant till 12 h during the stationary phase of growth. Agarase production was optimized using Plackett-Burman statistical design by measuring enzyme activity as a response and the design was validated using a verification experiment; the activity of the enzyme increased from 0.22 U/mL to 0.29 U/mL. Pseudoalteromonas sp. MHS agarase was partially purified and its molecular weight (MW) was determined by SDSPAGE (15-25 kDa). Agarase showed approximately 94% of its activity at 40 °C. The enzyme stability decreased as the temperature increased; the enzyme could retain about 98, 90, 80, 75, and 60% of its activity at 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 °C, respectively. Biomass of the red alga Pterocladia capillacea proved to be a suitable substrate for agarase production using Pseudoalteromonas sp. MHS; the enzyme activity recorded after 24 h of incubation was 0.35 U/mL compared to 0.29 U/mL from the optimized medium

    Call census, habitat suitability modeling and local communities’ perceptions for the conservation of a globally threatened avian flagship species

    The Western tragopan (Tragopan melanocephalus) is recorded in the IUCN Red List of 2017 as a Vulnerable bird species in Pakistan.  This study was conducted to investigate and resolve the conservation challenges surrounding the species in two major habitat zones - Salkhala Game Reserve and Machiara National Park. The study was arranged in May-June 2020 for the call count census. Local residents’ perceptions and a habitat suitability map were developed for the species using MaxEnt model based on previously recorded occurrence points as well as recorded in the survey. A total of 26 western Tragopans were identified by call count during the sampling period. Results of modeling habitat suitability of the Western tragopan showed that the species suitable habitats are small and patchy in Pakistan. We found that the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) with 40.6 percent contribution was the most important variable in shaping the species distribution. Our model identified some new suitable patches which can be the target of future field monitoring for finding new populations of the species. This study provides valuable information for conservation of Western tragopan a globally threatened avian flagship species in Pakistan

    Comparative Analysis of Three Types of Fishing Gear Marking for Anchored Fish Aggregating Devices in Purse Seine Fishery in Thai Waters

    Anchored fish aggregating devices (AFADs) have been widely used for fishing in Thai waters. However, abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gears (ALDFGs), including lost AFADs, may cause environmental impacts. Fishing gear marking (FGM) is considered as a tool to help identification of ALDFGs. The main objective of this study is to compare the durability represented by the percentage of remaining condition (R-value) of three material types of FGM applied for AFADs, i.e., stainless steel (SS), colored acrylic (CA), and polypropylene (PP). This study was carried out using 50 AFADs deployed in the Gulf of Thailand (GOT) and the Andaman Sea (ANS) between July and October 2020 in cooperation with 10 fishers. The AFADs were deployed in similar habitat (bottom depth and type) between the GOT and the ANS. The three material types of FGM were assumed to be sufficiently durable to last for the lifespan of the AFADs in both the GOT and the ANS (within 2 months and 3.5 months, respectively) though some FGMs in the ANS were detached from cable ties or broken before AFADs were lost. The loss of AFADs and FGMs was mainly caused by adverse weather condition (rough sea). Only data from the ANS was included in comparative analysis due to the insufficient variance data obtained from the GOT. The analysis revealed that SS had the higher durability than CA and PP when the AFADs lasted for less than 3.5 months. As a result of our study, some recommendations were made. For example, the cable ties can be replaced by ropes or threads to improve the installation method. This study serves as a basis to develop FGM and to support responsible fisheries.
