    Evaluation of Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) Landraces for Drought Tolerance Using Morphological and Yield Characters under Rainfed Conditions of Sub Region Hagaz, Eritrea

    Sorghum is an important food crop in Eritrea where it is widely grown in the mid and low lands, of semi-arid regions. Eritrea being the center of origin of sorghum, a large variability exist in its landraces being grown by the farmers since generations. In order to improve the productivity of sorghum under moisture stress conditions, it is imperative to evaluate these landraces for drought tolerant characteristics and their use for further crop improvement programmes. Therefore, a field study was conducted in a randomized complete block design with three replications to estimate the extent of genetic variability of 20 sorghum genotypes for moisture stress tolerance using various morphological, phenological, yield and yield related parameters under rainfed conditions at Hagaz Research Station. Significant difference was observed for almost all the characters in the individual analysis of variance suggesting that these sorghum accessions were highly variable. Accessions EG 537, EG 1257, EG 849, EG 791, EG 783 and EG 813 showed promising results for post flowering drought tolerance, grain yield and stay green traits. Higher PCV and GCV were also obtained in parameters like plant height, leaf area, biomass, peduncle exertion, panicle length, and grain yield and panicle weight. The genotypes also exhibited varying degrees of heritability estimates. Characters such as plant height, panicle length, days to flowering and maturity showed higher heritability. Cluster analysis revealed that sorghum landraces were grouped on the basis of their morphological traits and geographical sites. 77.3% of the total variation of sorghum landraces was contributed by the first four principal components analysis having Eigen value > 1. Overall, the current study confirmed that EG 537, EG 849, EG 1257, EG 791, and EG 813 are drought tolerant sorghum landraces during post flowering stage

    Science Teaching Efficacy Beliefs of Palestinian Elementary Education Students

    To assess elementary education students’ self-efficacy beliefs in science teaching, the Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument developed by Enochs and Riggs was used. The instrument consisted of two scales, Personal Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Scale and the Outcome Expectancy Scale. It was administered to 90 undergraduate university students majoring in elementary education at a large public Palestinian university. Results indicated that students’ self-efficacy beliefs in science teaching were comparable to those reported in the original study by Enochs and Riggs. Overall, the participants presented moderate to high self-efficacy in science teaching

    Construction and Initial Structure of Sexual Dysfunctions Tendencies Measure

    Disclosure of sexual dysfunctions is difficult due to shame and social stigma. The instruments to measure sexual dysfunctions so far were quite backdated and lengthy. Moreover, there was no specific instrument available that could evaluate all the sexual dysfunctions on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders’ criteria in a single scale; separate for men and women. The objective to develop the scale was to provide the non-clinical population with a short and straight-forward measure in English which could help them in deciding about seeking professional help. The constructed scale comprised of 7 items for males and 7 for females and employed 6-points Likert scale for responses. The study involved 79 men and 105 women (N=184; Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin Measure of Sample Adequacy=0.682 for males and 0.618 for females). The inclusion criteria were the practical involvement of the participants in sexual practices and ability to respond to a questionnaire in English. Exploratory Factor Analysis was conducted to measure the reliability and validity of the scale. While employing Principal Component Analysis for extraction and Oblimin with Kaiser Normalization as Rotation, Exploratory Factor Analysis was conducted on 7 items for males and 7 items for females separately. Sampling adequacy was found good and the adequacy of correlations between items and was found highly significant. The Cronbach’s Alpha reliability was satisfactory. 4 factors were extracted for males with 78.65% variance explained. 3 factors were extracted for females with 66.57% variance explained. The communalities for all the 14 items ranged between 0.554 to 0.937. The study established that Sexual Dysfunctions Tendencies Measure is a valid and reliable tool to measure sexual dysfunctions with the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders

    Open Space Implications in Urban Development: Reflections in Recent Urban Planning Practices in Nepal

    Open space has various implications in urban development planning and has been integrated in recent urban planning approaches and practices in Nepal. The open spaces are not only important for (re)shaping the urban form but are also important for enhancing urban social life and disaster risk management, particularly for dense cities. As most of the cities in Nepal have been growing haphazardly, the cities lack sufficient open space. However, the value of open space in dense cities like Kathmandu has been recognized more after the Gorkha Earthquake 2015 as the open spaces were extensively used for risk relief, treatment, recovery, and rehabilitation during and after the earthquake. With this background, this paper presents the major planning initiatives in Nepal and discusses how recent urban plans have provisioned and initiated open spaces development by reviewing concurrent urban planning practices, particularly reviewing Periodic Plans, Integrated Urban Development Plan, Smart City Plan, and Land Development Plan. The development of open areas has not been given much attention in the earlier urban planning practice but recent urban development planning has emphasized with a special focus which is very important for sustainable and safer city development and is expected to address the current bulging urban issues of spatiality and sociability. Therefore, it is very important for integrating open space implications in city planning and such open space should be conceptualized according to the city’s geography, landscape as well as socio-cultural contexts.

    Pollution of Airborne Fungi in Naturally Ventilated Repositories of the Provincial Historical Archive of Santiago de Cuba (Cuba)

    Environmental fungi can damage the documentary heritage conserved in archives and affect the personnel’s health if their concentrations, thermohygrometric parameters and ventilation conditions are not adequate, problems that can be accentuated by Climate Change. The aims of this work were to identify and to characterize the airborne fungal pollution of naturally ventilated repositories in the Provincial Historical Archive of Santiago de Cuba and predict the risk that these fungi pose to the staff’s health. Indoor air of three repositories of this archive and the outdoor air were sampled in an occasion every time in 2015, 2016 and 2017 using a SAS sampler. The obtained fungal concentrations varied from 135.6 CFU/m3 to 421.1 CFU/m3 and the indoor/outdoor ratios fluctuated from 0.7 to 4.2, evidencing a variable environmental quality over time, but in the third sampling the repositories environments showed good quality. Aspergillus and Cladosporium were the predominant genera in these environments. A. flavus was a prevailed species in indoor air, while A. niger and Cl. cladosporioides were the species that showed the greatest similarities with the outdoor air. Coremiella and Talaromyces genera as well as the species Aspergillus uvarum, Alternaria ricini and Cladosporium staurophorum were the first findings for environments of Cuban archives. Xerophilic species (A. flavus, A. niger, A. ochraceus, A. ustus) indicators of moisture problems in the repositories were detected; they are also opportunistic pathogens and toxigenic species but their concentrations were higher than the recommended, demonstrating the potential risk to which the archive personnel is exposed in a circumstantial way

    Influence of Nanoparticle Shapes of Boehmite Alumina on the Thermal Performance of a Straight Microchannel Printed Circuit Heat Exchanger

    The efficiency and irreversibility defined based on the second law ofthermodynamics provide a new path for heat exchangers design and makeperformance analysis more straightforward and elegant. The second lawof thermodynamics is applied in a Straight Microchannel Printed Circuitheat exchanger to determine the thermal performance of different shapes ofBoehmite Alumina compared to Al2O3 aluminum oxide. The various formsof non-spherical Boehmite Alumina are characterized dynamically andthermodynamically through dynamic viscosity and thermal conductivity,using empirical coefficients. The non-spherical shape includes platelet,cylindrical, blades, and bricks forms. Graphical results are presented forthermal efficiency, thermal irreversibility, heat transfer rate, and nanofluidexit temperature. The non-spherical shapes of Boehmite Alumina showdifferent thermal characteristics concerning the spherical shape whenthere are variations in fluid flow rates and the nanoparticles fraction.Furthermore, it was theoretically demonstrated that non-spherical particleshave higher heat transfer rates than spherical particles, emphasizingplatelets and cylindrical shapes for the low volume fraction of nanoparticlesand bricks and blades for high volume fraction

    Determination of Hydrodynamic Parameters of Chitosan Stabilized Bimetallic Nanoparticles

    The hydrodynamic characteristics of bimetallic Ag/Cu and Co/Ag nanoparticles stabilized by chitosan were determined. The polydispersity indexand the diameter of nanoparticles were observed to decrease in contrast tothe original polymer during the creation of chitosan stabilized bimetallicnanoparticles, decreasing from 0.342 to 0.12±0.04 and 2.5 micron to 180nm, respectively. However, the diffusion coefficient of chitosan was increased from 0.2 cm2 /s to 2.71 cm2 /s during the production of stable bimetallic nanoparticles. The lack of absorption bands at 500 nm and 700 nm-900 nm in the UV spectra of the samples suggests that in the presence ofa reducing agent, copper (II) and cobalt (II) ions undergo full reduction.The relationship between the synthesis conditions and the kind of structureof bimetallic nanoparticles “core-shell” has been discovered. Silver atomshave been shown to be both a core and a shell, depending on the synthesisconditions and chemical nature of metal ions

    Knot Types Used by Transformable and Rigid Linear Structural Systems

    A knot is the joining place between two or more constructive elements in a framework or structure. They have a fundamental importance in the structure, according to their design they will be able to give a geometric configuration or another to the system and will also absorb certain forces or others. Depending on the movements they allow to the bars, there are rigid knots, articulated knots and slip knots. In this paper a study of cases about rigid knots or embedments used by structural systems so far will be presented. These types of knots prevent the rotation and movement of the constructive elements used for construction. In this paper also a study of cases about the articulated and slip knots used by transformable structural systems so far will be presented. An articulated knot allows the rotation but not the movement of the elements. A slip knot prevents movement in one of the three axes of the reference system, but not in the others, nor in the rotation between the elements. The research is focused in presenting a summary and comparison of rigid knots, articulated knots and slip knots that have been used in the structural design of some architecture. The union systems research will be crucial in this study. The investigation shows an important state of the art that provides technical solutions to apply on novel architectures based on rigid structural systems and articulated and slip structural systems. The research is useful to produce the current constructive solutions based on these constructive systems

    Total Energy and Electronic States of CdSe Nanoparticles

    The authors fulfilled calculations of the total energy and electronic states of CdnSen nanoparticle:“wurzite”, “sphalerite” and “rock-salt” types of the structure. It was shown that at n ≤ 72 the “rock-salt” type is the most favorable energetically. However the extrapolation of the behavior of the energy per Cd-Se atomic pair shows that for n > 130 (corresponding to a size of about 2 nm), particles with a “wurtzite” structure can be more advantageous. Particles of the “wurtzite” and “rock-salt” types have an electronic structure with an energy gap. For particles with the “wurtzite”structure, the gap width decreases with increasing particle size: from 3.3 eV to 2.2 eV as the particle increases from 0.5 nm to 1.5 nm. For particles of the “rock-salt” type, the gap width grows slightly, remaining about 3 eV.“Sphalerite”-type particles have a metal-like electronic structure
