    Metric-based Few-shot Classification in Remote Sensing Image

    Target recognition based on deep learning relies on a large quantity of samples, but in some specific remote sensing scenes, the samples are very rare. Currently, few-shot learning can obtain high-performance target classification models using only a few samples, but most researches are based on the natural scene. Therefore, this paper proposes a metric-based few-shot classification technology in remote sensing. First, we constructed a dataset (RSD-FSC) for few-shot classification in remote sensing, which contained 21 classes typical target sample slices of remote sensing images. Second, based on metric learning, a k-nearest neighbor classification network is proposed, to find multiple training samples similar to the testing target, and then the similarity between the testing target and multiple similar samples is calculated to classify the testing target. Finally, the 5-way 1-shot, 5-way 5-shot and 5-way 10-shot experiments are conducted to improve the generalization of the model on few-shot classification tasks. The experimental results show that for the newly emerged classes few-shot samples, when the number of training samples is 1, 5 and 10, the average accuracy of target recognition can reach 59.134%, 82.553% and 87.796%, respectively. It demonstrates that our proposed method can resolve fewshot classification in remote sensing image and perform better than other few-shot classification methods

This paper summarizes and elaborates on underwater communication technology, long-distance data transmission technology, multi-submersible robot collaborative operation, and information interaction technology, as well as the development status of key technologies of remote wireless operation platform on water surface.     Environmental Strategies for Sustainable Development: An Analysis of the Drivers of Proactive Environmental Strategies in the Manufacturing Sector

    Stakeholders’ concern towards the ecological damage arising out of emissions from the industrial processes has raised serious issues before the industrial sectors. Environmentalists and researchers are raising these issues in various forums. Few industrial sectors are well informed about environmental protection and act accordingly to address these issues by complying with environmental norms. However, some firms are more ethical in their business and proactively redefine their operations and policies beyond the regulatory requirements. What factors compel these firms to go beyond the extant laws to protect the environment? This study statistically analyses India’s cement sector for the factors that may be the drivers of environmental proactivity. Using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM), eight hypotheses were tested. The study’s findings can be helpful for the policymakers, environmental managers, and industrial sectors to frame policies for environmental protection, which will redound to societal benefit

    Effect of Corporate Governance Compositions on Financial Reporting Timeliness in Nigerian Deposit Money Banks

    This study ascertained the effect of corporate governance compositions on timeliness of financial reporting in deposit money banks in Nigeria. Ex Post Facto research design was employed for this study. Purposive sampling was used to select eight (8) deposit money banks in Nigeria with international authorization. Data were extracted from annual reports and accounts of the sampled banks and analyzed with regression analysis. The results show that board size has a positive and significant effect on financial reporting timeliness deposit money banks in Nigeria, while audit committee independence has a positive but insignificant effect on financial reporting timeliness of deposit money banks in Nigeria. Therefore, on the basis of the findings and conclusions of the study, the study recommends among other things that the number of banks board of directors should play a vital role in how well it can oversee daily operations of the institution and monitor management

    A Strategic Assessment and Evaluation of the Major Determinants of Work-Life Balance for University Student Workers in Lebanon

    This research aims to explore the major determinants of work-life balance (WLB) for university student workers in Lebanon. The proposed relationships consist of causality between each of the variables of working hours, proximity to employment, proximity to university, workload, study leave, leaving early, work from home, study at work, and flexible working hours on one hand, and work-life balance on the other. Employing a deductive approach, this study presents one main research question and quantitatively tests 11 hypotheses using a sample of 300 workers studying in both Lebanese University and Notre Dame University. The findings show that work-life balance significantly varies according to demographic factors. As for variables, the number of courses was found to have a significant negative causal relation with work-life balance, while the ability to obtain a study leave and leaving early have a significant positive causal relation with work-life balance. This research adds quantitative empirical proof that number of courses, study leave, leaving early significantly affect “work-life balance” of today’s private and public university student workers in Lebanon. Therefore, the findings offer a theoretical enrichment to the topic of work-life balance in general, and open way for new research to expand internationally as well as locally

    ATR-FTIR Analysis on Aliphatic Hydrocarbon Bond (C-H) Formation and Carboxyl Content during the Ageing of DC Air Plasma Treated Cotton Cellulose and Its Impact on Hydrophilicity

    The surface of the cotton fabric was modified using a Direct current (DC) air plasma treatment and hence enhances its hydrophilicity. The Box-Behnken approach (design expert software) was used to optimise the input process parameters. The sample prepared under optimized condition is subjected to ATR-FTIR and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) studies in order to determine the changes in hydrogen bond energies (EH), Total Crystallinity Index (TCI), Hydrogen Bond Intensity (HBI), Lateral Order Index (LOI), functionalization, lattice parameters (a, b, c & β), degree of crystallinity (in %) and surface etching. The ageing of this sample has been studied by comparing the values of carboxyl content and AC-C/AC-O-C ratio calculated using data extracted from ATR-FTIR spectra of the sample recorded periodically for one month

    Petrography and Geochemical Studies of Basement Rocks around Zango-Daji and Its Environs, North Central Nigeria

    The geology of the Zango-Daji area was investigated petrographically and geochemically to determine the study area’s rock types and mineralization potential. The study area is underlain by rocks of the basement complex characterized by hilly and undulating rocks, which include granitic gneiss, migmatite gneiss, biotite hornblende granite gneiss, and pegmatites. Observation from the field shows that the study area is dominantly underlain by granitic gneiss. The granitic gneiss is dark grey, medium-coarse-grained, and characterized by weak foliation defined by the alignment of a streak of light and dark-coloured minerals. They are widespread in the area constituting about 70% of rock types found in the study area. The average modal percentage of minerals in the rocks from petrographic studies shows that granitic gneiss had quartz 45%, plagioclase 10%, microcline 20%, hornblende 2%, biotite 10%, muscovite 5%, kyanite 8% and other minerals 5%. Also, the pegmatite of the study area has no evidence of mineralization; it contains minerals like quartz, feldspars (microcline and orthoclase), and micas (mostly muscovite). Geochemical analysis of the granitic gneiss of the study area shows that silica is by far the most abundant with a value of 53.5%, Na2O value of 32.5%, Al2O3, and K2O of 6.1% and 4.0%, respectively. CaO value of 2.630% accounts for plagioclase feldspar in the granitic gneiss. The QAP diagram was used to determine the petrogenesis of the granitic gneiss. The plot shows the parent rock was a monzogranite with a low percentage of plagioclase in a thin section with a high percentage of quartz and alkali feldspar. The pegmatites of the study area are barren, as confirmed by the XRD result

    Use of GIS to Estimate Recharge and Identification of Potential Groundwater Recharge Zones in the Karstic Aquifers, West of Iran

    Estimating and studying groundwater recharge is necessary and important for the management of water resources. The main aim of this work is to estimate the value of the annual recharge in some parts of the Kermanshah and Kurdistan province located in the west of Iran. There are many approaches available for estimation of the recharge, but RS (remote sensing) and GIS (geographic information system) have provided and combined a lot of effective spatial and temporal data of large areas within a short time. For this purpose, nine information layers including the slope, aspect of slope, lithology, lineament density, drainage density, precipitation, vegetation density, soil cover, and karst features were prepared and imported to the ArcMap software. After preparing the information layers, they have to weigh based on their effects on the value of the recharge. In order to be weighted the different parameters, methods of judgment experts, reciprocal influences of parameters, and AHP were used. Using GIS, the results obtained from the final map indicated the average value for the recharge based on the average calculated coefficient of recharge. The annual recharge coefficient in the study area was estimated to be between 30% and 80%

    Promotion Standards and Practices across the Business Cycle: Evidence from Korea

    Korean employers notoriously practice seniority-based personnel management, rather than one prioritizing workers’ skills or performance, and this has changed only slowly amid the evolving business landscape and advancing labor standards. This study contributes to understanding this phenomenon by assessing Korean firms’ promotion criteria and practices over the past decade across distinct phases of industry business cycles, and between the economy’s primary and secondary sectors. Primary-sector firms are shown to be less likely than secondary-sector firms to base their promotion decisions on the analysis of workers’ achievements and colleague ratings, but rather on their performance of core job duties. Primary-sector firms have more advancement steps within their management ranks, and longer wait time until promotion at all ranks. Secondary-sector firms are flatter hierarchically, featuring shorter time to promotion at all ranks and fewer advancement steps, but also a lower fraction of promotions based on special merit. Firms’ promotion practices change over the business cycle. During expansionary years, the hierarchical dispersion of workers within organizations widens, particularly among primary-sector firms, with more workers remaining as regular staff but more managers promoted to senior management. As firms recruit more regular staff, years to promotion to managerial positions, and the count of advancement steps increase. Business expansion induces firms to streamline promotions to management based on colleague ratings subject to lesser review of workers’ own achievements. Over the past decade, promotions by special merit have receded while those by colleague ratings have gone up. Firms are thus apparently not transitioning toward merit- and achievement-based promotions, and continue relying on subjective colleague ratings and job-content analysis in their stagnant hierarchical structures. This has implications for workers and for policymakers tasked with ushering in more inclusive, objective and meritocratic personnel management practices
