Teaching and learning materials utilised in professional development for mentor teachers
Mentoring in pre-service teacher education has gained prominence in Australia in recent times. In the context of pre-service teacher education, mentoring occurs during the pre-service teacher’s professional placement. The professional placement involves a pre-service teacher being placed with a classroom based mentor teacher in order to learn and practice the craft of teaching. The professional placement is reported as the most valuable part of learning to teach by pre-service teachers, however the success of the placement is dependent on the teacher mentor and their ability to mentor the pre-service teacher. This paper investigates the role of professional development in the training of mentor teachers. Specifically, the paper investigates the types of teaching and learning materials used during professional development sessions with mentor teachers and the impact of these materials on the mentoring approach used by the mentor teacher. As such, the research reported on in this paper, focuses on what mentor teachers conveyed as the most effective aspects of the professional development and how different types of learning materials contributed to their learning
Kvik: Interactive exploration of genomic data from the NOWAC postgenome biobank
We have developed Kvik, a system for interactive exploration of genomicdata from the Norwegian Women and Cancer (NOWAC) postgenomebiobank. The goal of the NOWAC study is to understand the dynamicsof carcinogenesis through multi-level functional analyses of transcriptomicsand epigenetics using blood and tissue samples. Kvik provides a tool forexploring gene expression data, incorporating both statistical analysis andinteractive visualizations in a single system. The tool is open-sourced atgithub.com/fjukstad/kvik
Parallell Slump
Inclusive education in environmental studies textbooks for primary education
Here we present the results of a study analysing the contents addressed by the activities included in textbooks for the subject of “environmental studies”. In the interest of delving deeper into methodologies and techniques that an inclusive school can promote, and after an exhaustive national (Spanish) and international bibliographical review, we have found evidence of the importance of cooperative learning among students as a strategy for facilitating the acquisition of inclusive values. Moreover, the subject of environmental studies expressly aims to address the acquisition of knowledge regarding our community's cultural, linguistic and historical values. Our findings question that these aims are actually achieved. In addition, we present a description of the competencies, aims, contents and activities included in several school textbooks
Employment of American and British first language textbooks as a foreign language resource in private schools in South Lebanon
This article presents the findings of research that examined how teachers employed first language textbooks to teach English as a foreign language and to develop the intercultural competences of their students. The research employed semi-structured phenomenological interviews and questionnaires with eight South Lebanese educators. The findings demonstrates how in relation to language learning, the employment of foreign textbooks produces successful results. The research though also details how teachers have to work hard to bridge the cultural gaps between their students and the ‘alien’ cultures detailed in the textbooks. Problematic, it would appear to the development of inter cultural competence is that in South Lebanon some cultures, noticeably that of Judaism, and some topics, such as sexuality, that schools, teachers but moreover parents control how and indeed if, students are inculcated into wider cultures and debates. The conclusion of the research details how in the development of intercultural competence that teachers are the key mediators of students’ responses to cultures and practices other than their own
Nerding for Newbies 2014 A Summer School in Computers & Programming
Recruiting students to informatics can be a challenge, particularly when itcomes to recruiting female students. The Department of Informatics at theUniversity of Bergen has had severe problems with both recruitment andretention of female students. As part of an effort to raise interest in computers and programming ingeneral, and among women in particular, we organised a two-week summerschool where students could learn a range of subject including programming,Linux, electronics, statistics and other basic computer geek skills – in short,Nerding for Newbies. In this paper, we discuss the organisation of the summerschool, our teaching methods and our experiences
The analysis of discursive constructions of national identity in Polish literature textbooks
The aim of my paper is to investigate the process of discursive construction of national identity in Polish literature textbooks. In my research project I have specified the dominating types of identities of Poles and the points of exclusion - the spaces that relate to particular social and cultural groups that are excluded from the discourse of Polishness. this research utilizes critical discourse analysis and deals with particular advantages and limitations of the approach in the context of textbook research
New Iterative Algorithms for Weighted Matching
Matching is an important combinatorial problem with a number ofpractical applications. Even though there exist polynomial time solutionsto most matching problems, there are settings where these are too slow. This has led to the development of several fast approximation algorithmsthat in practice compute matchings very close to the optimal. The current paper introduces a new deterministic approximationalgorithm named G 3 , for weighted matching. The algorithm is based ontwo main ideas, the first is to compute heavy subgraphs of the originalgraph on which we can compute optimal matchings. The second idea isto repeatedly merge these matchings into new matchings of even higherweight than the original ones. Both of these steps are achieved usingdynamic programming in linear or close to linear time.We compare G 3 with the randomized algorithm GPA+ROMA whichis the best known algorithm for this problem. Experiments on alarge collection of graphs show that G 3 is substantially faster thanGPA+ROMA while computing matchings of comparable weight
Edge Pixel Classification Using Automatic Programming
We have considered edge detection as a classification problem, and wehave applied two popular machine learning techniques to the problem andcompared their best results to that of automatic programming. We showthat ADATE, our system for automatic programming, is capable of producingsolutions that are as good as, or better than, the best solutions generated bytwo other machine learning techniques. The results demonstrates the ability of the ADATE system to createpowerful heuristics to solve image analysis problems
‘Safe spaces’ – Electronic media, the internet, and the representation of disability
This paper details the findings from a research into educational ‘safe spaces’. In this research, the electronic media emplaced within four English schools’ intranet sites were examined to evidence the image of disability and impairment constructed in this ‘safe space’. The research, through the employment of proto text analysis, revealed that the image of disability and impairment within schools’ electronic media represented and unbalanced and negative image of disability that was grounded in the ideology of child deficit. Based upon these findings it is argued that ‘safe space’ in relation to these intranet sites was more a metaphor of dominance and power than one located within the principles of equality and social justice. The paper argues that as educators we must move beyond safe spaces as a shallow paradigm of meaning and ask when creating such places - what does space mean, how do the electronic media employed in such spaces create meaning and what might specific safe spaces do
