    EEG Biometrics: On the Use of Occipital Cortex Based Features from Visual Evoked Potentials

    The potential of using Electro-Encephalo-Gram (EEG) data as a biometric identifier is studied. This is the first study that assesses looming stimuli for the creation of biometrically useful Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP), i.e. EEG responses due to visual stimuli. A novel method for the detection of VEP responses with minimal expert interaction is introduced. The EEG data, segmented based on the VEP, are used to create a reliable feature vector. In contrast to previous studies, we provide a publicly available evaluation dataset based on infants which is therefore not biased due to unhealthy individuals. Only data from the occipital cortex are used (i.e. about 3 of the many possible electrode positions in the scalp), making the potential EEG biometric capture devices relatively simpler

    Surveying GeoNames Gazetteer Data for the Nordic Countries

    This paper takes a look at freely available gazetteer data for the Nordic countries. We examine locations in this region to understand their characteristics and the quality of the available data. Several indicators are developed and discussed to estimate the expected data quality. The distribution and coverage of the data is mapped and the accuracy and quality indicators are visualized. The used method focuses on populated places as locations of interest but can be extended to arbitrary types of locations. The results give insights into the distribution of issues based on multiple indicators and give an estimate of per-country data quality

    Quantifying Influence of Strategies and Network Properties in Repairing Simultaneous Failures in Smart Grid

    The behavior of networks under simultaneous failures has beensubject to various studies in the field of network science. However, themeasures used do usually not take into account the peculiarities of thestudied network. In this paper, we introduce a new measure for powergrids based on the balancing of power and on the accumulated cost ofenergy not supplied (CENS) during an outage. With the help of thismeasure we quantify the performance of seven repair strategies. We findthat both the choice of the right strategy and the topology of the powergrid has a major influence on the outage cost and the survivability ofthe power grid. Additionally, we appraise the potential of smart gridservices and conclude that both distributed energy resources (DER) anddemand response (DR) has a large potential to reduce the cost of anoutage

    Predicting Source Code Quality with Static Analysis and Machine Learning

    This paper is investigating if it is possible to predict source code qualitybased on static analysis and machine learning. The proposed approachincludes a plugin in Eclipse, uses a combination of peer review/humanrating, static code analysis, and classification methods. As training data,public data and student hand-ins in programming are used. Based onthis training data, new and uninspected source code can be accuratelyclassified as “well written” or “badly written”. This is a step towardsfeedback in an interactive environment without peer assessment

    ‘I enjoy teaching by writing’: experiences of Kenyan secondary school English textbook authors

    This paper examines secondary school English textbook authors’ experiences in Kenya, where English is an official language and the main language of education. Textbook authorship is presented as a production process. Production, one of five processes within the Circuit of Culture (Gray 2007), helps make meaning of the textbook as a cultural artefact. Through interviews, authors indicated that their textbook authorship experiences had involved them in research and planning, drafting and moderation, team-building efforts, informal trialling and, later, opportunities to write different types of teaching and learning materials. Among the challenges they experienced were bonding, syllabus interpretation, meeting deadlines, matching content to learner level, work-life balance, negotiating royalties, copyright issues and access to/handling of consumer feedback. The author concludes that the national curriculum development body, together with publishers and authors, ought to jointly address these various challenges, and thereby improve the overall process of textbook development

    Knowledge of teaching resources in the training of primary and lower secondary school teachers

    This article builds on a study (Iversen, 2013) about the knowledge of teaching resources in the education of primary and lower secondary school teachers. The data comes from focus group interviews and video observations of students divided into two practice groups in a class of 17. The period of teaching covers two weeks. The students were located in the Resource Centre1 he Resource Centre is a resource centre for teaching resources, play materials, communication material and technological resources for children, young people and adults. The object of the research is to examine how the Resource Centre influences primary and lower secondary school teacher trainees (henceforth called students) in their choice of teaching resources appropriate for pupils in the first to third class in primary school. Other significant factors are the students’ background and experience from primary and lower secondary education, subject teachers, the practice group and the pupils in the school.The analysis of the data can indicate that students who desire the professional development for teachers are bearers of a tradition which leads to the reproduction of a distinct culture of teaching and therefore certain teaching resources. Model teaching seems to have great significance for what the students choose from the teaching resources. The subject teachers at the College and the supervising teachers are important models for the students.This study uses theory inspired by the French sociologist, Pierre Bourdieu. This theory is suited to create distance to the normal weekday I inhabit as a researcher, and which influences the reality of the social practice

    Tools for image annotation Using context-awareness, NFC and image clustering

    Annotation of images is crucial for enabling keyword based imagesearch. However, the enormous amount of available digital photos makesmanual annotation impractical, and requires methods for automaticimage annotation. This paper describes two complementary approachesto automatic annotation of images depicting some public attraction. TheLoTagr system provides annotation information for already captured,geo-positioned images, by selecting nearby, previously tagged imagesfrom a source image collection, and subsequently collect the mostfrequently used tags from these images. The NfcAnnotate systemenables annotation at image capture time, by using NFC (Near FieldCommunication) and NFC information tags provided at the site ofthe attraction. NfcAnnotate enables clustering of topically relatedimages, which makes it possible annotate a set of images in oneannotation operation. In cases when NFC information tags are notavailable, NfcAnnotate image clustering can be combined with LoTagrto conveniently annotate every image in the cluster in a single operation

    This paper describes the requirements engineering process developed forthe EU-funded project Analysis of MassIve DataSTreams (AMIDST). Theprocess adopts a use case based approach to requirements engineering (RE),that is tailored to the specific characteristics of the AMIDST project. Thesecharacteristics include a relatively small group of developers, a pre-definedproject scope, stakeholders from different industries, and the development ofa general software framework that can be instantiated according to the needsof the stakeholders. The resulting methodology is sufficiently general to beof relevance for similar development projects

    KD har i en nylig proposisjon foreslått endringer av klagesensurordningen, hvor det leggesopp til at en modell med blind omsensur, som allerede har vært brukt ved en del læresteder,nå skal gjøres obligatorisk for alle læresteder. I denne artikkelen sammenlignes gammel ogny klagesensurordning med ordningene i en del andre land. Vi diskuterer ulike typersensurfeil (med eksempel fra programmering) og kvalitetskriterier for klagebehandling,hvorpå norske og en generisk utenlandsk ordning sammenlignes etter disse kriteriene.Sammenligningen er ikke empirisk, kun analytisk basert på "sunn fornuft". Den indikerer atden norske ordningen for klagesensur ikke holder mål mot internasjonal "state-of-the-art",og at den er unødvendig kostbar uten at dette gir seg utslag i høyere kvalitet avsensurresultatene eller muligheter for læring eller prosessforbedring

    Evaluating prediction models for electricity consumption

    This paper presents a system for visualizing electricity consumptiondata along with the implementation of a pattern recognition approach for peakprediction. Various classification algorithms and machine learning techniques aretested and discussed; in particular, Support Vector Machine (SVM), GaussianMixture Model (GMM) and hierarchical classifiers. Most notably, the bestalgorithms are able to detect 70% of the peaks occurring within the next 24 hours.Also, various ways of correlating energy consumption are considered in the presentcontext. Finally, a few directions for future work are discussed
