Multi-GPU Rendering with the open Vulkan API

    Get PDF
The Vulkan API provides a low level interface to modern Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). We demonstrate how to use Vulkan to send commands explicitly to separate GPUs for implementing platform,- and vendor independent multi-GPU rendering. We describe how to implement the sort-first and sort-last approaches to perform parallel rendering with Vulkan. We introduce an abstraction library which we have made available, and an application for multi-GPU rendering of meshes. Performance benchmarks have been performed in order to evaluate the implementation. We also show that we can utilize the additional GPU memory from multiple GPUs to render larger data sets than possible with a single GPU

Effect of Data from Neighbouring Regions to Forecast Dengue Incidences in Different Regions of Philippines Using Artificial Neural Networks

Disease outbreaks forecasting is a vital component in public-health resource planning and emergency preparedness. However, the existing procedures have limitations due to the lack of analytical knowledge about spatiotemporal data. In this paper, we investigate how spatiotemporal data can be leveraged to forecast future disease outbreaks, using dengue incidences in the Philippines for demonstration purposes. Our approach is based on identifying highly correlated regions and using inputs from these regions to train and forecast dengue incidences using Artificial Neural Networks. We then removed the spatial aspect, focusing separately on each region to measure the effect of introducing spatial data. In all the experiments, monthly dengue incidences in 2016 were used as the testing data. Our empirical results show that including spatial data reduces the Mean Absolute Error by approx. 54 % compared to only using data from the target region. We conclude that adding data from neighbouring regions for forecasting can enhance the traditional approaches for forecasting dengue outbreaks, and we recommend that a spatio-temporal analysis is introduced as a standard component of disease outbreak forecasting

Studentaktivisering gjennom bruk av hverandrevurdering for førstesemesters studenter i Canvas LMS: en forsøksstudie

    Get PDF

Analysis of Feature-Completeness in Android Cross-Platform Frameworks

In cross-platform mobile development research, we frequently encounter mentions of limitations and constraints potentially imposed by technical tools and development frameworks. This is especially prominent in the context of programmatic device- and platform feature access, including features such as GPS, Internet and device camera access.Although the majority of the literature does not empirically validate these claims, they have reached acceptance in both practitioners' communities and academic research.By downloading a sample of 300,000 Android applications available on the Google Play Store and analysing them, we set forth to find which platform- and device features are the most commonly included in deployed apps.Based on the results, we map the features to their availability in five major cross-platform development frameworks, thus provide an overview of feature completeness and potential shortcomings in these popular frameworks. Our findings indicate that the scrutinised frameworks range from 86.37% to 95.46% feature-completeness and can thus facilitate the development of mobile apps relying on features that are commonly found in our assessed sample of Android apps

Aggregation of probabilisitic logically related judgments

    Get PDF
Information aggregation is at the core of many problems in computer science. Judgement aggregation models multi-agent decision making by aggregating individual opinions from various sources. It does however assume that the sources are certain in their opinions and also subject to the same logical constraints. We relax both of these assumptions and build a more general framework with uncertain information sources that we model in probabilistic logic. We also propose aggregation functions for this new framework

Full Approximation Scheme for Reservoir Simulation

    Get PDF
Simulation of multiphase flow and transport in porous rock formations give rise to large systems of strongly coupled nonlinear equations. Solving these equations is computationally challenging because of orders of magnitude local variations in parameters, mixed hyperbolic-elliptic governing equations, grids with high aspect ratios and strong coupling between local and global flow effects. The state-of-the-art solution approach is to use a Newton-type solver with a algebraic multigrid preconditioner for the elliptic part of a linearized system. Herein, we discuss the use and implementation of a Full Approximation Scheme (FAS) in which algebraic multigrid is applied on a nonlinear level. By use of this method, global and semi-global nonlinearities can be resolved on the appropriate coarse scale. Improved nonlinear convergence is demonstrated on standard benchmark cases from the petroleum literature. The method is implemented in the solver framework of the open-source Matlab Reservoir Simulation Toolbox (MRST).&nbsp

Evaluation of team dynamics in Norwegian projects for IT students

    Get PDF
The need for teaching realistic software development in project courses has increased in a global scale. It has always been challenges in cooperating fast-changing software technologies, development methodologies and teamwork. Moreover, such project courses need to be designed in the connection to existing theoretical courses. We performed a large-scale research on student performance in Software Engineering projects in Norwegian universities. This paper investigates four aspects of team dynamics, which are team reflection, leadership, decision making and task assignment in order to improve student learning. Data was collected from student projects in 4 years at two universities. We found that some leader’s characteristics are perceived differently for female and male leaders, including the perception of leaders as skillful workers or visionaries. Leadership is still a challenging aspect to teach, and assigned leadership is probably not the best way to learn. Students are performing well in task review, however, needs support while performing task assignment. The result also suggests that task management to be done in more fine-grained levels. It is also important to maintain an open and active discussion to facilitate effective group decision making

Homework-based learning resources: two distinct approaches to design and development

Homework can be described as an enculturated expectation of our schooling discourse both nationally and internationally (Horsley & Walker, 2013). There are universal understandings about homework. From country to country, classroom teachers respond to government homework policy to set homework for theirstudents, mostly using textbooks as the source of homework activity. However, in Australian primary school classrooms, the provision of homework tasks is not generally supported by the use of textbooks or by textbook activities. Rather, the classroom teacher is responsible for the design and the development of homeworkbased learning resources. This paper presents qualitative research that examined the ways in which, and the influences on, the processes used by primary classroom teachers in Queensland (Australia), to design and develop homework tasks. This paper foregrounds two distinct approaches to homework design and development that emerged through the findings; an early years’ teacher orientation and a middle years’ teacher orientation. These findings are significant because teacher homework practices have not been examined in this way before. The objective of this paper is to identify, according to the opinion of Brazilian high school students, the most and least important features of Physics textbooks and their preferred topics and foci. For this purpose, a cross-sectional survey was conducted, with questions based on previous qualitative studies. The data was collected through questionnaires answered by 374 students from five regions in Brazil, between 2012 and 2014. With this data, it was possible to show that the most important feature is a textbook without conceptual errors and the least important one is its weight. Among the themes and foci, the most important is the exercises for the university admission test and the least important one is the biographies. However, there are many differences in responses among sample subsets, such as age, type of school and, especially, gender. Boys are more interested in a mathematical approach and technology, among others, and girls are more interested in digital multimedia content and artistic works.
