Robert Harris interview (January 15, 2013)
As a Korean war veteran and boxing champion, Robert Harris Jr., has accomplished much in his life. Harris' years of service as a teacher and coach within the Milwaukee Public School System resonate the most with him and to those he has reached. In spite of the difficulty for an African American student to acquire a college degree in the 1950s, Harris was determined to follow his dream to teach and coach high school students. With great perseverance and determination, he obtained his goal, majoring in secondary education. His years of teaching at Fifth Street Elementary and North Division High School also made him a trailblazing teacher; and he was recognized as a pioneer by the Historic African American teachers of the Milwaukee Public School System. Even though he is retired, Harris continues to volunteer and serve on boards and committees to reach out to the local community he loves and knows so well
