Freezing Levels and Atmospheric Rivers over the California Feather River Watershed
An atmospheric river (AR) is a long, narrow, and transient corridor of horizontal water vapor flux that primarily affects the west coasts of continents. The freezing level during an AR event can affect its impacts; a low (high) freezing level (Z0°C) will cause snow (rain). The Feather River Watershed (FRW) in northern California was examined to learn more about ARs, freezing levels, and related impacts near Lake Oroville, California’s second largest reservoir. The Rutz et al. (2014) AR catalog and NASA MERRA-2 reanalysis were used to analyze AR and freezing level characteristics, as well as precipitation and inflow data from the California Department of Water Resources. In the FRW’s cold season, 40% of the inflow at ORO is caused by the top 10% of periods with AR conditions, and 28% of the inflow is caused by the top 5% of periods. This demonstrates the need for accurate AR and freezing level forecasts to better prepare for reservoir levels and potential flooding hazards downstream. Top 10 Warm and Cold events from WY1981-2017 were identified by average freezing level per event and by precipitation greater than 1 inch in order to focus on extreme high and low events and their impacts
Effect of Caffeine on Vertical jump, the Wingate Test and VO2max Test
INTRODUCTION: Caffeine (CAF) is a central nervous stimulant and is one of the most popular ergogenic aids due to its positive effect on exercise. PURPOSE: The purpose of the current study was to determine the effects of CAF on the various energy systems in the body, including the ATP-PCr, anaerobic glycolysis, and aerobic systems. METHODS: 10 physically active subjects participated in the study (Age: 21 ± 2 year, Height: 172.2 ± 11.7 cm, Weight: 75.7 ± 20 kg, Body Fat % 21.2 ± 7.7%). Subjects completed the vertical jump (VJ), Wingate anaerobic test (WAnT) and VO2max test, after consuming 100 mg of a CAF gel and a placebo (PLA). The CAF or PLA was consumed 1 hr prior to the exercise testing session. RESULTS: There was a significant difference between the fatigue index (FI) during the WAnT (p \u3c 0.05, CAF: 57.9 ± 17.9%, PLA: 71.3 ± 10.5%). There were no significant differences between CAF and PLA supplements for anaerobic or aerobic variables (p \u3e 0.05). CONCLUSION: The current research showed CAF had little impact on performance. However, there was a significant difference in FI, suggesting CAF allowed the subjects to hold a higher maximum wattage for a longer period
Leveraging Plymouth State\u27s Alumni Network for Students\u27 Career Preparedness
Career Development and Alumni Relations are creating opportunities for directly engaging Plymouth State alumni in students success. Hundreds of alumni are volunteering thousands of hours annually in service to the University and our student body. The shared experience of attending Plymouth State, along with knowledge that spans many professions and industries makes our alumni uniquely qualified to volunteer in this way. Plymouth State\u27s 37,000 alumni represent a remarkable resource for preparing students to successfully pursue their aspirations while in school and after graduation. Discover how Career Development and Alumni Relations are partnering with faculty and staff to leverage these relationships to make real impacts on the education and growth of students. Presenters will outline current opportunities and programming, faculty and staff will share their experiences of connecting alumni and students, and attendees are invited to share ideas for meeting their goals, while seamlessly fitting into schedules and curricula
Advice for Advisors
Though our office is named the Office of Student Success, we do not by any means own that outcome. We would like to host a discussion on how Advising impacts Student Success. We will let you know about some initiatives our office will be rolling out including a site that is a one-stop-shop resource for all advisors on campus, Academic Success Sessions, and a monthly advisor newsletter, but the main goal of this session is to gain more information about what advising looks like in your office. What practices do you use? What would make your advising role easier? What are the common themes you hear from your students? In addition to academic progression, advisors must also focus on the emotional, social and mental well-being of our students. Let\u27s have a conversation where we can share some best practices and collaborate on the best way for all advisors on campus to work together towards student success
Tackling Wicked Problems in the Workspace
Would you like to try project-based learning? Apply the four habits of mind? Use open educational resources? Build your own staff development project? A new campus group is working on a staff development model that empowers members to investigate problems affecting their work life. This model will allow PSU staff to experience and understand the new way of learning that students are experiencing in their clusters and address issues that are relevant to staff. Following this fun and interactive session, a Staff Learning Community supported by the Open CoLab will build on what we learn and pilot a new addition to staff development opportunities at PSU
Climb Above Addiction Image 010
The Climb Above Addiction cluster project addresses the need for awareness, support, and education for those affected by addiction. The event component of the project, similar to the Relay for Life but with climbing rather than walking a track, raised money to support a scholarship for the Plymouth House recovery program. This photo was taken at the event.https://digitalcommons.plymouth.edu/climbabove/1009/thumbnail.jp
