    New Hampshire Foreign Direct Investment Report: Presence and Contributions to State and County Economies

    According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, “the United States remains an attractive foreign direct investment (FDI) destination”. Our report examines foreign direct investment in New Hampshire from the perspective of presence of foreign subsidiaries. The distributions of foreign subsidiaries are analyzed across counties and industries in New Hampshire, with accompanying inferences on contributions that foreign firms make to the state. The analysis is based on a sample of 447 subsidiaries of foreign firms. The study is unique in its analysis of the distributions of foreign subsidiaries at the level of counties, sectors and industries, in addition to the explorations into firm size and presence in manufacturing and high-tech industries. It is also nuanced in terms of mapping the countries of origin for FDI in various aspects of New Hampshire economy. The results are meaningful for understanding the kinds of foreign firms that operate in New Hampshire, where such firms are located, where the investments come from, and what types of contributions they make to growth and development. The information included in the report holds value for identifying the sources and geography of foreign presence in the New Hampshire business setting, the scale and main value chain activities of foreign firms, the sectors and industries where foreign firms add jobs and the extent to which foreign firms drive innovation.     Quantifying Carries When Adding Zeckendorf Representations of Natural Numbers

    From a combinatorial perspective, we can count the number of carries that are needed to perform any arithmetic computation in base-b, where b is any natural number, because the number of carries is independent of the algorithm used to perform the arithmetic. The Zeckendorf representation of the natural numbers is a representation that utilizes the Fibonacci sequence as its base. It has been discovered that we can use a similar approach to count arithmetic carries in the Zeckendorf base, but there are multiple types of carries in this base, and this approach only detects one of the two. We propose a method using techniques from linear algebra for counting carries that is able to detect both types of carries in Zeckendorf arithmetic. Further, we are able to count the minimal number of carries need to perform arithmetic computations in this base

    The Effects of Sambucus nigra Extract on Paralysis Rate of Caenorhabditis elegans

    A growing body of evidence suggests that maintenance of proteostasis is necessary to health. Failure to maintain protein quality results in aggregation of toxic oligomers leading to progressive degeneration. CL4176 is a strain of C. elegans genetically engineered to overexpress amyloid beta (Aβ) protein, resulting in accumulation of the Aβ-oligomer and leading to paralysis. Subjecting C. elegans to treatments that mitigate the accumulation of Aβ-oligomer may promote prolongevity of the worms by aiding in the maintenance of the proteome. The plant Sambucus nigra has high concentrations of anthocyanin, a bioactive compound that may promote the maintenance of proteostasis. Four different populations of CL4176 will be exposed to varying concentrations of Sambucus nigra extract. One population will be exposed to a control containing no active compound, and another will be exposed to a positive control of caffeine. The worms will be scored according to standard lifetime assay procedure. Prolonged lifespan of the worms may suggest protective strategies of the extract to slow proteostasis decline during nematode aging
