    Textual Analysis of Black Mirror

    The following report is a textual analysis of the Netflix anthology series Black Mirror. The research team has pulled sample texts from the third season of Black Mirror. The purpose of this research study is to identify and analyze the thematic cultural messages related to social and digital media embedded in the content. To insure maximum validity of the study, the research team has employed various legitimacy tests, such as investigator triangulation, to guarantee the strength of the results. This report connects Black Mirrors cultural subtext to articles from previous research on America’s current relationship with digital technology, as well as to numerous studies related to human interaction with social networking sites. Upon a close reading and thorough research, the research team determined the presence of three main cultural messages in the six episode season: Always On (Boyd 2012), Disembodied Identity & Self-Presentation (Baym 2015), and Privacy as a Luxury (Papacharissi 2010). *This research report contains spoilers.     Lineage Diversification of Cypripedium acaule (Orchidaceae) Across New England

    Cypripedium acaule, also known as the pink lady’s slipper, is an iconic species of eastern North American forests. This species typically comes in at least two forms across its geographic range. Pink and white flowered forms of C. acaule stand out in New England, but little is known about genetic variation within the species. While most pollination studies on this species revolve around fruit set, how color differences might influence pollinator choices and reproductive success is unknown (to the best of our knowledge). Our study looks at whether or not there is evidence of lineage diversification or speciation in New England C. acaule. To do this, we analyzed genetic polymorphisms for samples collected across New England, using both fresh and herbarium specimens. We expected to see C. acaule split by either geographic structure (allopatric speciation) or color (sympatric speciation). If new taxa are discovered, it could shed new light on the reproductive biology and evolution of these plants, thus shifting conservation priorities to account for this diversity

    Condensation Snow Melt

    Ice jam floods that occur along the Pemigewasett River in New Hampshire are often a result of rapid snow melt during rain on snow events. Before any snow melt can occur, the snowpack must first become isothermal (0°C). Snow melt is influenced by several different factors which include solar radiation, air temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, and wind speed. It has been observed that snow melts more rapidly during rain on snow events. Rain melts the snow by entering the snowpack and there is an exchange in heat between the warm rain and isothermal snow. While the rain itself plays a part in melting the snow, the high humidity has more of an effect. The warm, moist air that is present during rain on snow event, condenses on top of cold snow pack. Through condensation, heat is released into the snowpack, which contributes to most of the snowmelt during rain on snow events. I analyzed snowpack data at Hubbard Brook during rain on snow events to test whether the condensation melting is apparent during the past decade. The data are consistent with condensation melting causing the largest winter floods that could lead to ice jam floods further downstream

    Social Dimension of Tick-borne Diseases: Grafton County Residents

    Summary: This study aims to gather the knowledge of Plymouth, New Hampshire residents in regards to ticks, preventative methods of bites, and tick borne diseases more specifically Lyme disease. As the Blacklegged tick is the primary vector for the transmission Lyme disease. There are no known studies conducted in New Hampshire based on the sociological view this study will provide invaluable information that will help provide agencies and awareness groups can use in order to allocate resources. Methods: Researches are going to interview people using interview protocols that contains about 10 questions. We are going to use a convenient sampling strategy in the downtown of Plymouth. By doing this, researches can find out what the general knowledge about ticks are for the population in the Plymouth area. Results: Researchers hypothesize that people within the area may not know much information about the prevalence of ticks and the risks of tick borne illnesses. Although the scenery and plethora of outdoor activities within the area prompts locals to constantly be at risk with ticks, we think that people still lack the general knowledge they need to protect themselves from these eight legged vectors

    Large-scale Regime Transitions and Atmospheric River Landfalls across Western North America

    Recent studies suggest a potential relationship between flow patterns described by the Pacific North American (PNA) teleconnection pattern and landfalling atmospheric rivers (ARs) over western North America. This relationship illustrates an on average positive to negative trend in the PNA in the days leading up to and after a landfalling AR along the California coastline. The goal of this study is to extend prior research by specifically investigating large-scale regime transitions over the Northeast Pacific as described by transitions in the PNA and their relation to AR landfall events. Regime transitions are defined as a change of at least one standard deviation in the PNA index value in seven days. The methodology cross-references archived daily PNA values with NCEP–NCAR Reanalysis-derived sub-daily IVT magnitudes and AR landfalls for locations along the western North American coast between Alaska and the California Baja from 1950 to 2015. Analysis of a time-lagged composite time series of all transitioning PNA events for a +0.5 to -0.5 (-0.5 to +0.5) transition illustrates a statistically significant increased (decreased) likelihood of landfalling ARs at the British Columbia coast between Day –4 and Day –0 and a statistically significant decreased (increased) likelihood from Day +5 to Day +10

    Treatment of Newborn Narcotic Withdrawal

    This project explores the alternate treatments to increase the outcomes of newborns experiencing neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). The project reviews five published articles on the treatment of NAS. A common treatment of NAS is the administration of morphine to help the newborn manage the withdrawal. The literature review was intended to find if a non-pharmalogical treatment could offer better outcomes for the newborn. The findings found that the lasting effects of being exposed to opioids or methadone in utero is unknown due to small sample sizes and environmental factors. The research was unable to identify the lasting effects of using morphine and other drugs to treat NAS. In conclusion, research found that the modified approach referred to “Eat, Sleep, Console,” had incredible outcomes when used to treat newborns with NAS. Eat, Sleep, Console is a method of treatment that focuses on treating the newborn like a newborn. Feed them when they are hungry, cuddle them so they can sleep, and console them when they cry. It also focuses on treating the parents as parents and reducing the stigma of them being an addict to encourage them to still be a parent
