Treatment of Dementia Related Behavioral Issues
No full textAs a senior nursing student, I have found that an important topic in the healthcare field is how to manage dementia related behavioral issues. The different treatment options for dementia related behavioral issues will be explored, including the use of psychotropic medications and behavioral therapies. The effectiveness and safety of these treatments will be analyzed. Through literature review, it was found that medication is the easiest and therefore the most common method of treatment for clients suffering with dementia related behavioral issues. However, these medications can potentially have dangerous adverse effects, which can be especially harmful to elderly clients. The Food and Drug Administration has released statements about minimizing the use of psychotropic medications by older adults due to their adverse effects. However, psychotropic medications are still commonly prescribed for these clients. The reason for their continued use will be explored, along with simple environmental and behavioral changes that can be done to better support these individuals. In the geriatric population, cases of dementia are on the rise making this a pressing topic. More research needs to be done to evaluate the different treatments and therapies offered to promote a better quality of life for these clients
The Effects of Parental Education on Decision Making Regarding Neonate Male Circumcision
No full textIn 2012, The American Academy of Pediatrics amended their circumcision policy statement to include that the current health benefits are not great enough for circumcision to be a routine procedure in all male neonates. They also state that prior to the procedure, the provider must provide parents with unbiased information. The parents are then left to make the decision based entirely on religious, ethical, cultural and aesthetic preferences with little regard to medical indications. A review of the literature reveals that providers of different specialties possess a different knowledge base regarding the risks and benefits of circumcision, therefore parents are receiving varying information dependent on their providers specialty. The literature also assesses the effect of various educational materials on the parent’s decision to circumcise their male neonate. The current literature suggests a need for further evaluation of other learning materials and methods and their effects on parental decisions regarding neonatal circumcision. A need for standardized education for the providers is needed for unbiased, un-varied information to be provided to parent
Daf-2 Gene Silencing and the Response of C. elegans to Oxidative Stress
No full textCaenorhabditis elegans and other nematodes are ectothermic organisms that primarily rely on the environment for temperature regulation. The daf-2 gene has many different functions in C. elegans, including stress resistance to high temperature, oxidative stress, and the capability of entering the developmentally arrested larval state. The daf-2 gene as also been found to regulate longevity in C. elegans. The daf-2 gene is orthologous to IGF1-R in humans, which has been found to be greatly overexpressed in cancerous tissue. PCR was conducted to isolate the daf-2 gene, and the amplicon was inserted into the RNAi feeding vector, which was used to transform E. coli intro a feeding strand for the C. elegans. A juglone sensitivity assay will be conducted on the organisms in order to determine the effects of oxidative stress on daf-2 knockout worms. We predict that the mutant worms will have a shorter lifespan and higher mortality rates compared to the wild type organisms
The Effect of Noise Distractions on Creativity
Get PDFThe current experiment seeks to further our understanding of how external stimuli influences creativity. Twenty participants were asked to create a list of unique alternative uses for a 4’ by 3’ steel trash can and any potential problems corresponding with each use within a 6 minute period. Randomly, 10 of those participants were exposed to an unpredictable audible stressor in the form of a ringtone. To measure creativity, we looked at the number of listed unique uses and potential problems corresponding with each use that participants came up with and also evaluated their creativity with the Creative Behavior Inventory. We predict that participants exposed to an audible stressor would be less creative than those not exposed to audible stressors. Preliminary results will be presented
