    On-Campus Local Foods Market

    No full text
Food insecurity, which is the state of not having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable and nutritious food, is a pressing issue across colleges in the United States. Its important to develop initiatives on-campus in efforts to reduce the impacts of food insecurity on students. One way to do this is by diversifying available food systems to include those that are agriculturally efficient. Additionally, farmers markets give students the opportunity to develop life-long behaviors of supporting the community, healthy eating, and sustainable practices. For this project, we plan to implement four pop-up farmers markets on the Plymouth State University campus starting on 4/13/19 and the consecutive weeks after. We used community-based social marketing methods to select behaviors, identify barriers and benefits, develop strategies, pilot the program, and to implement and evaluate. Our research has shown that students at PSU would be interested in the creation of a farmers market on-campus. This project, in collaboration with Local Foods Plymouth, emphasizes the importance of healthy and sustainable food systems

Native American Culture Incorporation in Rehabilitation Programs For Individuals Recovering from Alcoholism and Substance Abuse

    No full text
Throughout American history, Native American people have been abused and mistreated by other cultures. As a result, many native people today face issues of substance abuse and alcoholism but the revitalization of their traditional practices and beliefs on certain reservations is thought to have helped these rehabilitating individuals recover and live healthier lifestyles. Scholars have studied the differences in treatment for federal based rehabilitation centers and native run ones on numerous reservations. Through interviews of natives in these areas, I will study the effectiveness of traditional practices on their lives and if it makes a substantial difference compared to communities that do not incorporate them. Reviewing existing research of these native communities and their practices will allow for me to further examine their lifestyle approaches for rehabilitating individuals and success rates of recovery. This research will have a qualitative approach that will require me to examine individuals and engage with them while gaining further knowledge of their traditional practices and how they are affecting recovering addicts

Extraction and Purification of Myoglobin From Bovine Muscle Cells

    No full text
Myoglobin is an essential protein found in muscle cells that has a high affinity for oxygen. When the cells lack oxygen due to harsh conditions, such as anaerobic exercise, myoglobin releases it\u27s bound oxygen to the muscle cells. Myoglobin is a well researched protein that can be found in high abundance within muscle cells. In this experiment, myoglobin will be extracted and purified from bovine muscle cells. Once purified, the myoglobin protein will be analyzed through liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to determine the amount of protein found within the bovine cells. This experiment will solidify techniques common in protein extraction and purification, as well as expand on protein analysis techniques

The Convergence Club: An Explanation of Media Convergence Through Fan Films

    No full text
The purpose of this video is to demonstrate and explain the effects of media convergence. It was filmed for an assignment in our Communication and Media Studies course last fall. The task was to create a “fan film” of some sort that highlighted key aspects of media convergence (the merging of media technologies) and attach it to a video essay that further elaborated on which concepts were shown in the video and why. Our group decided to film a trailer for an imaginary sequel to “The Breakfast Club,” in which we depict an “updated” version of the classic story and characters designed to fit in with the modern era (e.g. the characters communicate on smartphones, certain character archetypes revolve around digital-age concepts, etc.). In the following video essay, each of the group members cite various scholarly sources (many of which come from Henry Jenkins) that help define media convergence, the different forms it can come in, its implications for society, and the types of media convergence shown in the opening fan film. In addition, we decided to present the fan film as if it were a YouTube advertisement overlaid onto the “real” video, that being our video essay. Available at https://youtu.be/7e_7_QHvaW

    Bring Communities Together Through Agriculture

    No full text
The research poster I will be submitting was an assigned poster project for my Environmental Planning class with professor Steven Whitman. I enjoyed this project and decided to take a deeper look into the social, economic and environmental impacts of sustainable agriculture. How it can create partnerships, stimulate local economies and benefit our natural environment by promoting sustainable practices. This could be though community gardens, farmers markets and green infrastructure. A lack of localized community involvement can impact a community\u27s sense of place and overall well being. Through this poster, I hope to make an example of how traditional commercial agriculture is unsustainable and will not support are ever-growing population. When we look to the future for innovative ways to produce food we ask, where will it come from? Do we know where the source of our food is coming from now? I aim to open people\u27s prospective into smart consumerism and conscience community effort. How small actions can lead to big impacts, not only on ourselves but our communities as a whole. Through environmental planning agricultural can be set in motion with sustainable practices in mind and transform communities

The Peace Wall Phase II organized a “Find Your Own Peace” Workshop and collaborated with PSU Model UN on April 13-14, combining its workshop with the Eleventh Annual Plymouth Model UN High School Conference. Students created two peace tiles, one to leave at Plymouth State, and one to take to their schools and communities to start their own peace wall project.https://digitalcommons.plymouth.edu/peacewall/1048/thumbnail.jp

    Climb Above Addiction Image 004

The Climb Above Addiction cluster project addresses the need for awareness, support, and education for those affected by addiction. The event component of the project, similar to the Relay for Life but with climbing rather than walking a track, raised money to support a scholarship for the Plymouth House recovery program. This photo was taken at the event.https://digitalcommons.plymouth.edu/climbabove/1003/thumbnail.jp
