    Climatic Niche Variation in Pink and White Lady Slippers (Cypripedium acaule Aiton)

    Cypripedium acaule flowers abundantly in the northeast yet there is still little known about genetic and morphological diversity of this orchid. The white-flowered form, C. acaule forma albiflorum, is currently treated as an allelic variant of the pink lady’s slipper, C. acaule forma acaule. We are interested in whether the white form represents a genetically diverging lineage, becoming reproductively isolated from the pink form. We hypothesized that pink- and white-flowered lady slippers have overlapping geographic ranges, but inhabit different climatic niches. Using occurrence data from iNaturalist (n=3,368) we generated species distribution models for each color form of C. acaule and quantified differences between these models. We found that most white-flowered plants occur in the northern part of the range of C. acaule and that the two forms differ somewhat with respect to climate preference. This model will benefit our larger study to quantify both (a) genetic variation and (b) flower color polymorphism across the range of C. acaule sensu lato. Studies of the genetic and ecological basis of color variation will better our understanding of speciation processes at a much larger scale

    Analysis of Water Vapor Transport and Precipitation Over the Russian River and Santa Ana River Watersheds in California.

    California water resources are heavily dependent on the precipitation associated with atmospheric rivers (ARs). This study is a 20-yr cool season (October–March) climatology that examines the vertical distribution of (IVT) in ARs over the Russian River (RRW) and Santa Ana River Watersheds (SARW). Cool-season precipitation data from PRISM is averaged over the RRW and SARW for the 20-year period 1999–2019. IVT magnitude and direction are calculated using water vapor flux and wind data from NASA MERRA in 50-hPa layers at 38°N 123.125°W for the RRW and 33°N 117.125°W for the SARW. AR events with IVT magnitudes greater than 250 kg m-1s-1(IVT250 events) in the RRW generate up to ~70% of total annual precipitation and generate up to ~60% of total annual precipitation in the SARW. The vertical structure of IVT250 events is analyzed to investigate the distribution of water vapor flux in the lower troposphere (1000-700 hPa), the upper troposphere (700-300-hPa), the direction of IVT relative to terrain, and precipitation totals. IVT concentrated in the 1000-700-hPa layer, and southwesterly ARs explains 73% of the variance of precipitation totals in the RRW and 48% of the variance in the SARW

    Body of Knowledge: How Learning with and through the Body, Mind, and Spirit Impacts a Somatic Coach in Training and Practice

    This dissertation was a qualitative, bounded case study of how graduates of the Strozzi Institute’s somatic coaching training program perceive their education. The study included an exploratory survey and in-depth interviews. A literature review of embodied learning, adult and transformative learning theories, spirituality in whole person learning theory, and embodied consciousness provided the theoretical framework. Spradley’s semantic relations model was utilized to analyze the data. The researcher drew from the philosophies of Merleau-Ponty and Husserl to make meaning of the results through a theoretical lens of embodied consciousness. Five key findings were derived from the research: 1) All of the participants indicated experiencing a full integration of the education they expected to obtain based on the objectives of the somatic coaching training program at the Strozzi Institute; 2) all of the participants believe that achieving mastery in the art of somatic coaching requires copious practice in developing an embodied presence; 3) all of the participants consider the Strozzi Institute’s somatic coaching training program highly influential to their sense of personal spirituality; 4) all of the participants cite embodied learning, the cornerstone of the Strozzi Institute’s somatic coaching training program curriculum, as an effective technique in facilitating and supporting lasting transformation; 5) only those participants (15 out of 18) who revealed having contemplated consciousness draw a connection between their experience with embodied learning and their understanding of embodied consciousness. To summarize, the researcher found that embodied learning may support lasting transformation. All of the participants interviewed believe that embodied learning 1) stays with them more readily than cognitive learning, 2) is effective in helping individuals to transcend conditioned tendencies in order to bring about the conditions they desire, and 3) facilitates a deeper understanding of Self as well as a connection to others and the greater environment. Ultimately, embodied learning leads to somatic awareness, which supports somatic opening and the development of practices that bring about lasting transformation. The researcher suggests further investigation is necessary to understand the impact of embodied learning on adult learning curricula that foster the attainment of personal goals and the expansion of human potential

    Buzz-Pollination Across New England Habitats

    Buzz pollination is a syndrome which relies on specialized floral morphology and pollinator foraging behavior. This syndrome has evolved independently across lineages and allows plants to conserve pollen so there is enough for successful reproduction. Buzz pollination is associated with poricidal anthers and bumblebees. In order to collect pollen, bees grasp the anthers and vibrate their indirect flight muscles, which creates an audible \u27buzz\u27. The objective of this study is to determine the distribution of buzz pollinated species and evaluate anther morphology and buzz characteristics. We sampled 100 sites from May-September 2019 across New England. Flowers were collected in 95% ethanol and visitation was recorded using an audio recorder. Anther length, width, and pore area were measured and audio recordings were analyzed. Field observations and herbarium occurrences were analyzed using ecological niche modeling in R. Anther measurements were displayed on a 3D floral morphospace and multidimensional scaling analysis was used to infer relationships among habitats, anther dimensions, and \u27buzz\u27 characteristics from the recordings. Results of this study will inform evolutionary trajectories associated with specialized plant-pollinator symbiosis and conservation ecology
