The Age of HATOYAMA Haruko and Kaoru : Focusing on their Home Economics in Modern Japan

    Get PDF
This paper attempts to clarify the works and life of HATOYAMA Haruko(1863-1938) and her daughter-in-law, Kaoru(1888-1982). They had been the president and chief director of Kyoritsu Women’s Educational Institution. Haruko was mother of Hatoyama Ichiro(1883-1959), who became the Prime Minister in 1954. Haruko was one of the pioneers of home economics, which rose in the Meiji period, and tried to bring up students at Kyoritsu to be “good wives and wise mothers”. Kaoru helped Ichiro’s political activities in spite of his adversity and illness. Haruko and Kaoru published together the Home Economics (Kasei) in 1917, which became one of the best sellers in modern Japan. Haruko wrote 10 chapters on the marrige and family life, and Kaoru wrote 6 chapters on household economy. It was remarkable that Haruko spared 2 chapters for husbands though they rarely read this sort of book then. Haruko warned husbands to keep their chastity and inducted wives into the way to overcome their worry and sorrow caused by misconduct of their husbands. Acutually, her bitter experience influenced this book. Therefore, Kasei became one of the women’s favorite books. Women in modern Japan shared similar problems.departmental bulletin pape

The United States and the Conflict in Laos : A Prelude to the “Vietnam War”

    Get PDF
This paper is the final part of the author’s study on U.S. involvement in Laos from the end of World War II through the middle of the 1960s. It reviews U.S. policy toward Laos during this period and examines the numerous setbacks and failures that the U.S. had experienced in executing its policy in Laos. U.S. policy toward Laos was characterized by the following features: overemphasis on internal security with abundant military assistance to Laos, lop-sided reliance on the Lao military in influencing the conflict with the communist and neutralist forces and, subsequently, disregard for the democratic process in Laos. The U.S. freely intervened in the internal affairs of Laos, and supported military coups against the civilian government and the rightist military faction in the Laotian civil war. However, the U.S. never succeeded in maintaining the anti-communist conservative government it favored in Laos. The U.S. experienced its successive failures in Laos before its military involvement in Vietnam bogged down in the late 1960s and the early 1970s. The U.S. withdrew its military personnel from Laos when an international agreement on the “neutralization” of Laos was achieved in Geneva in 1962. However, the U.S. began its air war against the communist Pathet Lao force and the Ho Chi Minh Trail within Laos in the middle of 1964 before it started its extensive bombing campaign in Vietnam in 1965. The U.S. involvement in Laos followed the path of an “intervention, failure and withdrawal” pattern, which was to be repeated tragically in Vietnam. The U.S. involvement in Laos could be regarded as a prelude to its involvement in Vietnam.departmental bulletin pape

Methods: Participants included four mothers and three fathers who were raising infants. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to identify the need for prenatal and postnatal supports. The content was categorized by similarity and commonality. Results: Mothers’ needs were classified into seven categories, including “professional involvement in providing knowledge, skills and coping with anxiety” and “adjustment of one’s physical, psychological, and social aspects”. Fathers’ needs were classified into four categories, including “support to imagine the fetus and the life after birth”, “professional involvement to promote understanding and empathy for mothers” and “opportunity to obtain timely knowledge and skills directly linked to infant’s daily care”. Discussion: It was suggested that the involvement of supplementing the support to promote the role acquisition of fathers in the early postpartum period, the psychosocial support to fathers through mothers, and the support to promote the empathy of fathers were effective in the community.departmental bulletin pape
