Early Life of Zeng Guofan : 1811 – 1852
Get PDFThis paper reports the early life of Zeng Guofan, best known for his role in suppressing the Taiping Rebellion. Zeng Guofan was born in a rural part of Hunan Province, a rather backward region at the time, and he was the first jinshi in his family. He was at first a Neo-Confucianist but went on to follow the Tongcheng School, which emphasized the elegant prose of the Tang and Song dynasties. Zeng Guofan worked hard to cultivate virtue, and he devoted himself to providing an education for his younger brothers. The comfortable life that he enjoyed at Hanlin Academy and in the Household Department of the Imperial Heir allowed him to pursue his studies and to make many good friends. His closest friends, who were from the same region or passed the examinations at the same time as him, some of whom became relatives through the marriage of their children, became his most reliable partners during the days of fierce battles against the Taiping Army. Zeng Guofan was promoted exceptionally rapidly, mainly due to his mentor Muzhanga, a favored retainer of Emperor Daoguang, became the Academician of the Grand Secretariat （official rank 2） in 1847 at the age of 37 and was soon appointed the vice-minister of the Board of Rites. Zeng Guofan submitted a letter of admonition to the new emperor, Xianfeng, and barely escaped punishment for this. KIYOSAWA Kiyoshi as an Immigrant to the U.S.［Ⅰ］ : Focusing on his Christian Faith
Get PDFThis paper is the first part of the author’s study on the period of the immigration of KIYOSAWA Kiyoshi （1890 - 1945）to the United States from 1907 to 1918. It was the time of an upsurge of anti-Japanese movements all across the U.S. Kiyosawa is known for a representative liberal critic of foreign policy in modern history of Japan. He studied in Kensei-gijuku, which was a supplementary private school in Nagano.
The school principal was IGUCHI Kigenji, who had a firm faith in Christianity. He influenced students not to seek for worldly success. According to the previous researches, Kiyosawa seemed to believe in Christianity seriously but he abandoned it after he immigrated.
However, the author reached the conclusion that Kiyosawa, who hoped to receive a higher education and to succeed in his life, had not been positive to Iguchi’s advice even before he left for Seattle in December 1906. Kiyosawa had been reluctant to rely on Christianity from the beginning though he concealed his real thoughts in front of his former teacher.
During his immigration, he did not have to pretend to have a faith any longer because he gained self-confidence through struggling against difficulties and solitude. He became independent economically and morally and overcame Christianity.departmental bulletin pape

Charities in British Fiction : An Essay on Howards End
Get PDFThis article looks at how charity and philanthropy are described in English novels from the early nineteenth century to the beginning of twentieth century. Taking up several novels by well-known authors, it attempts to show that charitable or philanthropic acts are depicted with increasingly skeptical eyes from the mid-nineteenth century onward. The article then focuses on E. M. Forster’s Howards End (1910) and examines the Schlegel sisters’ attitude toward their lower-middle class friend, Leonard Bast. Their idea about how to help him marks a departure from the Victorian, philanthropic view of the poor and reflects the new ideas of the Liberal welfare reformers. However, the sisters’ effort to keep Leonard from falling into misery does not end in success. The issue is considered in relation to the relative strengths and weaknesses of the ethics of care and changing attitudes toward public welfare in general.departmental bulletin pape
