    No full text
The third civilization wave is characterized by the development of information society. In future, a high information availability and knowledge are conceived as prominent accelerators of economy. Under the third wave, the community of computer experts understands the network age. The attribute ‘network’ expresses current trends, i.e. e-business, virtual organizations, virtual teams, etc. better than the attribute ‘information’. The year 2000 is often designed as the start of the network age. This paper shows some interested features of the current state of Information Technology (IT) that have consequences for the society in the network age. It explains some quantitative aspects of the information explosion (how much information there is in the world) and shows one its possible consequence, the so-called digital immortality. Increasing significance of the practice-oriented research as well as the number of information system problems requiring a long-term research are also mentioned. We also discuss new features of the IT profession and achievements in the vision of the so-called intellectual networks

A glance at the growth and development of vocabulary control in Persian will make it clear that the process can be divided into three distinct stages: 1.  Preparation of lists of Persian terms selected by documentation centers during the indexing process. 2.  Translation into Persian of the thesauri available in English and French languages. 3.  Compilation of thesauri in Persian based on warranted terms derived from the terminology found in Persian documents, indexed by various centers in Iran. Nowadays, at least eleven Persian Thesauri are available with Iranian documentation centers, while others are in the making

This article proposes a revised technology acceptance model to measure customers ‘acceptance of internet banking, in Iran. This study uses the technology acceptance model, theory of planned behavior and theory of perceived risk to build a comprehensive model. We designed a questionnaire and used it to survey a randomly selected sample of customers of internet banking, and In June 2010, a sample of 349 customers of national bank of Iran completed the questionnaire. We analyzed the data using structuralalequation modeling (SEM) to evaluate the strength of the hypothesized relationships, if any, among the constructs. The results provide support of the proposed model and confirm its robustness in predicting customers’ intention to accept internet banking and imply that the perceived usefulness is the most important positive predictor and security risk is the most important negative predictor of the intention to use internet banking

A framework for integrating distributed healthcare information systems

    No full text
In the last two decades, the trend in healthcare information technology has been towards digital and multimedia concepts. The next generation of healthcare information systems will consist of a vast network of heterogeneous, autonomous and distributed imaging scanners, Hospital Information Systems (HIS), medical information from clinical departments such as Radiology Information Systems (RIS), and large quantities of multimedia medical data held on a range of Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS). Providing an organizational framework that can integrate this varied collection of resources is a key challenge system researchers and developers face. In order to increase the availability of global or previously non-accessible information and to address the demanding new information processing requirements for diverse image-assisted medical applications, there is a need to integrate HIS/RIS data and medical image data of Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS). This paper gives a description of the general requirements for HIS/RIS/PACS integration with reference to prefetching, network and image archives. The main purpose of this paper is to present an architecture to allow not just structured text, such as patient records to be accessed in a distributed environment, but also multimedia data such as PACS images. The system architecture consists of modules that provide kernel functionality (kernel functionality provides distributed access) and modules that are needed to fulfill the requirements of data handling within HIS/PACS. The system architecture will, thus, provide a facility for requesting, decomposing and processing a global query, which allows a clinician to request patient records along with the image associated with patient examinations

Liveliness of any library is directly related to the rate of using its information services and resources. Studying the amount of the existing information resources used by faculty members, who account for a considerable portion of the library users, can be a positive step for promoting the quality of library services and resources. In this descriptive survey, 72 percent of research community (Iran University of Medical Sciences' Faculty Members) answered the research questionnaire. Findings indicated that the rate of Central Library use was 18.8% in 2005. This study investigates the problems preventing the use of library services and resources. Also, it probes into the rate of using existing services and resources in the Central Library as well as faculty ranking in terms of library use. Finally, according to the findings, there are some recommendations for promoting the quality of existing services and resources in the Central Library of IUMS

The Behaviour and Perceptions of On-Line Consumers: Risk, Risk Perception and Trust

    Get PDF
The growth and the expansion of the Internet and the World Wide Web continue to impact society in new and amazing ways. The role of economic commerce has not been as dynamic as some predicted, but has still demonstrated remarkable success and tremendous potential. Any failure to meet some of the expectations may be explained in large part by questions and concerns surrounding existing methods of electronic commerce and of the Internet. A key negative perception centres on the security involved in Internet practice and electronic payment systems. Negative perceptions are then compounded and reinforced by massive media exposure of Internet security incidents. Many consumers still lack the necessary trust in on-line merchants and Internet security procedures and continue to use the Web to simply browse. The types of attack individuals face include confidence-trick or actual encounters calculated to extract bank or personal details, computer spyware that opens on accessing the Internet, enticing users with offers of non-existent free gifts while copying confidential files, and programmes that can infiltrate networks, operating within them undetected, ultimately causing them to crash. Social Engineering is one such method used by an attacker to get information. There are two main categories under which all social engineering attempts could be classified, computer or technology-based deception and human based deception. The technology-based approach is to deceive the user into believing that is interacting with the ‘real’ computer system (such as popup window, informing the user that the computer application has had a problem) and get the user to provide confidential information. The human approach is done through deception, by taking advantage of the victim’s ignorance, and the natural human inclination to be helpful and liked. One of the most effective technology-based approach is a scam, called “phishing” as a form of identity theft. This is a technique used to gain personal information for the purposes of identity theft, using fraudulent e-mail messages that appear to come from legitimate businesses. These authentic-looking messages are designed to fool recipients into divulging personal data such as account numbers and passwords, credit card numbers and Social Security numbers. This paper provides an overview of electronic commerce and the impact of risk and trust on on-line shopping consumer behaviour. Due to the growth and potential of on-line shopping and the lack of academic-based research on Internet-related consumer behaviour, there is a tremendous need for impartial, academic investigation into the behaviour and perceptions of on-line consumers

This study attempted to investigate the process and barriers of flow of technical information in KWPA[1]. A survey method was used to collect the data. Interviews with some key persons were also conducted. The target population included both experts and technical managers, and the information output of technical departments. Descriptive statistics and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient were applied to analyze the data. Results showed that overall production and use of technical information are relatively satisfactory, and the respondents generally used the technical. Lack of a holistic view of information management and systematic access to information were major drawbacks. The authors suggest applying a holistic view for information management to systematize the production and use of information and reduce the costs

Obstacles to IT Introduction in the Sudanese Commercial Banking Industry

    No full text
This paper draws on empirical research conducted in Sudan to examine the process of management of IT and organizational change in Sudanese Banking Industry (SBI). The study used dual methodology which included quantitative and qualitative techniques and focused on presenting findings on the process of managing and implementing IT in the SBI. Deductive and inductive data present very strong evidence to support the hypotheses that the General Managers do not view IT change as a key element of their work and this limited involvement constrains the process of change. Decision-making process to implement IT in the SBI was a top down model, and the main reason for the adoption of IT in Sudanese banks was to provide better banking services
