Investigating text power in predicting semantic similarity

    Get PDF
This article presents an empirical evaluation to investigate the distributional semantic power of abstract, body and full-text, as different text levels, in predicting the semantic similarity using a collection of open access articles from PubMed. The semantic similarity is measured based on two criteria namely, linear MeSH terms intersection and hierarchical MeSH terms distance. As such, a random sample of 200 queries and 20000 documents are selected from a test collection built on CITREC open source code. Sim Pack Java Library is used to calculate the textual and semantic similarities. The nDCG value corresponding to two of the semantic similarity criteria is calculated at three precision points. Finally, the nDCG values are compared by using the Friedman test to determine the power of each text level in predicting the semantic similarity. The results showed the effectiveness of the text in representing the semantic similarity in such a way that texts with maximum textual similarity are also shown to be 77% and 67% semantically similar in terms of linear and hierarchical criteria, respectively. Furthermore, the text length is found to be more effective in representing the hierarchical semantic compared to the linear one. Based on the findings, it is concluded that when the subjects are homogenous in the tree of knowledge, abstracts provide effective semantic capabilities, while in heterogeneous milieus, full-texts processing or knowledge bases is needed to acquire IR effectiveness

    Get PDF
The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between traditional citation indexes representing hot papers in the field of “Clinical Medicine” and their bookmarking and readership in “Mendeley software”. The citation counts of hot papers were extracted from Essential Science Indicators (ESI) and Web of Science (WoS). As an applied research adopting a descriptive-exploratory method, the present study used the Essential Science Indicators to retrieve hot articles published between 2014 and 2016, indexed in the category “Medical Sciences”. Each record was then searched in Mendeley to obtain the number of readership of the paper and the academic status of the users. The results showed a significant positive correlation between Mendeley readership and citation indexes in both ESI and WoS. Moreover, the most frequently-cited articles in both databases attracted more readers in Mendeley than lowly-cited publications and both hypotheses were confirmed. Moreover, the findings revealed that Mendeley users had assigned a total number of 3847 tags to the hot papers, with the tags ranging in frequency from zero to 38 for individual articles. Compared with author keywords and Plus, about 10 percent of users’ tags were either meaningless or repetitive. The value of present study shows that “Mendeley Sofware” with the possibility of tagging articles, can be used to create a searchable folksonomy of information and as a source of data in information retrieval studies, help professionals to manage their literatures and make their research life easier

This study aimed at evaluating the feasibility of identification, extraction, organization and sharing of personal knowledge of Kerman public librarians. This study was a qualitative one based on grounded theory. The research population consisted of all knowledge and information science experts in public libraries in Kerman and snowball sampling was used to select participants. In-depth interview was the data collection tool in this study. In order to ensure the validity and reliability of this research, Lincoln and Guba's evaluative criteria was adopted and data collected from the interview, were coded and analyzed. Personal knowledge is shared through group discussions, question and answer meetings with experts and elites or even sending an email to co-workers. Knowledge and information science experts in public libraries in Kerman have no definite tool to be always used by all for identifying of personal knowledge. The method of extraction of personal knowledge mostly depends upon the manner of organization of personal knowledge. Knowledge and information science experts’ success in personal knowledge management depends on letting out the knowledge available in their minds. In this regard, knowledge sharing which includes the dissemination or transfer of knowledge from one individual to a group or an organization is the fundamental factor for achieving goals and filling knowledge gaps in organizations. Therefore, it is the task of public libraries to promote the culture of personal knowledge sharing, create an encouraging and rewarding environment and establish trust among knowledge and information science experts at wor

    Get PDF
Query expansion is a method for improving retrieval performance by supplementing an original query with additional terms. This process improves the quality of search engine results and helps users to find the required information. In the recent years, different methods have been proposed in this area. In addition to such a variety of different approaches in this area and necessity of the study of their characteristics, the lack of a comprehensive classification based on candidate expansion terms extraction methods and also suitable and complete criteria to evaluate them, make the precise study, comparison and evaluation of methods for query expansion and choosing appropriate method based on need difficult for researchers. Therefore, in this paper a new useful framework is presented. In the proposed framework, in addition to the identification of three basic approaches based on the candidate expansion terms extraction methods for query expansion and expressing their properties, appropriate criteria for qualitative evaluation of these methods will be described. Next, the proposed approaches will be evaluated qualitatively based on these criteria. Using the systematic and structured framework proposed in this paper leads a useful platform for researchers to be provided for the comparative study of existing methods in the field, investigating their features specially their drawbacks to improve them and choosing appropriate method based on their needs

Synergy in the Iranian Innovation Systems at Regional and National Levels In the Triple-Helix Context

    Get PDF
The synergies for the Iranian regional and national innovation systems among the geographical, technological and organizational distributions of firms were measured. Among the data of 87934 active industrial firms (December 2015), merely 46150 firms could be classified using NACE codes into high-tech, medium-tech and knowledge intensive sectors which in turn geographically divided into five regions. Accordingly, both the T0 and ΔTGTO of Iran at the national level had negative signs (-480.6 and -5.14 mbits, respectively), however all the ΔTGTOs in each separate region was highly positive denoting that national agglomeration significantly adds to the synergy in the system and a highly integrated national innovation system was proposed in Iran. Regions 1 (including Tehran as the capital) as well as region 4 (including Khuzestan which contains enormous oil and gas resources and industries) caused less disturbance to the national synergy compared with the other three regions (ΔTGTOs= +18.1 and +22.2 mbits, respectively). The decomposition of sectorial technologies showed that in contrast to many other countries, especially for west European countries, high-tech manufacturing and knowledge intensive services were the main drives of knowledge-based configuration in the regional economy of Iran, while medium-tech manufacturing tend to uncouple the economy from the regional configuratio

The current web evaluation models are mainly based on the technical evaluation of the site and its appearance and usability from user's perspective. In other words, the site is evaluated as an independent entity from the underlying organization that it represents. The focus of this study is on evaluation of organizations' websites based on the quality management concepts. In this way, the measured performance indicators will be used to find the deficiencies of the websites and recommend corrections. For evaluating the organization’s success in its website function, the concept of quality management is used and since evaluation and improvement are the center of attention in this model, the model is called Ev-Imp, which Ev stands for evaluation and Imp stands for improvement. Model includes four main components consist of objectives, processes, criteria and feedback. With the use of feedback tools such as quantitative and qualitative questionnaire for groups of stakeholders and service providers ,the website’s weaknesses and strengths would be identified and with analyzing the website’s weaknesses required improvement would be determined and corrective action would be don
