    No full text
Mahabharata, this rich epic of Hindus is an intricately woven tableau comprising wisdom and insights for the inheritors of this legacy. Mahabharata is not just about kingdom and regalia; rather, it enunciates the nuanced understanding of governance and serves as an impeccable guide to stewardship. The main objective of this paper is to critically examine key dimensions of governance, specifically Raj dharma, justice, the dire need for a strong ruler and the safety and security of subjects, as delineated in the Shanti Parva. This conceptual paper is based on qualitative research methods. To do so, the existing literature on this topic has been dealt with and this paper is based on theoretical interpretation of books, articles and relevant websites. Despite not having civic democracies back in those days, this research has eventually come up with some ingenious parallels between the administrative practices of those days and contemporary precepts of effective governance. Introduction: The study's objective was to determine selected nutritional and anthropometric parameters of patients with early Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Methods: The socio-demographic characteristics, and haemoglobin (Hb), anthropometric parameters, and seven site skin fold thicknesses of early RA patients (n=100) were compared with healthy controls (n=100) from the year 2018-2020. Body densities (BD) and body fat percentages (BF%) were calculated according to Jackson & Pollock anthropometric equations. The data were analyzed by SPSS-version-20, considering p<0.05 as statistically significant. Results: The mean age of the participants was 48.6±7.6 years, and the majority were female (84%). Female RA patients had significantly higher BMI (26.9±4.5 kg/m2 ) (p=0.04), Waist Circumference (WC) [97.7±11.9 cm] (p<0.001), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) [0.98±0.10] values (p<0.001) compared to female controls (BMI-25.7±3.5 kg/m2, WC-91.0±9.5 cm, and WHR-0.93±0.06). Female patients had a significantly lower BD (1.030±0.010 g/ml) (p<0.001) and significantly higher BF% (26.3±5.1) (p<0.01) than controls. Abdominal obesity was evident among 95.0% of all RA patients and 92.0% of controls. Hb levels of male (12.5±1.2 g/dl) and female RA patients (11.9±1.1 g/dl) were significantly lower compared to healthy males (14.5±1.3 g/dl) and females (14.6±1.9 g/dl) (p<0.001). Anaemia was observed among 50% of total early RA patients and 5% of controls. Conclusion: A significant proportion of early RA patients was anaemic and had anthropometric impairment compared to healthy controls. Thus, the onset of nutritional impairment among RA patients should be evaluated even at the early stages of RA.Keywords: Early rheumatoid arthritis, Nutritional status, Anemia, Obesity, Anthropometr

A Study on the Social Contribution of Graduates in Public Universities of Sri Lanka

    No full text
Sri Lanka continues to offer free education from grade one through the completion of a first degree, aiming to foster human capital as a key driver of socio-economic development. Despite the government's significant investment in maintaining this policy, households also allocate substantial resources to education. Graduates represent the ultimate output of this free education system, making it crucial to examine their social contributions to the nation. As education serves as a fundamental indicator of a country's development, the role of graduates has gained prominence in the current context of multiple crises. This study aims to assess the social contributions of Sri Lankan graduates in the face of shifting macroeconomic conditions. Data for the research were gathered through structured questionnaires and interviews with graduates from the Kurunegala district. A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods was employed to analyse responses from a sample of 500 participants. Most graduates (73.41%) are not members of any local organisation, society, or club, while a minority (26.59%) are. This suggests graduates often avoid societal involvement, likely due to busy schedules. Annual gatherings have a significant impact on social relationships, with a median value of 79.412, benefiting participants and enhancing their social esteem. However, the societal contributions of graduates remain insufficient, prompting a need for state universities and authorities to encourage greater involvement

Accordingly, the potentialities expressed by the short story writer in Rasa Polawa in accordance with the genre of the short story cycle were identified here. Accordingly, the author has established the short stories in the Rasa Polawa short story cycle independently and has also been able to maintain the interrelationship between the short stories well. Due to this, each short story has an independent semantic aesthetic and a thematic dimension that is raised through the entire short story cycle can also be identified. In Rasa Polawa, formal peculiarities consistent with the short story cycle genre can also be seen. Consciously created gaps in the short stories, open endings, etc. The language used in Rasa Polawa is also excellent and elegant. The characterization is also connected to the semantic function of the short story cycle. The main conclusion of this study was that the creative peculiarities used by Prabath Jayasinghe in the Rasa Polawa short story cycle are more consistent with the characteristics of the short story cycle genre. Get PDF
Ehela Kola Kayama (EKK) in Deshiya Chikitsa Samgrahaya is a distinctive Sri Lankan traditional preparation for malnutrition. WHO defines malnutrition as deficiencies, excesses, imbalances, and impaired utilization; Sri Lanka's underweight children rise to 15.3% in 2022. The study aimed to review the ingredients of EKK with pharmacodynamic properties and introduce it as a functional food for malnutrition. The study follows PRISMA guidelines and searches 64 journal articles in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science databases, and Google Scholar search engine from 2021 to 2023. The ingredients of EKK are Ehela Kola (Cassia fistula), Parana Siyambala (Tamarindus indica L.), Suduru (Cuminum cyminum), Mahaduru (Foeniculum vulgare), Asamodagam (Trachyspermum ammi), Sudu Lunu (Allium arenarium), Sungu (Pistacia integerrima), Aralu (Terminalia Chebula), Viyali Iguru (Zingiber officinale), Gammiris (Piper nigrum), and Thippili (Piper longum). Upon analyzing Katu (pungent) and Kashaya (astringent) tastes, Laghu (lightness) and Ruksha (roughness) properties were prominent. Ushna Veerya (hot potency) and Katu Vipaka (post-digestive effect) are found in most ingredients. Deepana (appetizer) and Pachana (digestive), Ushna Veerya, Katu and Tikta Rasa, Laghu, Ruksha, and Thikshna Guna promote Agni (digestive fire) and relieve Srotorodha (channel obstruction), which corrects Dhatu Poshana Krama (nourishes the tissues). Ayurveda emphasizes the correction of Agni, a vital factor for health, and treating ailments including malnutrition. It improves Ojas (immunity) and provides Vyadhikshamathva (resistance to diseases). Most components contain active chemicals, such as Glycosides, Fatty Acids, Flavonoids, vitamin B complexes, and Iron, which are nutritional and digestive stimulators with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties. As per the reviewed data, it can be concluded that EKK is a potent digestion promoter in individuals, enhances metabolism, and empowers the process of Saptha Dhatu (essential body tissues) formation and Ojas, thereby having potential qualities as a functional food. Further clinical and chemical studies must be conducted to introduce it as a functional food for malnutrition. &nbsp
