Youth Civic Engagement in the Philippine Uplands: The Case of the Higaunons in Brgy. Kiabo, Malitbog, Bukidnon, Philippines
Meaningful civic engagement that is inclusive of cultural minorities is vital for thriving democratic societies. This study investigates civic engagement among Higaunon youth, an indigenous community in the Southern Philippines, addressing a gap in the literature on minority engagement in democratic processes. Through focus group discussions (FGDs) with the youth and tribal leaders, key informant interviews (KIIs), and personal interviews, the research explores four engagement domains: grassroots community organizing, civic activism, community service, and political participation. Findings reveal that Higaunon youth actively engage across these areas, driven by social ties, cultural traditions, communal identity, and leadership influence. Notably, indigenous frameworks of engagement, promoted by tribal leaders, shape their civic behaviors. However, challenges such as religious divisions, economic constraints, cultural erosion, and lack of institutional support hinder participation. Despite these challenges, engagement yields significant benefits to the youth through strengthened youth empowerment, community cohesion, and cultural preservation.

Cocos nucifera (Coconut Palm): A Holistic Appraisal of Its Bioactive Compounds, Therapeutic Potential, Industrial Utility, and Role in Sustainability
Cocos nucifera, commonly known as the coconut palm or the "tree of life," is a versatile plant with significant nutritional, therapeutic, industrial, and ecological importance. This review highlights the bioactive compounds, health benefits, industrial applications, and sustainability contributions of the coconut tree. A comprehensive literature search across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect was conducted using standardized inclusion and exclusion criteria. Findings reveal that coconut-derived phenolics, flavonoids, cytokinins, and medium-chain fatty acids contribute to robust antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, and anti-cancer activities, supported by assays such as 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP), 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and Anti-inflammatory. Virgin coconut oil demonstrates superior free-radical scavenging compared to refined oil due to its rich phenolic and lauric acid content, while coconut water shows significant cytoprotective and anti-ageing effects attributed to its cytokinins. Industrially, husk and shell by-products are valorized into bio-composites, activated carbon, biochar, and construction materials, advancing principles of the circular economy. In agriculture, coir pith enhances soil fertility and water retention, while copra meal serves as a protein-rich livestock feed. Emerging frontiers include nanotechnology, where coconut-derived carbon and nanocellulose are applied in drug delivery, water purification, and tissue engineering. Despite promising laboratory and preclinical results, translational research gaps remain, particularly in clinical validation of coconut’s anti-cancer and metabolic benefits. Overall, this review highlights the coconut tree as a holistic bioresource with potential to address global challenges in health, sustainability, and renewable innovation, underscoring its enduring role as a “tree of life.”

Public Awareness of the Exposure and Effects of Microplastics on Humans: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study in the Colombo District, Sri Lanka
Plastic particles less than 5mm in size are a growing global concern, making the environment more vulnerable. Raising public awareness of their harmful effects might help to reduce plastics entering the environment. The study aimed to assess public knowledge and attitudes towards microplastics and their adverse health effects in the Colombo District, Sri Lanka. A descriptive, cross-sectional study design was used, and data were collected from the general public using an online Google Form. The online questionnaire included questions on knowledge and attitudes towards microplastics. A total of 510 responses were received; after excluding 21 incomplete responses, 489 (95.8%) were included in the analysis. The responses were analysed for descriptive statistics: frequencies and percentages with SPSS version 26. Out of 489, 405(82.8%) had a university degree, and 313(64%) were females. Regarding knowledge, 473(96.7%) and 446(91.2%) recognized that microplastics harm human and marine life, respectively. Only 228 (46.6%) identified improper disposal as a primary cause. Even though 363 (74.2%) knew about the toxicity of microplastics, only 179(36.6%) and 212(43.4%) knew about its crossing into gastric epithelium and food chain integrations, respectively. Regarding attitudes, while 370(75.7%) considered living with fewer microplastics, only 37(7.6%) believed they could completely live without them. All individuals (n=489[100.0%]) advocated for biodegradable alternatives. However, 6(1.2%) individuals firmly expressed their unwillingness to reduce the use of microplastics. The study identified knowledge gaps and uncertain behavior to reduce pollution, highlighting the need for effective public education and stronger waste management policies.

An Anthropological Study on the ‘Killa’ (Defilement) Concept Related to Paddy Farming
This research investigates the relationship between the concept of Killa and paddy farming. The main purpose is to study the socio-cultural impact of the practices related to the killa concept among the taboos and practices of paddy cultivation. Specific objectives include identifying the concept of Killa as an important part of rites of passage and human life, studying the socio-cultural value of the concept of Killa, and its present practice and interpretations. The Applied Anthropological study selected fifty farmers from Uhana Divisional Secretariat in Ampara district as primary respondents, through judgmental sampling method. Respondents were of the opinion that apart from birth, puberty, monthly menstruation and death, food is also associated with killi. The most significant entity about Killa was that it was feminine and primarily affected. The farmers said it was a taboo for women to come to the threshing floor, and it was mentioned as an age-old custom. In addition to this, threshing is also prohibited for the male who have been exposed to killa. If a baby is born in the home of a farmer, he is prohibited from threshing for 30 days due to the vadum killa on his crops. The onset of puberty is known by the villagers as Kotahalu Killa and lasts for fourteen days. When a householder or close relative dies, it is forbidden to come to the threshing floor for three months. Therefore, it was realized from the comments of the villagers that the barriers among paddy cultivation are very strong and have remained secure from the past to the present. It may be concluded that farmers who were carrying on paddy farming with divinity believe the concept of killa. According to that, since the past till the present days, the same taboos were followed and the cultivation was carried out with great reverence.
