    Acoustic Atmospheres: A Contribution to the Study of Ecological Aesthetics

    The German philosopher Gernot Böhme first presented the ideas for his article at the Symposium “Acoustic Ecology and Ecological Aesthetics,” on June 6, 1999 as part of the larger festival Stadtstimmen (City Voices), conceptualized by Sabine Breitsameter and organised by the city of Wiesbaden, Ger- many, (March-Oct., 1999). Critical of the natural sciences for excluding aesthetics, i.e. people’s perception and state of being, from their study of ecology, he takes the reader on a tour-de-force of philosophical thought, examining ecology, and ultimately acoustic ecology, through his “aesthetics of atmospheres.” At the symposium he spoke of ecology as the relationship between the quality of an environment and people’s state-of-being inside that environment. This relationship creates what he calls the atmosphere of a place or situation. Acoustic atmospheres become the centre of discussion in this article, examining both music and the soundscape as well as people’s forms of listening in the context of ecology

    The Concept of Soundscape and Music Education in Japan: Re-examining the Imposition of European Musical Epistemology

    Michel Foucault (1966) says, “if we study thought as an archaeologist studies buried cities, we can see that Man was born yesterday, and that he soon may die,” (Reader, 1987: p. 7). Foucault clarifies that the Western people in the twentieth century are still “the prisoner of a determined system”(Ardagh, 1980: p. 538) of the nineteenth century, bourgeois-humanist. Post-modernism in art was begun as an antithesis to a preconceived idea of Western art including its aesthetics in the twentieth century. This movement proposes several goals, as follows: a) anti-human-centrism, b) anti-Euro-centrism, b) anti-ethno-centrism, and anti-logo-centrism, to develop a new definition of art. Traditional Western music education based on Platonic ethos and Aristotelian mimesis has also exerted great influence on Japanese music education. Today there is an urgent need to bring contemporary discourses to the clinic of Japanese music education. In this article, I describe new types of music education in Japan to contribute to that discourse. The initial idea was carried out during a workshop in the “Exploratorium Exhibition,” at the Science and Technology Hall in Tokyo, sponsored by Science and Technology Hall, Sony Education Encouragement Foundation and Asahi Newspaper Publishing Co. It was held in August and September 1989. The workshop was based on the concept of soundscape as evolved by the Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer in the early seventies at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada

    Pure Geographer: Observations on J.G. Granö and Soundscape Studies

    Senses and aesthetics are fundamental elements in constructing the relationship to environment. The environment perceived as a work of art does not consist just of an aesthetic experience, but it could contribute to the critical evaluation of the environment (Niskanen 1996, 45; Karjalainen 2004, 55). These aesthetic and critical evaluations of the environment are both included in two ground-breaking books of different disciplines and eras, Pure Geography and The Tuning of the World. Finnish geographer Johannes Gabriel Granö’s Pure Geography was originally published in German (Reine Geographie, 1929), then in his native tongue Finnish (Puhdas maantiede, 1930), and finally in English nearly 70 years later (Pure Geography, 1997). Contrary to fellow scholars of his time, Granö aimed to utilize all senses in his geographical research and in order to do so, he needed to create a terminology for visual, auditory, olfactory and tactile phenomena sensed in the environment and to construct a cartographic representation of landscape (see also Wojciechowski 2008)

Our value of inquiry-rich, play-based, cross-disciplinary learning is embedded in every aspect of design, from fun interactive exhibits, engaging stage shows, and unique school programs. Throughout Science World you will discover that each gallery focuses on different themes and topics. Gallery spaces have their own narratives, learning goals, and outcomes. One of newest galleries at Science World is our Tinkering Space: The WorkSafeBC Gallery. The Tinkering Space has daily tinkering programming where you can solve problems, make new things from existing parts, create something cool and imaginative, and learn through experimenting and making mistakes. You’ll also learn about the science behind safety and how important it is to choose the right tools for the job. This informal learning environment captures the playful spirit of Science World all in one place. Creating the Tinkering Space is an iterative journey, and we continue to work hard to build out the visitor experience and pedagogical practice we have today

    Emerging directions in acoustic ecology – trends within Canada’s national protected areas system

    A survey of ecologists in Parks Canada’s protected area units (PAU) was conducted to understand the breadth of acoustic ecology applications, particularly current emphases, trends over the past 2 decades, and future trajectories. 87 acoustic projects, in 36 PAU, involve detection of species, monitoring of ecosystems, and to a smaller extent documentation of soundscape, anthropogenic noise and cultural sound. On average these PAU have >3 acoustic projects each; the longest project conducted for 18 years. Focus of projects has evolved across years (through birds, bats, marine, soundscape).  Described are emerging directions in acoustic ecology evident in Canadian national PAU, including: enhancing research on most taxa (i.e., aquatic species); improving species detection to identify changing spatial-temporal patterns (e.g., climate, noise); documenting anthropogenic noise impact; comparative analysis of biodiversity changes in soundscapes; and increasing technique efficiencies (e.g., automated detection, broad scales). Acoustics could contribute to PAU research priorities (e.g., arthropod inventory, geophysical rate changes, fragmentation restoration, population dynamics), and objectives (e.g., societal wellbeing, cultural landscape). Needed is commitment to document metadata, secure long-term data storage, and contribute to Open Data to ensure future utility of acoustic information. We hope the identification of these emerging directions help formulate momentum and synergies between agencies.&nbsp
