ChatGPT Responses to Glaucoma Questions Based on Patient Health Literacy Levels
The 62nd Annual Medical Student Research Forum at UT Southwestern Medical Center (Tuesday, January 30, 2024, 3-6 p.m., D1.700 Lecture Hall)BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a complex, progressive neurodegenerative disease of the optic nerve, commonly found in the elderly. Patients usually do not understand the complexities of the disease and struggle to find answers from different glaucoma sources and sites which may be difficult to understand. AI chatbots such as ChatGPT(r) have recently emerged as a useful tool to gather information on any medical question. However, the role of ChatGPT in generating answers to glaucoma treatment questions is not well documented.
Health literacy is defined as the basic reading and mathematical skills required to find, understand, and use health-related information. The average reading level among US adults is 7th-8th grade; however, most medical information is often written at a higher reading level. The purpose of this study was to determine whether ChatGPT can tailor responses to glaucoma treatment questions based on patient health literacy levels.
HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesize that ChatGPT may satisfactorily tailor answers to glaucoma questions based on patient health literacy level.
METHODS: We selected 27 common questions relating to glaucoma medications, lasers, and surgical treatments. The questions were inputted into ChatGPT, first without instructions. Then, ChatGPT was instructed to tailor responses to 4 health literacy levels based on the US National Assessment of Health Literacy: below basic (BB), basic (B), intermediate (I), and proficient (P). Responses were analyzed using Flesch-Kincaid (FKC) grade level [0-18+] corresponding to years of education, word count, and syllables. Kruskal-Wallis rank sum tests were used to analyze the data.
RESULTS: The mean FKC grade level of ChatGPT responses without any instructions about health literacy levels was 12.83, corresponding to a 12th-grade or "fairly difficult to read" level. When instructed to tailor responses, the mean FKC grade level of BB, B, I, and P responses were 11.50, 12.49, 12.95, and 13.12 (p<0.001), respectively. The mean word count of BB, B, I, and P answers (82, 117, 163, 177, respectively) correspondingly increased (p<0.001).
CONCLUSION: ChatGPT in its current form is unable to provide easy to comprehend responses to glaucoma questions for the public. Future AI chatbots may need to be trained on not only the specific databases, such as medical, conversational, computer science, and finance, but to be able to provide easily understandable answers at all levels of health literacy to cater to a wider sector of society.Southwestern Medical Foundatio
When "why" matters: reasons in pediatric decision-making
Tuesday, November 12, 2024; noon to 1 p.m. (Central Time); Room NB2.100A or via Zoom. "When 'Why' Matters: Reasons in Pediatric Decision-Making." Erica K. Salter, Ph.D., Chair of the Department of Health Care Ethics at the Center for Health Care Ethics and Associate Professor of Health Care Ethics and Pediatrics at Saint Louis University.Using case examples, this presentation will explore the normative dimensions of medical decision-making on behalf of children. A framework of six inter-related principles will be offered to define the contours of moral agency and obligation in pediatric decision making, including authority principles, guidance principles, intervention principles and relational principles. In particular, the role of "reasonableness" and reason-giving will be discussed as it relates both to decisions about state intervention on parental decisions and about shared decision-making conversations.UT Southwestern--Program in Ethic
Don't Be Afraid to Dream Big: Hosting a Social Work Intern in the Library
OBJECTIVE: Students are also people with social service needs. To meet these needs, libraries are moving toward whole person librarianship, or applying social work skills to library services. Librarianship and social work share some of the same core values making it a fitting collaboration. Social workers can provide discreet, peer guidance to students about available resources. They can also train library personnel to improve their skills in social work areas, provide outreach, and design programming. METHODS: A social worker internship position was created to improve student's physical, social, emotional, and financial health. In 2022, the Libraries received approval for a year-long institutional grant to fund a social work internship position. RESULTS: The intern developed programs for students, identified needs and appropriate resources, and provided training for library employees. A LibGuide and a resource intake form were created to provide students with a list of institutional and community resources as well as provided a discreet means of requesting assistance. CONCLUSIONS: Hosting a social work intern provided the opportunity to meet with students where they are and point them to resources that are helpful to their specific situation. Piecing Together a Dream: The Development and Evolution of the PIECES Cycle for Reviews
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the author was not able to present this paper at the scheduled time. However, the author has given permission for the presentation files to be shared.In 2017, I developed a framework, PIECES, to describe the steps of a systematic review for the book I co-edited with Sarah Jewell, Assembling the Pieces of a Systematic Review: A Guide for Librarians. As I used the framework to teach workshops and provide consultations, I realized it needed to evolve. In 2022, Sarah and co-edited a new book, Piecing Together Systematic Reviews and Other Evidence Syntheses, I introduced an updated version of the framework, which is now a cycle of review projects, representing the multiple phases of a review project and the possibility of updating the review in the future. Recently I had an epiphany, and I am editing the cycle again. This presentation will discuss the evolution of the PIECES review cycle to its current state and compare it to other models for systematic review steps
Outreach Promoting Health Literacy: Forum Discussing Collaborative Health Education Promotional Opportunities
Health science and medical librarians often find themselves at the crossroads of information dissemination, community outreach, and educational support. At the same time, the isolation within their roles and project management challenges can hinder progress. The librarians are working in partnership on initiatives addressing information literacy and health disparities, recognizing these as common and pressing issues within their diverse communities. They are devising comprehensive programs using literature for children and adults to educate community members on effectively accessing, evaluating, and utilizing health care information. Larger projects need more hands. Partnership across the SCC/MLA region provides expanded voices to contribute to our ideation and inspire other librarians to engage in collaborative opportunities and community health literacy projects. Through round table discussions, attendees will uncover how communication among health education professionals, students, and librarians accelerates project development, enriches programming, and fosters skill acquisition. This session will emphasize the importance of breaking down silos and fostering autonomy within collaborative frameworks. Groups will participate in an exercise based on our current research to begin table discussions using children's literature. Attendees will learn how working collectively can amplify their impact, particularly for solo librarians and those in small libraries
Diminished Ovarian Reserve (DOR) or Low Ovarian Reserve (LOR): Online Information Available to the Consumer
OBJECTIVE: To determine the scope and the readability of information available online to the consumer on diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) or Low Ovarian Reserve (LOR) METHOD: Two internet searches were conducted to reduce bias. The keywords used: diminished ovarian reserve and low ovarian reserve. The websites were analyzed using CRAAP (currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose) test. A Flesch Kincaid calculator was used to determine the reading level of the information for each site. The information was recorded using Excel. Themes were identified. Content analysis was conducted. PRELIMINARY RESULTS: The most common internet sources were from universities and medical institutions and fertility clinics. There were common phrases and words such as genetic,age, dordef, donoreggs, freeze eggs, egg quantity, egg quality. The themes identified in the resources were definitions, age, egg quality, egg quantity, risk factors, treatments. The reading level, word count, number of sentences identified by applying Flesch Kincaid will be reported. PRELIMINARY CONCLUSION: There is not an abundance of information on the Internet with fertility clinics having a strong presence. Initial findings indicate that the reading levels were difficult, which translates to college level. Overall, the information available online to the consumer includes DOR definitions, causes, diagnosis, and treatments, however the information is too hard for the average consumer to understand
The Proximity Project: Using GIS to Develop Collaborations and Partnerships
The Proximity Project was developed to identify entities who develop, share, or need health information for underserved or at-risk communities. The project goal was to define which organizations among thousands would be optimal opportunities to focus limited community engagement resources. The project utilizes spatial thinking and the social psychology principle of proximity to understand the geographical relationship among libraries, public health departments, and community-based health organizations in combination with an online mapping tool. Spatial thinking uses the properties of space to communicate, reason, and solve problems. The proximity principle predicts that organizations that are closer together in a physical environment are more likely to form a relationship than those farther away. In addition, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was used to overlay geographic data across a map to help identify communities at risk, their proximity to services, and potential service collaborators to address these gaps. The value of GIS data is that it can help us understand where things happen, and spatial data can help us construct why things happen. Mapping assisted staff in identifying entity clusters that could potentially lead to partnerships and collaboration, and locating service or resource gaps in the community
Establishing an Interdisciplinary Evidence Synthesis Support Service
PURPOSE: This poster describes the establishment of an interdisciplinary evidence synthesis support service. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: A public R1 with an enrollment of more than 40,000 and no medical or veterinary school. BRIEF/DESCRIPTION: Our researchers do evidence synthesis work, but library support has been informal and inconsistently available. In addition, turnover around COVID led to a lack of qualified librarians to provide ES Support. In this project we look at the policy development, structural decisions and training resources used to establish a formal evidence synthesis support service. Starting with no formal policy and limited evidence synthesis experience in the library we describe our process and present our recommendations. RESULTS/OUTCOMES: The library has created a formal structure to provide evidence synthesis support to researchers in disciplines including nursing, social work, and public administration
Dream Big: How the NNLM Region 3 Emerging Leadership Program Provided Guidance, Support, and Reduced Barriers to Librarians Wanting to Be Leaders in Health Sciences Libraries
Through storytelling, NNLM Region 3 Emerging Leader recent recipients will share their experiences: who they met and what they learned that helped and influenced where they are at their current positions. They will also share how the program guided them in planning and working towards their future goals. Participants provided feedback on enhancing the program and those ideas were incorporated into the program
