    High‐Voltage Supercapacitive Swing Adsorption of Carbon Dioxide

    Supercapacitive swing adsorption (SSA) with garlic roots‐derived activated carbon achieves a record adsorption capacity of 312 mmol kg −1 at a low energy consumption of 72 kJ mol −1 and high mass loadings (>30 mg cm −2 ) at 1.0 V for 85%N 2 /15%CO 2 mixtures. The activated carbons are inexpensively prepared in a one‐step process using potassium carbonate, and air as activators. The adsorption capacity further increases with increasing voltage. At a voltage of 1.4 V, a sorption capacity of 524 mmol kg −1 at an energy consumption of 130 kJ mol −1 can be achieved. The volumetric sorption capacity is also enhanced and reaches values of 85.7 mol m −3 at 1.0 V, and 126 mol m −3 at 1.4 V. Cycle stability for at least 130 h is demonstrated

    Won\u27t you be my neighbor?

    Social identities are an important resource, especially during times of crisis. They provide shared meaning, as well as access to social and instrumental support. The COVID‐19 pandemic, although global in nature, was experienced very locally; many people stopped traveling and were often confined to their homes and neighborhoods. We reasoned this would make American residents\u27 local community identities especially important. We collected data at five time points between April 2020 and March 2021 and measured American adults\u27 social identification with their local community, identification with a self‐nominated important group, and stress. We found that stress decreased over the first few months of the pandemic, then leveled out. Importantly, this decrease was more pronounced among people who strongly identified with their local communities. Furthermore, community identities were stronger predictors of stress decreases than social groups that respondents themselves nominated as highly important to them (e.g., family, friends). These results held controlling for age, gender, political conservatism, and other variables. This research provides important insights into the importance of social identities, and specifically local communities, during times of crisis

    Design of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8-Functionalized Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasound Transducer Gravimetric Sensors for Gas and Hydrocarbon Vapor Detection

    A capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducer (CMUT) was engineered and functionalized with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) dispersed in a photoresist AZ1512HS (AZ) matrix to function as a gravimetric gas sensor. The sensor response was recorded in the presence of nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide, and methane gases as well as water, acetylene, a propane/butane mixture, n-hexane, gasoline, and diesel vapors. The photoresist matrix alone was found to have a negligible response to all the gases and vapors, except for water vapor. No visible difference in sensor response was detected when switching from nitrogen to methane gas. However, a strong shift in the sensor resonance frequency was observed when exposed to higher hydrocarbons, ranging from 1 kHz for acetylene to 7.5 kHz for gasoline. Even longer-chain hydrocarbons, specifically kerosene and more so diesel, had a significantly reduced sensor frequency shift compared with gasoline. Sensors functionalized with a thin film of AZ+ZIF-8 demonstrated higher sensitivity in their response to a hydrocarbon molecular mass than without functionalization.</jats:p

    Disease decreases variation in host community structure in an old-field grassland

    Disease may drive variation in host community structure by modifying the interplay of deterministic and stochastic processes that shape communities. For instance, deterministic processes like ecological selection can benefit species less impacted by disease. When communities have higher levels of disease and disease consistently selects for certain host species, this can reduce variation in host community composition. On the other hand, when host communities are less impacted by disease and selection is weaker, stochastic processes (e.g., drift, dispersal) may play a bigger role in host community structure, which can increase variation among communities. While effects of disease on host community structure have been quantified in field experiments, few have addressed the role of disease in modulating variation in structure among host communities. To address this, we conducted a field experiment spanning three years, using a tractable system: foliar fungal pathogens in an old-field grassland community dominated by the grassLolium arundinaceum, tall fescue. We reduced foliar fungal disease burden in replicate host communities (experimental plots in intact vegetation) in three fungicide regimens that varied in the seasonal duration of fungicide treatment and included a fungicide-free control. We measured host diversity, biomass, and variation in community structure among replicate communities. Disease reduction generally decreased plant richness and increased aboveground biomass relative to communities experiencing ambient levels of disease. These changes in richness and aboveground biomass were consistent across years despite changes in structure of the plant communities over the experiment’s three years. Importantly, disease reduction amplified host community variation, suggesting that disease diminished the degree to which host communities were structured by stochastic processes. These results of experimental disease reduction both highlight the potential importance of stochastic processes in plant communities and reveal the potential for disease to regulate variation in host community structure.</jats:p

    Findings From the World Mental Health Surveys of Civil Violence Exposure and Its Association With Subsequent Onset and Persistence of Mental Disorders

    ImportanceUnderstanding the association of civil violence with mental disorders is important for developing effective postconflict recovery policies.ObjectiveTo estimate the association between exposure to civil violence and the subsequent onset and persistence of common mental disorders (in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition [DSM-IV]) in representative surveys of civilians from countries that have experienced civil violence since World War II.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsThis study used data from cross-sectional World Health Organization World Mental Health (WMH) surveys administered to households between February 5, 2001, and January 5, 2022, in 7 countries that experienced periods of civil violence after World War II (Argentina, Colombia, Lebanon, Nigeria, Northern Ireland, Peru, and South Africa). Data from respondents in other WMH surveys who immigrated from countries with civil violence in Africa and Latin America were also included. Representative samples comprised adults (aged ≥18 years) from eligible countries. Data analysis was performed from February 10 to 13, 2023.ExposuresExposure was defined as a self-report of having been a civilian in a war zone or region of terror. Related stressors (being displaced, witnessing atrocities, or being a combatant) were also assessed. Exposures occurred a median of 21 (IQR, 12-30) years before the interview.Main Outcomes and MeasuresThe main outcome was the retrospectively reported lifetime prevalence and 12-month persistence (estimated by calculating 12-month prevalence among lifetime cases) of DSM-IV anxiety, mood, and externalizing (alcohol use, illicit drug use, or intermittent explosive) disorders.ResultsThis study included 18 212 respondents from 7 countries. Of these individuals, 2096 reported that they were exposed to civil violence (56.5% were men; median age, 40 [IQR, 30-52] years) and 16 116 were not exposed (45.2% were men; median age, 35 [IQR, 26-48] years). Respondents who reported being exposed to civil violence had a significantly elevated onset risk of anxiety (risk ratio [RR], 1.8 [95% CI, 1.5-2.1]), mood (RR, 1.5 [95% CI, 1.3-1.7]), and externalizing (RR, 1.6 [95% CI, 1.3-1.9]) disorders. Combatants additionally had a significantly elevated onset risk of anxiety disorders (RR, 2.0 [95% CI, 1.3-3.1]) and refugees had an increased onset risk of mood (RR, 1.5 [95% CI, 1.1-2.0]) and externalizing (RR, 1.6 [95% CI, 1.0-2.4]) disorders. Elevated disorder onset risks persisted for more than 2 decades if conflicts persisted but not after either termination of hostilities or emigration. Persistence (ie, 12-month prevalence among respondents with lifetime prevalence of the disorder), in comparison, was generally not associated with exposure.ConclusionsIn this survey study of exposure to civil violence, exposure was associated with an elevated risk of mental disorders among civilians for many years after initial exposure. These findings suggest that policy makers should recognize these associations when projecting future mental disorder treatment needs in countries experiencing civil violence and among affected migrants.</jats:sec

    Nucleotide exchange is sufficient for Hsp90 functions in vivo

    AbstractHsp90 is an essential eukaryotic chaperone that regulates the activity of many client proteins. Current models of Hsp90 function, which include many conformational rearrangements, specify a requirement of ATP hydrolysis. Here we confirm earlier findings that the Hsp82-E33A mutant, which binds ATP but does not hydrolyze it, supports viability ofS. cerevisiae, although it displays conditional phenotypes. We find binding of ATP to Hsp82-E33A induces the conformational dynamics needed for Hsp90 function. Hsp90 orthologs with the analogous EA mutation from several eukaryotic species, including humans and disease organisms, support viability of bothS. cerevisiaeandSz. pombe. We identify second-site suppressors of EA that rescue its conditional defects and allow EA versions of all Hsp90 orthologs tested to support nearly normal growth of both organisms, without restoring ATP hydrolysis. Thus, the requirement of ATP for Hsp90 to maintain viability of evolutionarily distant eukaryotic organisms does not appear to depend on energy from ATP hydrolysis. Our findings support earlier suggestions that exchange of ATP for ADP is critical for Hsp90 function. ATP hydrolysis is not necessary for this exchange but provides an important control point in the cycle responsive to regulation by co-chaperones.</jats:p

    Safe reinforcement learning under temporal logic with reward design and quantum action selection

    AbstractThis paper proposes an advanced Reinforcement Learning (RL) method, incorporating reward-shaping, safety value functions, and a quantum action selection algorithm. The method is model-free and can synthesize a finite policy that maximizes the probability of satisfying a complex task. Although RL is a promising approach, it suffers from unsafe traps and sparse rewards and becomes impractical when applied to real-world problems. To improve safety during training, we introduce a concept of safety values, which results in a model-based adaptive scenario due to online updates of transition probabilities. On the other hand, a high-level complex task is usually formulated via formal languages, including Linear Temporal Logic (LTL). Another novelty of this work is using an Embedded Limit-Deterministic Generalized B√ºchi Automaton (E-LDGBA) to represent an LTL formula. The obtained deterministic policy can generalize the tasks over infinite and finite horizons. We design an automaton-based reward, and the theoretical analysis shows that an agent can accomplish task specifications with the maximum probability by following the optimal policy. Furthermore, a reward shaping process is developed to avoid sparse rewards and enforce the RL convergence while keeping the optimal policies invariant. In addition, inspired by quantum computing, we propose a quantum action selection algorithm to replace the existing ε\varepsilon Œµ -greedy algorithm for the balance of exploration and exploitation during learning. Simulations demonstrate how the proposed framework can achieve good performance by dramatically reducing the times to visit unsafe states while converging optimal policies.</jats:p

    Research on Dynamic Response of Cold Rolling Mill with Dynamic Stiffness Compensation

    The vibration of the vertical system of a cold rolling mill is a major concern for factory production. In factory production, it is found that the thickness control system with dynamic stiffness compensation of the rolling mill has a significant impact on the rolling mill vibration. In this work, a mechanical hydraulic coupling vibration model of a cold rolling mill with a thickness control system with dynamic stiffness compensation was established. MATLAB/Simulink was used to simulate and analyze the vibration response characteristics of the mechanical structure of the rolling mill and mechanical hydraulic coupling system considering the dynamic stiffness compensation control mode and position control mode of the upper cylinder. We found that the control system changed the vibration response of the mechanical structure, and different control modes have different effects on the vibration response curve. When the rolling mill works in the vibration area, the thickness difference at the strip steel outlet would be larger. Considering the rolling mill vibration and strip surface quality, the excitation of the strip inlet thickness can be achieved by adjusting the dynamic stiffness compensation system and changing the rolling speed reasonably to achieve good vibration suppression and control effects.</jats:p
