Romantic elements in certain early American prose fiction writers.

Romanticism seems to be one of the most misused terms in the annals of literary criticism. It may be derogatory or a term of approval, depending upon the critic and the period in literary history. Any attempt of mine to define Romanticism and to come to a definite conclusion concerning its elements will be colored by my predisposition concerning it. Romanticism does not describe particular literatures nor denominate particular periods in literary history; yet there are literatures in which the romantic qualities and tendencies are predominant and periods which have led to an interpretation of the romantic movement. Romanticism, as a term in criticism, did not come full-fledged into the literary world. It was the result of the development of definite movements in France and Germany, influencing unconsciously or subconsciously the English writers. The French Romanticists, -- and the French are always expressive revolutionaries, -- definitely lead by Victor Hugo, applied Rousseauism and Liberalism to their writings. The German School is characterized by the application of Kantian philosophy to aesthetics by Schlegel and Shhiller. Both schools, however, were stimulated and influenced by the wave of individualism which washed over all Europe, beginning with the Renaissance

The Russians call these "bilini" or "tales of olden times." They were sung all over the country by wandering minstrels, consequently, were known by every class of persons of Russia. In the nineteenth century these were collected and divided into cycles. Within recent times, many editors and publishers have busied themselves over these collections extending far back into the Middle Ages

Indeed, she has not always been the awful, pitiable, half-woman, half-divinity that the great dramatists and the great artists have painted for us
