    Prerequisite for COVID-19 prediction : a review on factors affecting the infection rate

    Since the year 2020, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has emerged as the dominant topic of discussion in the public and research domains. Intensive research has been carried out on several aspects of COVID-19, including vaccines, its transmission mechanism, detection of COVID-19 infection, and its infection rate and factors. The awareness of the public related to the COVID-19 infection factors enables the public to adhere to the standard operating procedures, while a full elucidation on the correlation of different factors to the infection rate facilitates effective measures to minimize the risk of COVID-19 infection by policy makers and enforcers. Hence, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive and analytical review of different factors affecting the COVID-19 infection rate. Furthermore, this review analyses factors which directly and indirectly affect the COVID-19 infection risk, such as physical distance, ventilation, face masks, meteorological factor, socioeconomic factor, vaccination, host factor, SARS-CoV-2 variants, and the availability of COVID-19 testing. Critical analysis was performed for the different factors by providing quantitative and qualitative studies. Lastly, the challenges of correlating each infection risk factor to the predicted risk of COVID-19 infection are discussed, and recommendations for further research works and interventions are outlined

    Artificial intelligence framework for threat assessment and containment for covid-19 and future epidemics while mitigating the socioeconomic impact to women, children, and underprivileged groups

    With the emergency situation that arises with COVID-19, the intense containment strategies adopted by many countries had little or no consideration towards socio-economic ramifications or the impact on women, children, socioeconomically underprivileged groups. The existence of many adverse impacts raises questions on the approaches taken and demands proper analysis, scrutiny and review of the policies. Therefore, a framework was developed using the artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to detect, model, and predict the behaviour of the COVID-19 pandemic containment strategies, understanding the socio-economic impact of these strategies on identified diverse vulnerable groups, and the development of AI-based solutions, to predict and manage a future spread of COVID or similar infectious disease outbreaks while mitigating the social and economic toil. Based on generated behaviour and movements, AI tools were developed to conduct contact tracing and socio-economic impact mitigation actions in a more informed, socially conscious and responsible manner in the case of the next wave of COVID-19 infections or a different future infectious disease.Swedish International Development Cooperation Agenc

    Impact of misinformation and disinformation on the use of research evidence in Africa : disinfodemic and policy in an African context

    The results of this research revealed various cases, actors, origin, impact, and mitigation strategies of mis/ disinformation on the use of research evidence. The COVID-19 global pandemic has revealed the danger of mis/ disinformation with numbers of reported studies from west and central Africa demonstrating significant negative impact on evidence informed policymaking and women’s empowerment. “Evidence hesitancy” can be seen in policy makers, practitioners, and citizens alike. In this study, the underlying reasons for evidence hesitancy are analyzed: mis/disinformation; crises; culture; religion; social media. The study identified strengthening policy makers and researcher’s relationships as a way of institutionalizing research evidence for Evidence-Informed Decision Making (EIDM and EIPM, evidence-based policy-making)

    Results of the study show there are seven intersecting factors that influence access to vaccination: gender, ethnicity, geographic location, age, physical ability, marital status, and access to education. The socio-ecological model (SEM) highlights vast inequalities within the current system. Access to vaccines and information about animal health was the most limited among women, widows, the elderly, the disabled, those geographically isolated, and others with pre-existing unfavorable knowledge regarding vaccination practices. Cultural norms of communities were also important factors determining access to peste des petits ruminants (PPR) vaccines. Women remain burdened with household chores, along with gender-based violence and discriminatory beliefs and practices

    Black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) and its larvae (BSFL), possess unique attributes such as high crude protein of at least 46%, low carbon footprint, contribution to a circular economy model and low initial investment costs. Feed millers will spend less financial resources to formulate feed that integrates insect meal as protein source. The cost of formulation decreases with increasing levels of BSFL. Compared to the other diets, 25% BSFL inclusion rate provides the farmer with gross margins (GM) that are greater than the total variable costs (TVC)

    Towards a community of practice : a way to improve research, advocacy and policy in healthy food systems in Latin America and the Caribbean (final report CIAPEC-INTA team)

    The current project had the objective of creating a community of practice to strengthen research and advocacy tools and regional capacities, enhance collaboration across the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region. We report in specific of the sub-objective of creating the Front-of-Package labelling hub as the first experience to organize priority lines of the community. We have +50 participants of the hub from several countries and professions and conducted 4 meetings over 10 months. Using a participatory approach, we were able to develop norms and objectives of the hub, discuss and participate in relevant regional discussions on the topic, including a research conference, seminars, and technical meetings; we created research and advocacy tools, and we are in the process of generating a with a multi-country data set on food composition. The work of the hub involved students and as a hub we actively participated in activities of capacity building such as the Leadership Program in Nutrition. We believe this experience builds the foundations for creating new hubs in the community of practice in the next years and shows that it is possible to establish inter-country and multi-actor knowledge hubs to work together with advocates on critical topics for promoting food systems transformation in the region

    Institutional Canopy of Conservation (I-CAN): Governance and Environmentality in East Africa addresses the challenge of combining protection of biodiversity with strengthened livelihoods, whether through recognizing local rights over resources, livelihood diversification, or stimulation of a new green, post oil economy, including tourism. The major goal of I-CAN is to identify the most effective designs for future Community-Based Conservation programs by examining the impacts of ongoing conservancy experiments on community livelihoods and members’ attitudes and practices towards natural resources.     This “dispositive” analysis explores the sites where production of machine learning (ML) data is outsourced. It comprises examination of 210 data-work instruction documents, 55 interviews with data workers, managers, and requesters, and participant observation. Findings show that specific discourses encoded in task instructions reproduce and normalize the worldviews of requesters. Precarious working conditions and economic dependency alienates workers, making them obedient to instructions. Outsourced workers are paid as low as a few cents per task, usually lack social protection traditionally tied with employment relations, and are subject to systems of control and surveillance.
