Get PDFIn the context of the rapid nutrition transition experienced by middle-income countries of the Arab region, children and adolescent’s food choices and dietary behaviors are early risk factors for the development of non-communicable diseases. Assessment of factors influencing food choices among this age group is challenging and is usually based on self-reported data, which are prone to information and recall bias. As the popularity of technologies and video gaming platforms increases, opportunities arise to use these tools to collect data on variables that affect food choice, dietary intake, and associated outcomes. This protocol paper describes the SCALE study (School and community drivers of child diets in Arab cities; identifying levers for intervention) which aims to explore the environments at the level of households, schools and communities in which children’s food choices are made and consequently identify barriers and enablers to healthy food choices within these environments
Supporting young and female entrepreneurs for SME growth in Uganda and Somalia
Get PDFThis project was designed to analyze services offered by two innovation support agencies: Microfinance Support Centre in Uganda and Shaqodoon in Somalia. The study sought to situate the two by identifying their support for SMEs in their countries. How they contribute towards supporting young female entrepreneurs in their entrepreneurship journey. More especially starting and sustaining small enterprises, and how their support advance equity, diversity, and inclusiveness (EDI) within the SME sector. The study also sought to examine the broader ecosystem of SME support promotion in both countries and assess the state of knowledge on the design and impact of the innovation programs
Gender and digital access gaps and barriers in Asia : but what about after Access?
Get PDFThis paper explores the gender gaps in digital access and the underlying reasons for those gaps in the global South. It shows that over time some progress in closing those gaps in certain parts of South Asia, however it then goes on to argue that getting women simply connected is not the end goal. By examining the cases of India and Sri Lanka, the paper then identifies two key barriers to women’s meaningful access, specifically knowledge/awareness and digital skills barriers. The evidence shows that in these countries, the levels of digital skills and awareness of digital opportunities (such as online freelancing, using platforms to sell goods/services) are particularly low. The paper argues that in order to be digitally empowered, women need to firstly be aware of the possibilities of being online and have the necessary skills to enrich that experience
Better measurement and monitoring of data for development
Get PDFThe performance indexes and assessment tools included in this analysis were selected by Open Data Watch after a review of possible candidates and consultations with other index or tool producers. To ensure their relevance and comparability to the GDB, only indexes and tools applicable to government data in multiple sectors were included. Assessment tools that are currently in use and performance indexes that have at least one edition available since 2019 were included in the research inventory. Seven performance indexes provide cross-country comparisons using a numeric score, while five assessment tools enable countries or organizations to conduct assessments of government data and statistical systems based on qualitative and quantitative measures. Program evaluation of a dietary sodium reduction research consortium of five low- and middle-income countries in Latin America
Get PDFExcess dietary sodium is a global public health priority, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where rates of hypertension and cardiovascular disease are high. The International Development Research Centre funded a research consortium of five Latin American countries (LAC) to inform public health policy for dietary sodium reduction (2016-2020). The objective of this study was to determine the outcomes of this funding on short-term (e.g., research, capacity building) and intermediary outcomes (e.g., policies). A summative program evaluation was conducted, using a logic model and multiple data sources including document review, surveys, and interviews. Researchers from Argentina, Costa Rica, Brazil, Peru, and Paraguay produced a significant amount of scientific evidence to guide decision making on sodium policy related to its content in foods, consumer behaviors (social marketing), and the health and economic benefits of dietary reduction. A substantive number of knowledge translation products were produced. The funding enabled training opportunities for researchers who developed skills that can be scaled-up to other critical nutrients and health issues. It was unexpected that intermediary policy changes would occur, however several countries demonstrated early policy improvements derived from this research.
