Get PDFThe paper describes several initiatives from the programme for Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA). Innovations stemmed from project design, strategies for community engagement, and policy makers’ involvement early in the project. Over 500 health workers, researchers, and policymakers across the country were trained on various topics: Universal Home Visits, communication, perinatal depression, adolescent parenting, group psychotherapy, gender-based violence, use of tablets for data collection, implementation research, social media skills, and knowledge translation. Collaborations were developed with policymakers, non-governmental organizations and other researchers working in the field

Studying up machine learning data : why talk about bias when we mean power?
Get PDFReducing societal problems to “bias” misses the context-based nature of data. The paper proposes moving research focus beyond bias-oriented framing in Machine Learning (ML) by adopting a power-aware perspective. This means accounting for historical inequities, labor conditions, and epistemological standpoints inscribed in data. Corporate forces and market imperatives are involved in the labor of data workers, and these conditions shape ML datasets. In the past decade, injustice and harm produced by data-driven systems have often been addressed under the umbrella term “bias.” A power-aware perspective will include critical ML-related fields of inquiry: data quality, data work, and data documentation

Get PDFReviews of COVID-19-related research in high-income countries show that the more a country is hit by the pandemic, the more effort it devotes to research. This report contributes to existing knowledge by providing case studies about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on two West African universities where COVID-19 has exacerbated the existing scarcity and inequality in resource distribution. More specifically, for most researchers at the Universite Felix Houphouet-Boigny (UFHB, Cote d’Ivoire) and the University of Cape Coast (UCC, Ghana), 58% and 61% respectively, COVID-19 has caused a decrease in research funding, which is derived largely from private sources

Strengthening school leadership towards improving school resiliency
Get PDF“Strengthening School Leadership Toward Improving School Resiliency” was a two-year interdisciplinary multi-country development research project exploring how the quality of school leadership could be strengthened as a means of improving education quality in under-resourced environments. The primary objective of the project was to understand whether use of a specific continuous improvement approach, Improvement Science (IS), supports sustainable change in the practices of school leaders. School leaders are acknowledged to have a critical role in improving the quality of teaching and learning within schools. Continuous improvement methods such as IS offer a set of ideas, tools and practices which empower practitioners such as school leaders to take an active role in improvement, crafting a narrative which explains the improvement initiative and helping to remove obstacles and blockages in the improvement initiative, and other actions which move the institution towards its goals
