Reducing heat impacts in Rajshahi city, Bangladesh

    No full text
More intense and frequent heatwaves are now being experienced worldwide due to the impacts of climate change. South Asia is a region that has faced several heatwaves in past years, including heatwave in 2015, the fifth deadliest in recorded history which caused the deaths of approximately 3,500 people. A study published by AGU indicates that even if we limit global warming at 1.5 °C, it is likely that heatwaves will become increasingly common in the South Asia region.Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherland

Data privacy in Africa’s ed-tech platforms : children’s right to privacy

    Get PDF
In the past decade, there has been a significant increase in the use of educational technology (Edtech) platforms on the African continent. A number of these platforms utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) and have revolutionized the global education sector. When a website or platform is intended for children, it must comply with national data protection laws, which are intended to safeguard children's personal information in the digital space. While there are valuable opportunities to use AI in ways that benefit children, there are crucial questions we must ask and answer in order to better safeguard children from the potential negative effects of AI

French version available in IDRC Digital Library: Modalités de financement pour le renforcement organisationnel dans la recherche pour le développementFunding modalities that enable organizational strengthening typically include core funding, flexible research grants and strategic organizational development (OD) support programs. These modalities have demonstrated contributions to higher-quality research, better positioning for use, networking and partnerships, while facilitating internal learning processes. This policy brief covers how to fund for organizational strengthening. Feedback from two IDRC evaluations suggested for instance, that tailored support from program officers emerged as a more important factor for effectiveness than the provision of support for any specific length of time

Using outcome mapping to mobilize critical stakeholders for gender responsive Rift Valley fever and newcastle disease vaccine value chain in Rwanda

Women farmers find little support for the small livestock they manage due to official preference for cattle production. The study aimed to identify opportunities for women’s engagement in the livestock vaccine value chain (LVVC) and to reduce barriers to vaccines. Outcome Mapping, and the Gender Equality Continuum Tool were used to classify and engage critical partners. Enhanced positioning and visibility of women can occur through recognition of the roles that women play and systemic engagement of all stakeholders. Poverty among livestock keepers is particularly high in sub-Saharan Africa. It is estimated that more than 85 percent live in extreme poverty, where two-thirds of producers are women.Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF)Global Affairs Canada (GAC

Global partnership for education knowledge and innovation exchange (KIX) annual report 2021-2022 : mobilizing innovation to strengthen teacher professional development

    Get PDF
This third annual report on the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (KIX) highlights progress towards its key objectives. KIX contributions in each of these areas were captured in an independent mid-term evaluation conducted this year, which confirmed KIX is on track, and proving valuable to the education partners it was designed to serve. This report draws on emerging findings and profiles examples related to teacher professional development — one of six broad themes that have emerged as key priorities for GPE partner countries, and which proved vital in education responses to COVID-19 — to demonstrate how KIX supported research and regional hubs work together towards our key outcomes.Global Partnership for Education (GPE

Community paralegal manual : monitoring and protecting the legal rights of women and girls and improving their access to jutice

    Get PDF
This module is designed to train community workers as paralegals to aid and assist survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) to recognize themselves as right-holders and access appropriate response services to mitigate and recover from the harm suffered by them. Unlike conventional paralegals, the principal role of community paralegals is not to assist lawyers, but rather to work directly with the communities they serve and act as knowledge banks navigating help seekers to vital response services. As community workers possess a deep understanding of the social issues and everyday challenges faced by women and girls in their community, they are uniquely positioned to promote empowerment by fostering legal awareness in the community and creating linkages with relevant services

Senegal training of trainers : a facilitation manual for animal health worker trainers working with the livestock vaccine value chain focused on gendered intersectional transformative approaches (GITA)

The University of Florida’s (LIVT) project intends to conduct multi-levels of training. The first training is geared towards professional veterinary staff, in a training of trainers (TOT) mode, to prepare them to include Gendered intersectional transformative approach (GITA) in the trainings they provide to community animal health workers (CAHWs). The project will work with the trainers to supplement the existing CAHW curriculum with GITA and other soft skills. The five training resource manuals developed by the LIVT project are to be used in tandem with this TOT facilitation manual to derive lesson plans and content.Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF)Global Affairs Canada (GAC

Veterinary vaccine fellowships for female post-docs in developing countries

    Get PDF
Women continue to be underrepresented in science, particularly in low-and-middle income countries (LMICs). As part of efforts to address this challenge, the project team designed a fellowship programme specifically for women working in veterinary vaccinology in LMICs. The programme funded fellowship awards of up to £50,000 per fellowship to support the professional development of women in LMICs by enabling them to work with senior local and international mentors on a defined piece of research. The research problem is still relevant after this project has ended and this project highlighted the continued need to support women in science, particularly in LMICs, and illustrates the incredible amount that can be achieved with relatively small amounts of research funding, short research projects and great mentorship
