Overcoming budget, availability and attention constraints to healthy diets in Tanzania : interim report
This report presents progress for the 4th block of six months (October 2022 to April 2023) for IDRC funded project at ESRF on healthy diets. This study is being implemented as part of IDRC’s investment in increasing market competitiveness of healthy diets in East Africa region. The study aims at testing interventions on the impacts of increasing availability, affordability, and nudging food consumers on the consumption of healthy foods. The study therefore has three major components namely (a) scoping study on situation of food environment and its role in influencing dietary choices (b) Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) and (c) Randomized Control Trial to test the impact of food subsidies of the consumption of health diets. To a large extent, the report presents updates in relation to the execution of planned activities for the period. These activities are (1) further analysis of data collected from earlier research phases, (2) preparation of research design for RCT, (3) preparation of framework for costing exercise for RCT and (4) dissemination of research findings from earlier phases of the study

Comparative study of policy responses to COVID-19 in LICs in Africa
This brief assesses the policy responses to COVID-19 among low-income countries (LICs) in Africa. While LICs have adopted expansionary fiscal and monetary policies in the face of economic lockdown, as well as other mitigation strategies, the scale and quality of such responses have been modest compared with those of emerging and middle-income countries. Policy instruments have also varied across countries, in line with the level of development of domestic financial markets and the extent of digital inclusion. Pre-pandemic economic challenges, such as limited fiscal space, high debt levels and inflation, have also contributed to countries’ weak economic responses. External financing has been crucial for LICs’ ability to respond to the pandemic, but is still inadequate given the huge financial gap that exists. As LICs move from the relief to the recovery phase of COVID-19 economic management, a rethinking of economic responses is crucial both to bring about a swift recovery and to minimize the catastrophic impact of COVID-19 on recent developmental gains
Data management plan
This is IDRC’s data management plan (DMP) template which outlines the strategies and procedures for handling project data throughout its lifecycle. It provides a structured approach to manage data generated during the project, ensuring its quality, security, accessibility, and long-term preservation. It addresses data collection, organization, documentation, storage, backup, sharing, and retention. It also addresses data ownership, intellectual property rights, data privacy, and ethical considerations
Research project to combat gender-based hate speech against women in Brazil and India : final report
This is the final report of the “#Recognize-Resist-Remedy” project, a collaborative research endeavor between InternetLab and IT for Change. The project was initiated in 2019 with the objective of examining the manifestations of hate speech against women in online spaces. Over the course of four years (2019-2023), the project evolved and adapted to an extremely shifting social and political context, leading to the emergence of new inquiries and the adoption of methodologies that went beyond the original plan. This report refers to InternetLab’s part of the project
Case for development of minimum gender responsive curriculum development standards for Zimbabwe’s higher education institutions (HEIs)
The quality of teaching across all levels of education has a significant impact on academic access, retention and performance of male and female students and is essential to achieving sustainable development. The quality of teaching includes an investment in developing standard guidelines as well as lecturer training and support. A three-year long study of Zimbabwean Universities with an in-depth case study of Women’s University in Africa established that there are no Minimum Gender Responsive Curriculum Development Standards and yet lecturers in Universities in Zimbabwe do not all undergo a structured training programme on pedagogy. Given the need for accelerated efforts not only for women and girls’ access, but also their retention and progression through University education, there is renewed interest in addressing systemic issues affecting retention and progression, through investments in quality teaching and learning. This policy brief therefore seeks to contribute to greater fulfilling learning experiences and educational impacts for male and female University students through proposing gender responsive pedagogy in all Universities in Zimbabwe
Developing small wind turbines with local women for domestic use in Mauritius
The energy transition to renewable sources, along with energy efficiency and management, are areas where women should be engaged actively. This research project aims to design and develop a prototype in the form of a computational model for a system using a vertical-axis wind turbine which can later be scaled-up for domestic use in Mauritius and other small islands. The key research question is to determine how the integration of Gendered Design in the context of small-island economies, with the case of Mauritius in particular, can be achieved using numerical simulations and optimization techniques for the latter application. As such, the efficiency and performance of a small-scale Savonius vertical-axis wind turbine under various wind speeds typical of the Mauritian environment has been numerically investigated
