Tiger moths are attracted to pyrrolizidine-producing plants (eg. Heliotropiaceae), since they use these compounds in pheromones. The need for this compound makes the dried plants of some borage plants an efficient collection method. This study evaluated the richness of Arctiini with preference of Heliotropiumsp. at the José Álvarez Alonso Biological Station during the months of January, February and March 2014. Twenty-one sampling points were established, 14 points in tropical forest and 7 in varillales. 16 Arctiini species were collected (39 specimens), distributed in the Arctiina, Ctenuchina and Euchromina subtribes. The white-sand forest showed a greater number of species in relation to the tropical forests. There is probably a preference for the leaves of Heliotropium sp. All the registered species are new records for the José Álvarez Alonso Biological Station, of which seven have been exclusively registered in the white-sand forest. Additionally, a basis for future work has been generated, since with certainty, these forests host a greater number of species and that could be recorded with greater sampling effort and other collection methods. The presented list of the Arctiini fauna could serve as a support for the conservation of these forests

The objective of this work was to determine the effect of different doses of the rooting agent Root-Hor® in the multiplication of suckers of the Harton clone (bellaco plantain) under thermal chamber conditions in the province of Padre Abad, Aguaytía, Peru. A thermal chamber 3m wide x 5m long and 1.8m high was built and lined with transparent plastic. In the rooting beds, compost was used as a base to form a layer 10cm deep, followed by phosphate rock sprinkled all over the bed and finally a 40cm layer of sawdust was added.Corms of healthy mother plants with an average weight of 2kg were selected, from which the central growth point was eliminated by making a cone cut 4cm deep in each corm. These were disinfected with a solution of 5% sodium hypochlorite for 3 minutes and then treated with the Root-Hor® rooting agent according to the doses studied (0ml/100L, 50ml/100L, 100ml/100L, 150ml/100L and 200ml/100L). Finally, they were placed in the rooting beds inside the thermal chamber, showing that the application of 150ml/100L of Root-Hor® achieved 8.2 suckers/corm, 330.4 g of weight/suckling, 118.2 cm of sucker height, 4 cm diameter of sucker, 20.4 roots/sucker and 25cm of root length, surpassing the other applications of Root-Hor® and the control, showing efficiency in the vegetative propagation of the Harton clone under thermal chamber conditions.

The use of soil to implement several management systems, such as agriculture, livestock farming and agroforestry activities contribute to the depletion of the soil and the forest, reducing or increasing the levels of soil chemical attributes, such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus and increase or decrease of active (pH) or exchangeable (Aluminum) acidity. This study aimed to evaluate macronutrients (calcium - Ca2+, magnesium - Mg2+, potassium - K+ and phosphorus - P), as well as aluminum - Al3+ and soil pH, under use systems: agroforestry system - SAFs and pasture - PA, comparing them to Primary Forest - PF, in the Rosenthal community in Itacoatiara-AM, Brazil. The soils were sampled in layers 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm deep, with samples composed of six single samples each. The distribution of nutrient contents (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ , and P) considering the 0-10 and 10-20 cm layers showed little variation, except for phosphorus, which obtained the highest concentration in the prospected layers. The distribution of calcium, magnesium, and potassium nutrients in the sampled soil layers decreased with depth. However, an inverse pattern was observed in the elevation of active soil acidity and aluminium levels. Soil macronutrients showed medium to high concentrations, with forest and SAFs as systems that preserve good levels of fertility.

We present the preliminary results of the initial growth of capirona Calycophyllum spruceanum from a broadcast seed sowing in which the seeds were first mixed together with white sand and manually spread over an area of 40m2. After germination, biometric measurements were recorded every three months for selected individuals. In 18 months of evaluation, an average height of 3.75m (±0.65) and stem diameter of 3.44cm (±1.46) were reached. This experiment sought to verify the efficacy of the broadcast seed sowing for capirona, a highly valuable timber forest species, which today is at risk of disappearance due to the fact that its natural populations are being affected by overexploitation. The growth figures obtained were satisfactory, which shows that this sowing method is viable in becoming a new propagation alternative for the species

We report the plants used to combat the COVID-19 pandemic in a community of the Urarina indigenous people, in Loreto, Peru. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with health promoters, wise men, leaders and teachers of the community during the first and second waves of the pandemic, from May 2020 to June 2021. It was not possible to make trips to the community during the first wave of infections, so the interviews were carried out by telephone or through messaging applications such as WhatsApp or Messenger. During the second wave, field work was carried out, complementing the information with direct interviews with community residents and focus groups about the use of the plants. The plants used were collected from the places identified in the interviews and in the different focus groups. 16 plant species used specifically in the pandemic were identified. Four of them were introduced in America from the 16th century and are commonly used in an integrated way with species that are traditionally used in the community. Four species were also identified that have been used to strengthen the body and spirit against the COVID-19 disease

MORTALIDAD DE BANDA NEGRA Myloplus Schomburgkii DEBIDO A LA POBRE CALIDAD DEL AGUA ASOCIADA CON LA SOBREPOBLACIÓN DE LENTEJAS DE AGUA EN UN ESTANQUE DE CRIANZA EN LA AMAZONÍA PERUANA

Ponds covered with duckweeds release nutrients rapidly, causing problems of eutrophication of the water which can reduce water clarity and quality, creating a hypoxic or anoxic ‘dead zone' lacking sufficient oxygen to support most organisms. In the present study, the sudden mortality of black-band myleus Myloplus schomburgkii Jardine, 1841 drove the investigate of factors that caused the death of the specimens registered in a fish pond in the Peruvian Amazon. After the tallying of dead fish, it was revealed that sixty individuals (75% of the total population) of M. schomburgkii had died. The taxonomic identification of the aquatic plant revealed the presence of “duckweeds” locally named in Peru as “lenteja de agua” Lemna minor distributed throughout the pond. Physical and chemical water parameters revealed low levels of oxygen, acid water, and high levels of nitrate and phosphate. Since duckweeds cannot be completely eliminated from waters that are conducive to its growth and require periodic harvesting to prevent matting, proper management strategies therefore become critical to guarantee good quality of water in the pond and avoid black-band myleus deaths due to imbalances in physical and chemical parameters.

The aim of this study was to evaluate a protocol for induced reproduction of Calophysus macropterus (Lichtenstein, 1819) in the Peruvian Amazon. Three females with maturing oocytes and three males that presented seminal fluid expulsion under light abdominal pressure were selected. The hormone inducer used was Carp Pituitary Extract (CPE) dissolved in physiological saline (0.9%), for females at 5.5 mg/kg and for males at 1 mg/kg, applied in two doses every 12 hours. Spawning was performed by stripping the abdomen of the females, the eggs were collected dry and immediately fertilized with the semen of the males. Incubation was carried out in 60 L capacity Woynarovich type cylindrical conical upflow incubators. The results showed spawning of two females at 168,16 and 187,5 degree-hours (27,3 and 27.5 °C), with post hormone induction latency time of 6,16 and 6,82 hours. Hatching of larvae was only achieved from the first female, which occurred at 15,3 h post-incubation (28,2 °C) with a total of 300 larvae, however at 3 days there was mortality of all individuals. The preliminary results of this study provide knowledge on the induced reproduction of C. macropterus as a basis for the production of this species in aquaculture systems in the Peruvian Amazon.
