COVID-19 hit the Amazonian indigenous communities of Peru for two consecutive years, forcing them to recover traditional knowledge, practices and strategies to combat it. We present the plant and animal species used by two Ticuna communities in the Peruvian Amazon during the COVID-19 pandemic, describing the preparation and administration of the preparations. The information was obtained from semi-structured interviews with men and women from the communities during the first two waves of the pandemic, from May 2020 to June 2021. The interviews were face-to-face, in the field work carried out in the communities, and virtual, using the telephone and messaging applications available in the communities or in the nearby major population centers. During the field work in Nueva Galilea, visits were made to the collection points of the plant species. Fourteen plant species and three animal species used in the pandemic were identified. The most used parts of the plant species, in order of importance, were the leaves, roots, bulbs and fruits, making preparations in the form of infusions, fresh, in baths and in steam inhalations. It is evident how traditional knowledge in the use of plants and animals that heal, in an integrated manner with the appropriation of external knowledge, is still valid in the Ticuna communities. Knowledge about the healing properties of fourteen plant species and three identified animal species has made it possible to combat the symptoms of a very aggressive disease.

Despite its importance in the local economy and food supply, the fishing carried out by riverside communities has been little studied. This paper presents the main characteristics of fishing in Lake Aripari based on the analysis of fish landing records. Between April 2018 and February 2019, species' richness and composition, landed biomass, catch per unit effort (CPUE) by hydrological periods, and the nutritional contribution of species destined for human consumption were evaluated. Forty-seven species were recorded, grouped into 23 families and 9 orders, with the Pimelodidae family being the most diverse (6 species). Species' richness was higher during the dry season, dominated by species of local migration and piscivorous habits. The total landings amounted to 10 650.7 kg, where 14 species accounted for 85.0% of the biomass. Sixty-seven percent of the biomass was for sale, with more than 57% being landed in crescent. The mean annual CPUE was 0.30 kg/hp (SD = 0.18), with the lowest catches in the crescent season (KW, p-value < 0.05). The oxbow lakes were the aquatic environments with the highest CPUE (KW, p-value < 0.05). Boquichico and llambina stand out for their contribution in protein, phosphorus, iron, potassium, and omega-3. The results show that fishing in Lake Aripari is carried out on a small scale in different aquatic environments where a diverse group of fish are caught with different fishing materials, making this an important and deeply rooted activity in the community.

The rapid urban and agricultural expansion cause severe impacts on soil water infiltration capacity, but these effects have not yet been sufficiently investigated, especially in the Peruvian Amazon. The study aimed to analyze the variations in speed and soil infiltration in two vegetation cover types (primary intervened forest and pasture) in the Peruvian Amazon. The infiltration rate of the soil was measured using the single ring infiltrometer; three samples were collected in the pasture and six in the primary forest. With the values obtained, the infiltration curves were constructed. To evaluate differences in infiltration capacity between cover vegetation types, we used the t‑Student test. Our results show that the infiltration capacity in the primary forest was greater than in the pasture (p ≤ 0,01, t‑Student test). Regarding the physicochemical characteristics of the soil, we found no significant differences between the two types of cover studied. The abundance, species richness, and vegetation diversity were positively associated with the infiltration capacity (p ≤ 0,05). We conclude that the soil water infiltration capacity in primary intervened forest is higher than in pastures. This would have significant impacts on the hydrological behavior of the tropical ecosystems due to the transformation of forests into pastures generated by anthropogenic activities. the two types of cover studied. The abundance, species richness, and vegetation diversity were positively associated with infiltration (P ≤ 0.05). We conclude that the soil water infiltration rate in primary forests is higher than in pastures.

Chiasmocleis magnova was described with only two female individuals from the Allpahuayo Mishana National Reserve and surroundings in the Loreto region, Peru. The presence of large eggs in the holotype led the descriptors to assume that this species reproduces with direct development. After the description, records emerged to the north and south of the Amazon River; however, these records lacked photographs and most also lacked population information. This motivated us to learn more about their reproduction, distribution, and abundance by habitats. To this end, we captured and placed a pair of C. magnova in an aquaterrarium to assess their eggs and tadpoles. In parallel, we assessed bromeliads in transects in search of reproductive pairs to evaluate their oviposition. We recorded visual encounters for 460 hours in white sand forests, low hill, middle, and low terrace forests in order to estimate its abundance, and these records served as knowledge of their distribution in Loreto. Our results indicate that this species lays its eggs in bromeliads, from where small tadpoles emerge with dorsolateral eyes, a white body, and dorsal chromatophores. C. magnova is distributed in the interfluvium of the Tigre and Napo rivers, and the highest records were in the semi-deciduous azonal forest of hills of the western Amazon, which are characterized by successive and pronounced hills. This species can be found in four types of forests: on white sand, low hill, middle terrace, and low terrace forests, but it is more abundant in white sand forests. In summary, C. magnova is a species of microhylid restricted to the Tigre-Napo interfluviumwith larval development in bromeliads and greater abundance in white sand forests.

The camu camu (Myrciaria dubia) is possibly the most important amazonian fruit for its nutraceutical potential, with an ascorbic acid content higher than that of citrus in about 20 times. To evaluate the efficiency of grafting by terminal scion, buds rods were collected from 43 plants selected for high fruit yield, coming from Loreto, Peruvian Amazon, which were grafted onto rootstocks of Roraima, Brazil developed in the experimental nursery of the EMBRAPA, Boa Vista. 215 grafts were performed (five per each selected plant) grown in individual pots with sandy substrate fertilized with nutrient solution. Regarding the rootstocks had an average stem diameter of 8,07 mm in the grafting point located on average 23,22 cm from the neck of the plant. The scion had an average length of 7,30 cm, with 2,24 live shoots and 1,28 dead shoots. It was not found correlation between the percentage of graft on and the percentage of plants achieved (good conditions to be planted) with none of the independent variables. Regarding the evaluation of the terminal scion grafting method a high level of graft on was found (78,60%) that did not agree with the low level (20,54%) of plants achieved and suitable for transplantation to the field, which suggests to improve the technology related to the initial development of the grafts.

The taricaya, Podocnemis unifilis, is an aquatic turtle from the Amazon that hasbecome a flagship species at the national level and mainly in Madre de Dios. Despite this, it is subject to very high hunting pressure due to the use of its eggs for sale and self-consumption. In order to focus efforts that help its conservation, the population status of this species was studied in the Tahuamanu river, Madre de Dios. From July to September, by counting sunbathers, a total of 343 detections of 895 individuals were recorded, with a relative abundance of 1.11 ind./km traveled (SD = 0.65, SE = 0.15). In addition, a probability of beach use by the species of Ψ = 0.78 (SE = 0.06) was estimated (which represents 78% of occupation of the beaches of the Tahuamanu River), and additionally, its preference for large and sloping beaches. Finally, a total of 275 nests were recorded, being in the upper basin (near the Alto Purus National Park -PNAP) where the highest number of nests was observed. In conclusion, the taricaya uses the entire course of the Tahuamanu River, but the healthiest populations are found in the upper part, near the limits of the PNAP, and where management activities have contributed to the maintenance of P. unifilis populations.

Soil is the superficial part of the earth where plants grow, among them, species of economic importance that provide food, medicine and wood for local people, however, little has been studied about the influence of the soil on the plants in the Amazon Peruvian. Due to these reasons, the relationship between the physical-chemical characteristics of the soil and the diversity and structure in the forests in the area of the Iquitos-Nauta highway, Loreto, Peru, was evaluated. 102 pits for soil sampling and 37 plots of 50 x 20 m for vegetation study, were settled. Spearman's correlation index indicated that alpha diversity is negatively related to cation exchange capacity, potassium, phosphorus, and organic matter; and the structure (number of individuals) is negatively related to the amount of clay and pH. In conclusion, the alpha diversity and structure of the vegetation is determined by the physical-chemical characteristics of the soil
