    No full text
Chemical composition and antioxidant activity of three species of sacha inchi seeds (Plukenetia voluvilis, Plukenetia carolis-vegae and Plukenetia huayllabambana) were evaluated and compared. The analyzes of proximal composition, analysis of micro and macro nutrients, physicochemical properties and fatty acid composition of the oils, and the evaluation of the antioxidant activity using the methods of DPPH and ABTS were performed. The results showed a similarity between P. carolis-vegae and P. huayllabambana, these species had a high oil content (49.28 and 48.82%, respectively) compared to P. voluvilis (34.23%). The three species presented a similar fatty acid profile, with linolenic acid (omega-3) being the majority (48.32-58.71%). In the mineral content, potassium was the most predominant in P. carolis-vegae and P. huayllabambana (686.04 and 710.69 mg / 100g, respectively), unlike P. voluvilis which was calcium (237, 92 m / 100g). P. carolis-vegae was the species that presented the highest antioxidant activity (DPPH 2.30 µmol TE/g, ABTS 3.38 µmol TE/g) and correlated with its total phenolic content (3.85 mg AG / 100g). These results indicate that P. carolis-vegae could also be used by the food and pharmaceutical industry as P. voluvilis, because it presents better nutritional properties

The objective of the investigation was to determine the effect of different concentrations of Indolbutyric Acid (AIB) on the rooting of Annona muricata «Guanabana» cuttings in the sub-irrigation chamber, which was developed in the agroforestry vivarium of the Universidad Nacional Intercultural de la Amazonía (UNIA), located at km 0.63 of the San José de Tushmo road, Yarinacocha district, Coronel Portillo province, Ucayali region, Perú, between the months of August to October of 2017. Soursop cuttings were collected, cutting the twigs with pruning shears, with 10-12 cm in length, and a diameter of 0.5 cm, and then cutting half of the leaves with a scalpel. The cuttings were disinfected with fungicide, for 10 minutes and ventilated for 10 minutes, then they were introduced about 1 cm from their base, in a container containing the different AIB solutions, by 3 seconds, and with the help of a fan were dried for 1 minute, so that the alcohol evaporates and the hormone can be fixed, and then installed inside the subirrigation chamber according to the treatments studied (0 ppm of AIB, 1000 ppm of AIB, 2000 ppm of AIB and 3000 ppm of AIB); concluding that, for the number of roots, the control treatment (0 ppm of AIB) and the treatment with 2000 ppm AIB, presented the best averages (3.55 and 3.39 roots respectively), not finding significant differences between treatments for the length of roots, and for the percentage of rooted cuttings, the treatment with 1000 ppm of AIB, presented the best average (41%) and finally, for the percentage of survival, the treatment with 2000 ppm of AIB presented the best average (99.33 %).La investigación tuvo como objetivo, determinar el efecto de diferentes concentraciones de Ácido Indolbutírico (AIB) en el enraizamiento de estaquillas de Annona muricata «Guanábana» en cámara de subirrigación, el cual se desarrolló en el vivero agroforestal de la Universidad Nacional Intercultural de la Amazonía (UNIA), ubicada en el km 0,63 de la carretera San José de Tushmo, distrito de Yarinacocha, provincia de Coronel Portillo, región Ucayali, Perú, entre los meses de agosto a octubre del 2017.

ABOUT THE FUTURE OF AMAZONIAN COMMUNITIES: IN SEARCH OF THE LOST PARADISE

    No full text
For thousands of years, Indigenous people in the Amazon basin supported themselves with almost inexhaustible sources of protein, fat, and micronutrients from abundant natural resources found in forest ecosystems, above all, terrestrial and aquatic fauna. Now, after a century and a half of unsustainable exploitation to meet the demand of local, national and global markets, many natural resources have been extirpated from the most accessible forests or have become so scarce that they no longer represent a dependable and relevant food source, and as a consequence, indigenous people today are suffering from high rates of chronic childhood malnutrition and anemia. A growing number of young people leave their communities in search of better economic opportunities. The attempts to promote models of agricultural development from the outside have failed due to their low cultural relevance and other limiting factors, including poor soil fertility or drainage, high temperatures, rainfall, humidity and the proliferation of pests in both crops and animal husbandry. In addition, international commitments limit the spread of the agricultural frontier at the expense of Amazonian forests. Some well-organized communities have managed to reverse degradation of their natural capital and have recuperated vital forest resources for subsistence, thanks to the implementation of measures of control and adaptive management in accord with the culture and traditional ways of organization and production; moreover, they have been able to obtain significant income thanks to the harvest and processing of diverse wild resources, in response to growing market demand. “Bionegocios” or “Eco-Business” based on non-timber forest products is seen as an excellent opportunity for sustainable development that is inclusive and culturally relevant for Amazonian people, and for future young entrepreneurs an alternative more in line with a vision of the “complete life” currently advocated by the indigenous movement

QUALITY CONTROL OF PLANTATIONS TIMBER, AN ALTERNATIVE TO ENCOURAGE TREE GROWING OF TIMBER FOREST SPECIES, CASE STUDY OF Cedrelinga catenaeformis TORNILLO

    No full text
In the present study the optimal turn of use of the trees of "tornillo" plantations has been compared based on the annual average increments and the current annual increases in volume of 1349 trees, versus the results of the probable uses of the wood of plantations of the same species, based on the study of the physical, mechanical and workability properties of wood of different ages, located in the Jenaro Herrera Research Center - CIJH. The first study shows that the optimal turn of silvicultural use of "tornillo" occurs at the age of 13 years, when the wood of this still does not have sufficient maturity compared to wood from natural forests. Alternatively, the study of the physical, mechanical and workability properties, recommends the use of "tornillo" wood from the age of 15, considerably reducing the period of time for the log to reach maturity, which allows inferring that the "tornillo" wood can be used before the wood matures. This information was complemented with second-source studies on the economic benefits and carbon estimation of aerial "tornillo" biomass in plantations. This study aims to help encourage the cultivation of trees by making the case study of this species available to those interested and, on the other hand, recommendations are made to promote policies for the cultivation and use of wood from plantations

In the Amazon basin it is distributed the greatest diversity of freshwater fish in the world, but presents less than half of the species described and/or with little knowledge about its biology and distribution. This work presents the composition of the ichthyofauna Igarapé Praquiquara, located in the municipality of Castanhal, belonging to the Northeast Atlantic Hydrographic Region, Brazil, through collections were conducted in the years 2014 and 2015. A total number of 1,073 fish were sampled, belonging to five orders, 16 families, 35 genus and 42 species. Characiformes and Perciformes were the most predominant orders, Cichlidae and Characidae were the most abundant families, and Bryconops giacopinni, Cyphocharax gouldingi, Astyanax sp., Geophagus proximus and Satanoperca jurupari the most abundant species. Igarapé Praquiquara is composed of species with moderate commercial interest for commercial aquariums, with the presence of species cultivated in other regions. A structural analysis of the igarapé fish community is recommended in order to identify which factors are responsible for the composition of the ichthyofauna present, as well as the influence of the dam on the dispersion, distribution and reproduction of species.

The present study reports three cases of problems on farmed Arapaima gigas in the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon (1st case: Jaundice disease in farmed Arapaima gigas (Schinz, 1822) in Pará, Brazil; 2nd case: Gas bubble disease in farmed Arapaima gigas from the Peruvian amazon and 3rd case: Mortalities caused by fights between sexually mature females of Arapaima gigas. All cases were reported during field expeditions to fish farms. The first case was reported in Para, Brazil and describes a jaundice disease caused by the consumption of contaminated food by micotoxins. The second case was reported in Iquitos, Peru and describes a “gas bubble” disease on young A. gigas caused by inadequate management and lack of acclimation when translated from a fish pond to glass aquaria and wooden boxes with shallow water. The third case is reported in Manaus, Brazil and describes a storage experiment where it was demonstrated that breeding tanks with more than one female results in fights against females and consequently the death of some specimens.

The floodplain of the Amazon river offers considerable potential for agriculture but is a risk-filled environment for farmers working the fertile but flood-prone land. Flood reversals that occur as river levels fall and rise between May and November —known as repiquetes— pose a serious threat to crop cultivated on the floodplains, particularly commercial rice. In this paper we analyze the 45-year record of daily water levels at Iquitos to determine the frequency and magnitude of repiquetes and their impact on the crop growing season. Interviews and land surveys conducted in four riverside communities near the Isla Muyuy archipelago indicate the impact of repiquetes and other hazards on rice production, and assessed farmers’ willingness to pay for flood risk adaptation tools. Our findings point to index-based insurance as promising strategy to buffer risk and promote agricultural development of the Amazon floodplain.

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of three foods on the growth and survival of juveniles of arahuana Osteoglossum bicirrhosum. 81 specimens (6.5 ± 0.36 cm and 1.03 ± 0.03 g) were used and distributed in aquariums with 15 L of water at a density of 0.6 fish L-1. Three foods were used: commercial feed, chironomids Chironomus sp. and live specimens of Poecilia reticulata, with three replicas distributed in a completely randomized design (CRD) for 30 days. The results show that fish fed with chironomids and balanced feed obtained a significant performance (p <0.05) in weight, specific growth rate, relative growth rate and condition factor compared to juveniles fed live fish. However, no significant differences (p> 0.05) in total length and survival were found in the different feeding treatments. In conclusion, the use of chironomids and balanced food show a better performance in weight growth and condition factor in juveniles of arahuana O. bicirrhosum

EVALUATION OF THE GENETIC VARIABILITY OF SHIHUAHUACO Dipteryx ferrea (Ducke) Ducke IN THE PERUVIAN AMAZON, USING MICROSATELITES MARKERS

    No full text
We studied the genetic variability of Dipteryx ferrea shihuahuaco in seven natural populations from the Peruvian Amazon using nine microsatellite loci. The results showed a high genetic diversity shown by the high polymorphism (total alleles = 135, mean alleles per locus = 15 ± 6 alleles) and allelic richness (Macuya = 11 and Iñapari = 8, maximum and minimum allelic richness, respectively). The analysis of principal components showed a strong overlap among the populations, which added to the low values of interpopulation genetic distance (from 0.07 to 0.10), reveals a high genetic similarity among populations. The dendrogram based on the genetic distance of Shared Allele showed populations clustered in three main groups, the first formed by Manu and Iñapari populations (group A, bootstrap = 91%), the second by Contamana and Macuya (group B, 60%), and the third by Tamaya, Santa Clara e Inuya (group C, 100%). The correlation analysis showed that there is a positive correlation between geographic distance and genetic distance among pairs of populations (r = 0.62, p<0.005). The high genetic similarity among populations found in this species can be attributed to the allogamous reproduction system (cross-pollination) of Shihuahuaco, to its pollinators (bats, bees) and dispersers (macaws, eagles, peccaries, etc.) that can travel long distances, which facilitates the gene flow among populations. Historical factors such as the tectonic activity of the study area also influenced the genetic relationships observed among the populations, distinguishing closely related genetic groups such as A and B that cover a large part of the geographical distribution of the species and a differentiated group (group C) located in a more recent developed area in the department of Ucayali

DIAGNÓSTICO DE LA COMERCIALIZACIÓN INTERNACIONAL DE FAUNA SILVESTRE EN LORETO, PERÚ

The international trade in wildlife has a long history resulting in the near disappearance of some populations. This activity is an important economic alternative, both for the conservation of the species and for their sustainable use by the rural communities. A diagnosis of exports was carried out between 2001 and 2017, evaluating the value chain, commercialized species, export modalities, supply and demand, destinations, national and international threat categories of the main species and perception of those involved in wildlife. Information on international trade was obtained through the customs operation system, the perception through interviews and the current status of the species through the national and international levels of threat. In the value chain weaknesses were identified to be improved, such as avoiding data loss, guaranteeing the traceability of the resource and improving the articulation between public and private institutions allowing better control of trade. The value of exports amounts to US 16,672,657.00,fouritemsmakeup93.1 16, 672,657.00, four items make up 93.1% of this value, taricaya (Podocnemis unifilis) is the main one, whose destination is China and Hong Kong, followed by pecari hides (Tayassu pecari and Pecari tajacu) to Italy, red head iguana (Dracaena guianensis) to the United States and matamata tortoise (Chelus fimbriata) to China and Hong Kong whose demand has increased in almost all cases. Trade in these species does not put their natural populations at risk and is considered an important activity for the regional and national economyEl comercio internacional de fauna silvestre tiene una amplia historia resultando en la casi desaparición de algunas poblaciones.
