Get PDFThe contribution is based on the results of a research carried out at the Piombino steel mill during a period characterized by a deep crisis that led to the plants closure. However, the background of the analysis is not the blast furnace, the undisputed realm of the producer worker, but bathrooms, kitchens and refectories where the workers are became users and the key figure are women employed in restauration and janitory services. The analysis abandons the productive heart of the factory, characterized by industrial and Fordist work, to move in the adjoining space where the provision of services is accompanied by subcontracting, fragmentation of working time and the precariousness of the wage earner
Development of a curtain wall prototype with dynamic behaviour (SmartSkin)
Get PDFThe paper presents a research project, derived from a collaboration between Universities, manufacturers and designers with international experience in curtain walls and HVAC systems. The research consisted in experimenting a technological solution for a building envelope with dynamic behaviour and high aesthetic value, which is able to respond to the influence of fixed and variable factors – internal and external – with respect to regulatory requirements and flexibility needs during the design and the operational phase. The goal is to reduce the embodied energy of the components, optimise the energy consumption during the use phase and limit the construction costs with the segmentation of the devices, the shrinkage of the floor height and the acceleration of the assembly process

Get PDFThe paper presents the results of a research conducted on codes and standards adopted internationally for the design, construction and testing of hurricane- and tornado-resistant façades. These façades are built using technologies that pass tests in order to verify the resistance of both the frame and the glazed surface to the impacts caused by wind-borne debris during these extreme meteorological events. The aim of the research is the identification of the best practices that have been adopted, in order to increase the resilience of building envelopes to this weather phenomenon, evaluating the possible applicability of adopting the principles to the specific needs of the European and Italian market

Get PDFIl giorno 17 Marzo 2018, presso la Fondazione Scienza e Tecnica di Firenze, si è tenuto un seminario pubblico presentato da tre astronome dell’Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri sul tema della parità di genere in discipline scientifiche (definite anche discipline STEM dall’inglese Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Il seminario era inserito nell’iniziativa “Il Cielo Negato”, una mostra d’arte organizzata presso la Fondazione Scienza e Tecnica di Firenze centrata sul tema delle donne nella scienza accompagnata da incontri interdisciplinari di diversa natura.On March 17th 2018, the Fondazione Scienza e Tecnica in Florence hosted a special public conference held by three female astronomers working at the Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory: the subject of the conference was gender equality in scientific disciplines (often referred to as STEM, with STEM standing for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The conference was part of “Il Cielo Negato”, a broader initiative organised by the Fondazione Scienza e Tecnica, with a focus on the role of women in science. An art show on the subject is at the centre of the initiative, but several interdisciplinary events accompany the exhibition of Gloria Pastore’s works
