Baugruppen. Innovation through collaborative infrastructures
In the 1990s in Berlin the Baugruppen movement developed an innovative housing project as a “typological” experimentation. Several case studies will be analysed based on the users’ needs, the self-made construction, affordable options, collaborative housing, and creative participation. Once this model has been known a potential alternative can be applied to the shortage of housing options in Europe. This paper analyses several case-studies realized in Berlin which could be defined as a compact “vertical village” or “vertical mat-building” by land consumption reduction. Adopting the theoretical approach of the Baugruppen, the case studies will be evaluated through five key points: common infrastructure, personalized spheres, variable volume, hanging gardens, and shared common spaces, to validate their “typological” experimental quality
Un incunabulo per lo sposalizio di Isabella d’Aragona: le ‘Nuptiae illustrissimi ducis Mediolani’ di Stefano Dolcino (1489)
In the second part of the 15th century, the introduction of the printing press in Italy offered to lords and princes a new way to show their own power and divulge the splendour of the feasts for their dynastic events. In February 1489, Isabella of Aragon, niece of the King of Naples, entered into Milan and married the duke, Gian Galeazzo Sforza. Few months later, the printer Antonio Zarotto published a Latin description of the event: the Nuptiae illustrissimi ducis Mediolani by Stefano Dolcino. This paper aims at considering the history of this incunable, in order to find information about feasts and spectacles for celebrating marriages in the Sforza family. At the same time, the possibility of a propagandistic use of ceremonies and print in the occasion of a princely wedding will be investigated
Well-being and rurality: a spatial tool for rural development programs evaluation
Improving the quality of life of populations is one of the priorities of rural development policies. Based on the capability approach, the aim is to realise a Quality of Life (QoL) index measuring territorial disparities. The QoL index, aggregated by a non-compensatory method, is compared with rural and inland areas of the study area, Basilicata region. The analysis shows a clear relationship between features of QoL and rurality/peripherality degree and a global QoL below the regional average for 61% of municipalities. In these areas, as expected, the high level of environmental protection is offset by lower socio-economic opportunities but, the possibility to evaluate them through an index over time can help policymakers to address rural policies and evaluate their effects
Ripartire dal territorio, uno studio per una pianificazione dal locale. La Comunità Montana dei Monti Ernici tra marginalità, tradizioni e innovazione
The paper presents a study on the Mountain Community of Monti Ernici, located in the historic region of Ciociaria, with the purpose of rethinking territorial and economic planning of places starting from the local. The hypothesis behind our work is that territories should be interpreted, as suggested by Becattini, reviving the rooting of production systems to communities knowledge, ecosystem and the history of places. The Community of Monti Ernici presents a series of demographic issues (depopulation and aging of population in small mountain municipalities), an important lack of infrastructure and an inadequacy of welfare services and supply chains. A sort of ‘valley’ territorial and economic development, exacerbated by the recent global economic stagnation, has contributed increasing criticalities and losing territorial traditions and productive cultures. A possible revitalisation of the Ernici mountain communities is possible if we invest in handicraft and agricultural production on one side, and in the reconstruction and strengthening of services on the other
Rigenerazione urbana e accoglienza. Il ruolo del territorio
The paper describes a part of a research on the migrants’ reception system in Riace. It aims at being a reflection on the opportunity of designing good reception practices related to the current phenomenon of migration, following at the same time the purpose of regenerating the territories of small municipalities facing depopulation and abandonment. It should appear as a system able to translate the relationships between territory, city, human resources and hospitality into a phenomenon of resilience. The research was mainly conducted on field through direct experience within the municipality, and supported by studies of direct and indirect sources and the current legislation. Through the case study analysis, it was therefore possible to develop a strategy which could be successful in similar contexts. What is investigated is a possible study method for the territory in order to define the presence of favourable or unfavourable conditions for the implementation of a project of urban regeneration and hospitality. In particular it considers social, economic, urban and architectural conditions through the concepts of human, social, institutional and physical capital, emphasizing the qualities of a place able to create forms of sociality and collective development. Hence, the aim is to put two current issues, migration and depopulation of minor areas, together into a system towards the opportunity of a symbiotic solution
L’occhio performante: la fotografia come strumento di costruzione del freak ottocentesco
This paper highlights the complex construction of the meaning of the freak body operated by photographic practices in the 19th century. One of the first uses of the medium was the documentation of patients as a way to legitimate modern medical discourses on the body. The aim of this study is to stress photography’s role in the creation of categories such as “disability,” “deviant,” and “extraordinary”. The analysis focuses on Charles Eisenmann’s freak portraits, which can be read as a popularization of the general trend toward the classification of human diversity in the exhibition of disabled bodies
