The first English translation of Dei delitti e delle pene. A question of sources and modifications

    Get PDF
Unlike the first French translation, which has received adequate scholarly attention, the first English translation, printed in London in 1767 for the Whig bookseller, journalist and advocate for the freedom of the press John Almon, has as yet been neglected by research. Following on from my previous essay, which investigated the editorial and political contexts, this study focuses on the translated text, enquiring about its sources and faithfulness to the original. Indeed, a collation with one of the two Italian sixth editions (1766) and with Morellet’s version (dated 1766, but printed on 28 December 1765) revealed that this text, which was the main channel for the dissemination of Beccaria’s ideas in the English speaking world, used both the Italian original and the French version as sources. In addition and most strikingly, the collation also showed that the translation contains modifications of significant passages, which appear in neither source. The present article interprets changes introduced in chapter II (“Of the Right to Punish”) and in chapter XXVIII (“Of the Punishment of Death”). They intervene surprisingly on passages whose interpretation is still debated among present day scholars

Healing, Translating, Collecting. Doctor Michelangelo Tilli across the Ottoman Empire (1683–85)

    Get PDF
The article is based on the correspondence between doctor Michelangelo Tilli, the secretary of Granduke Cosimo III de’Medici in Florence and doctor Francesco Redi head physician at the Medici Court and a leading scientist in Europe. Michelangelo Tilli (1655-1750) a young physician graduated from the university of Pisa, between 1683 and 1685 travelled to the Ottoman Empire with the official charge of treating Mustafa pasha “Mussaip”, grand admiral of the Turkish fleet and son in law of Sultan Mehmed IV. It was a relevant diplomatic and political move to send a promising physician to treat the Pasha during the crucial military campaign of the Turks in Central Europe against the Holy League while Christian armies were confronting the last Ottoman attack to Vienna and Hungary.  From Istanbul Tilli travelled to Belgrade and back, while the Ottomans were at war with the Hapsburg Empire. The catastrophic consequences of the siege of Vienna in September 1683 resonate in his letters and reports, to date unpublished among the literature on these events. Tilli’s letters intersect political and diplomatic information with medical therapy, botanical observation and the search for antiquities, showing the plurality of functions performed by early modern medical practitioners across imperial boundaries

We have chosen to use a descriptive research design in order to investigate the employability potential of 200 young adults (18-30 years old) with different kinds of disability living in Campania. Within the selected sample, we have further selected and interviewed 20 young adults who are engaged in working activities, in order to identify the resources they have mobilized and the facilitators used to support their functioning in order to be included in a working context. The research results show how young disabled adults living in Campania require to be supported in the development of their employability potential with interventions that should be focused in particular on the area of guidance , using pathways and tools aimed at supporting their capacity to design their own life and professional project in a more inclusive way, taking into account the resources available and the contextual barriers. This study uses secondary data analysis to investigate the motives behind non-traditional students starting university studies. The data were collected during the first part of a longitudinal on-line survey conducted at Masaryk University amongst first-year students attending all of the university’s bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes. The Academic Motivation Scale was the tool used in the original research to explore the university students’ reasons for beginning their studies. A sub-sample of the primary study population, adult students 26 years of age or older who had taken a break from their educational trajectories, were identified as non-traditional students. We found that the hierarchy of non-traditional students’ motives for entering higher education diverged from the hierarchy of the rest of the sample.
