Conversazione con Jurij Lotman
In September 1987, my friend Marzio Marzaduri and I were in Moscow carrying out our research in public libraries and archives. During our stay, we thought it would be useful to meet with Jurij Lotman, given that Marzio was writing his biography (the first part would be published in 1989 in Milan) and I wished to talk with him about Puškin’s poem The Prisoner of the Caucasus. Thanks to the intermediation of professor Igor’ Černov, Lotman invited us to lunch at his home. On September 29 we arrived in Tartu, where Lotman, together with his wife, Zara Minc, a well-known Blok scholar, welcomed us with great cordiality. The following conversation with Lotman, about The Prisoner of the Caucasus, its sources and influences, was recorded on tape on that occasion. In September 1987, my friend Marzio Marzaduri and I were in Moscow carrying out our research in public libraries and archives. Soilborne diseases caused by Fusarium and Neocosmospora spp. on ornamental plants in Italy
During surveys conducted in 2010–2014, several disease symptoms were observed on eight ornamental plant species in different nurseries located in Sicily (Southern Italy). Two Neocosmospora and 31 Fusarium isolates were recovered from symptomatic plants. Fungus identification was based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of fragments of the intergenic spacer (IGS), internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) regions of the rDNA; partial fragments of the beta-tubulin (TUB), RNA polymerase largest subunit (RPB1), RNA polymerase second largest subunit (RPB2) and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF-1α) genes. The Fusarium species recovered from ornamental plants were F. agapanthi (from Agapanthus africanus), F. anthophilum (Dasylirion longissimum), F. fujikuroi (Trachycarpus princeps), F. oxysporum (Bougainvillea glabra, Cordyline australis ‘Purpurea’, Dasylirion longissimum, Eremophila laanii and Philoteca myoporoides) and F. proliferatum (T. princeps), while N. solani was isolated from crown and root rot of Ficus carica. The pathogenicity of representative isolates collected from each host was tested on seedlings or cuttings grown in a growth chamber. All the Fusarium and Neocosmospora isolates tested were pathogenic and reproduced symptoms identical to those observed in the field, except for F. fujikuroi on T. princeps and F. oxysporum on D. longissimum that were non-pathogenic
Leaf rot caused by Rhizopus oryzae on pak choy (Brassica campestris ssp. chinensis) in China
Pak choy (Brassica campestris ssp. chinensis L.) is the major vegetable crop cultivated in China. During December 2017, leaf rot was frequently observed on leaves of pak choy in greenhouses of Shanghai, China. Diseased leaf samples were plated onto acidified potato dextrose agar and fungal cultures were isolated and identified as Rhizopus oryzae, based on morphological features and molecular identification. Definitive identification as R. oryzae was based on the comparative molecular analysis of rRNA gene sequences. Blast analysis revealed 99% similarity with R. oryzae. Pathogenicity was determined by inoculating healthy pak choy leaves and plants with hyphal suspensions of R. oryzae. The fungus was re-isolated from developing similar lesions on the inoculated plants and identified as similar to the inoculated fungus, thus fulfilling Koch’s postulates. This is the first report of fungal leaf rot caused by R. oryzae on pak choy in China
Казаня на погребе (Требник, Вильно 1621) в контексте католической традиции ‘образцовых’ поучений на погребение
The article discusses hypotheses for the possible sources of two funeral sample sermons written in prostaja mova, which were addressed to the laity and attached to the Ritual edition by the Orthodox Brotherhood of Vilnius in 1621. The author suggests that the very combination of homiletic material in vernacular language with the traditional ecclesiastical rites goes back to the Catholics Ritual рublished in 1551 in Mainz and was later followed in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth by Stanisław Karnkowski, Marcin Kromer and Hieronim Powodowski. The two funeral sample sermons attached to the Vilnius Ritual used as a main source a homiletic work of Georg Barthold Pontanus (1550-1614), Incineratio Funebres (1611). The first sermon used as a model a fragment entitled Consolatoria super omnes charissimos, et habet decem rationes, composed by Pontanus on the basis of the medieval consolation, which goes back to the English Dominican Robert Holсot (1290-1349). This text of consolation, sometimes called as Fatuitates immoderate lugentiam, was widely available in different published editions in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries: in liturgical sermons, books on rhetoric, dialogs ‘pompa funebris’, and manuals for Jesuits Sodalities of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This consolation was also translated in Polish at the beginning of the 17th century. The second funeral sermon of the Vilnius Ritual used a fragment from Pontanus, which goes back to the Summa de Abstinentia by Nicolaus de Byard (died 1261). The chapter of this work (entitled Mors or De Mortis) was found in the Middle Ages in Speculum morale, attributed to Vincent of Beauvais (ca. 1190-ca. 1264), and in the 16th century was included in Dictionarium pauperum by Franciscan Petrus Ridolfi (1536-1601).Although the funeral sample sermons from 1621 were not republished in other Vilnius Rituals, they served as an example for the later Orthodox hierarchs, who expanded their Rituals editions with instructive sermons in vernacular language. Response of four Portuguese grapevine cultivars to infection by Phaeomoniella chlamydospora
Little is known of the response of Portuguese Dão wine appellation’s most common grapevine cultivars to the causal agents of esca and Petri diseases, despite the high incidence of both diseases in the region and the consequent economic losses. Phaeomoniella chlamydospora has been considered one of the major causal agents of these diseases in that region. The present study evaluated the responses of four of the most propagated Dão’s grapevine cultivars – Alfrocheiro, Aragonez, Jaen and Touriga Nacional – to infection by three different Portuguese isolates of P. chlamydospora. Field trials were conducted in 2012, 2013 and 2015. The cultivar Alfrocheiro was the most susceptible to P. chlamydospora while cv. Jaen was the least. Variation in parameters such as lesion length and pathogen recovery from infected spurs (within trial years) suggest relation of pathogenicity with weather data, particularly temperature. Differences in aggressiveness among isolates were also detected, with one, a non-native, being the most aggressive. These results provide valuable information for local winegrowers, identifying, for the first time, susceptibility differences among local cultivars to P. chlamydospora, and suggesting adjustments to recommended pruning strategies, specifically to leave long spurs and avoid late winter pruning, thus reducing grapevine trunk colonization by P. chlamydospora
“On the Crater of a Volcano”: V.A. Žukovskij and the Revolution of 1848
The topic of the Poet and Revolution, which has long been classical in Russian studies, usually considers the creative work of the authors who lived in the era of the revolutionary disturbances of the 20th century. However, this is not the only way to approach this issue: the revolution of 1917 cast a long shadow into the past, and it was already in the 1840s and 1850s that many thought that they lived ‘on the eve of’. The European upheaval of 1848 was experienced as a precursor to the coming Russian storms, as a prologue to the drama, which had yet to be played out on the stage of Russian history. One of the writers of the 19th century who had a chance to face the revolution was Vasilij Žukovskij. Žukovskij’s experience with revolution is even more interesting, given that his personal mythopoesis and ‘theo-political’ visions of the immediately preceding years (i.e., the early 1840s) were modeling – and indeed were seeing – a genuine approaching of Eden on Earth. The present paper examines the eve and the aftermath of the dramatic turn in Žukovskij’s life experience, through an analysis of his journalism, his relationship with the royal family, and mythopoesis in his poems Zaviduju portretu moemu, K russkomu velikanu etc.The topic of the Poet and Revolution, which has long been classical in Russian studies, usually considers the creative work of the authors who lived in the era of the revolutionary disturbances of the 20th century. Artigiani digitali. Per un modello innovativo di work related learning e di alternanza scuola-lavoro
We tackle the work related learning issue and the matter of the school job alternance in terms of innovative working experiences focusing on those not bound to conventional formative proposals. More specifically we refer to the role that creative careers can play in the remaking and rethinking of the city and we examine the possibilities of a creative training that pursues a tradition that combines arts and crafts, analyzing, at last, the role of the contemporary digital maker
Sul pericolo di un «mondo amministrato»: la Kritik di Horkheimer
The article focuses on a short essay published by Max Horkheimer in 1970, entitled "On the risk of an administrated world”. Here the reflections of the founder of the ‒ so called ‒ “Frankfurt School” dwell on the relationship which in modern society is established between the concepts of “truth”, “science” and “correctness”, pushing his critical theory to formulate the possibility and necessity of a «Reform der Bildung»: namely, a reform of human formation. This is a hidden pedagogical angle of his «Kritik»
