Pleurostomophora richardsiae associated with olive tree and grapevine decline in Southern Brazil

    Get PDF
Olive trees showing decline symptoms were reported in an orchard in Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil. The symptoms included foliar browning and leaf drop, dieback of twigs and branches, dark streaks in internal crown wood and necrotic lesions in bark. A grapevine sample exhibiting browning streaks in the vascular tissue of branches, trunk and roots, was also analysed. A Phialophora-like fungus was isolated from symptomatic tissues of both hosts, and monosporic cultures were established. Based on morphology and analysis of ITS, tub2 and tef sequences, the fungus was identified as Pleurostomophora richardsiae. Isolates inoculated onto young nursery olive trees and grapevines produced brown streaking in the wood in most of the inoculated plants. This is the first report of P. richardsiae occurring in olive trees and grapevines in Brazil

The Position and Development of the Croatian Language from 1918 to 1945

    No full text
This paper provides an overview of the position and development of the Croatian language from 1918 to 1945, including government involvement in language, norming work by Croatian linguists, and its stylistically stratified usage. After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the Croatian language found itself in a new situation, exposed to unitarist tendencies within a South Slavic state. During the Second World War and the fascist Independent State of Croatia, the linguistic freedoms of the population were threatened, and both public and private language use found itself under state scrutiny. Despite this, a number of philological works and handbooks describing the Croatian language were published from 1918 to 1945, and the usage of the Croatian language reached expressive peaks in all functional styles during this period. This paper provides an overview of the position and development of the Croatian language from 1918 to 1945, including government involvement in language, norming work by Croatian linguists, and its stylistically stratified usage. Fissuring into Existence. The Visceral, Sculptural, and Textile-Textual in the Poetry of Maggie O’Sullivan and Nóra Ružičková

The paper, written in the spirit of Badiouian comparatisme quand même (Apter 2006), concentrates on establishing a detailed comparative basis between the poetry of a uk-based poet, Maggie O’Sullivan, and a Slovak author Nóra Ružičková, written at approximately the same time. Despite belonging to different generations and being part of different culturally and geopolitically literary landscapes, the two poets treat the language and other media in an uncannily similar fashion. Their poetries come together not only in images of writing through the wounded body, but also in the way they carve the language to make it voice what it had been suppressing as well as in their explorations of the relationship between the text and textile. Veselovskiana 2016. The Contribution of “Rossijskie Propilei”

In the last few decades both in Russia and abroad the interest in Aleksandr Veselovskij, the ‘father of historical poetics’, has been increasing. In 2016 alone the Russian editorial series “Rossijskie Propilei” dedicated four publications to this important 19th century Russian scholar, one monograph and three collections of works, articles and book excerpts. The four books deal with, respectively: Vasilij Žukovskij, the most important Russian poet before Puškin, discussing his role between Sentimentalism and Romanticism; the Renaissance, focusing especially on the peculiarity of the Italian context; methodology of the humanities, on the basis of carefully selected reviews; and the Holy Grail, proposing many interesting and still useful theories on the origins and development of this legend. Despite some flaws (inaccurate form and questionable statements), “Rossijskie Propilei” has provided new tools to better understand the legacy of one of the most important figures in literary studies. In the last few decades both in Russia and abroad the interest in Aleksandr Veselovskij, the ‘father of historical poetics’, has been increasing. Religious Identification Through the Calendar. Kyivan and Moscow Great Feasts in the Late 18th Century

The author analyzes various liturgical short calendars printed in Moscow and Kyiv in the 18th century. Generally, by the end of the century, the efforts of the Holy Synod succeeded in unifying Orthodox doctrine and celebrations in all the regions of the Russian Empire. In this article the author specifically focuses on the level of solemnity of some non-mobile feasts. The analysis of two Calendars printed respectively in Moscow in 1795 and in Kyiv in 1798 shows that the level of solemnity of the feasts of some saints or icons in several cases diverged in Kyiv and Moscow. This indicates that there were still differences between the ecclesiastical practice of the Russian Church and the Kyivan Metropolia. The paper suggests the historical, political and cultural roots of such differences. The Author analyzes some liturgical short Calendars printed in Moscow and Kyiv in the 18th century. L’irrequietezza come scelta

The essay traces the complex path of a high-profile intellectual who has profoundly innovated European sociological thought. Ralf Dahrendorf’s “restlessness” is the basis of a continuous transition between different and distant countries and universities and of his wise oscillation between study and politics, between scientific analysis and diagnosis of contemporaneity. A careful biographical reconstruction is followed by a critical presentation of his extraordinary contribution on four interdependent intellectual and normative themes: the rejection of utopia and homo sociologicus, the passionate acceptance and reflection on conflict, the exploration of entitlements and provisions, options and ligatures. A significant portrait emerges that underlines the tension between his social theory, or rather, a conception of sociology that constantly avoids formal abstraction because it considers the person in his full humanity and his orientations as a liberal democrat at the centre of his interest. His firm neo-liberal conviction, however, has never stifled his social-democratic instincts of family origin. The moral action that guided Dahrendorf in his public life as a European scientist and politician never made him ein großer Ordinarius but always ein großer Mensch

Ralf Dahrendorf e l’immagine morale dell’uomo. Ermeneutica della libertà e logica della giustizia sociale

The subject of this essay is social and political liberty, and the nature of the limits that the State and society can be exercised above individuals. With regard to liberty, Dahrendorf carries out two essential operations. First of all, liberty is placed against equality. Then, within a unitary vision of this concept, he shows its fundamental elements, and distinguishes two totally interconnected aspects: the «problematic» concept of liberty and the «assertoric» concept of liberty. According to this hermeneutical hypothesis, i.e. assertoric liberty as a mode of human existence by specific realities behaviour, Dahrendorf defines a form of thinking that is totally separated from the historiography of political liberalism. Furthermore, the principle of social justice is always present in Dahrendorf’s political thought. In this sense, social inclusion is a moral duty, its rational justification is based on a criterion of justice. The process of inclusion of the greatest number of individuals in the sphere of the social contract means adherence to the norms of social coexistence and a condition for the survival of civil society

Un incontro mancato? Baudelaire e Wagner

The current contribution aims to disclose to the Italian readers some relevant aspects of a forthcoming volume entitled: Baudelaire et Wagner. In spite of an ideological purpose prevailing in the 18th Century – fraternity and correspondence between arts –, a secret rivalry between arts and artists themselves is assumed. This essay mainly focuses on the relationship between Baudelaire and Wagner in order to discuss, on the basis of the intertextuality and discourse analysis of Baudelaire’s Richard Wagner et Tannhäuser à Paris, its traditional interpretation: under cover of irony, the panegyric hides in fact, a pamphlet
