Role of lithium in enhancing radiation tolerance under γ-irradiation in lithium borosilicate waste glasses

    No full text
Lithium-containing borosilicate glasses are used for the safe containment of high-level nuclear waste in the UK. Glasses were fabricated with varying Li2O contents and irradiated to a total γ-dose of 80 MGy to probe the relationship between Li2O contents and γ irradiation-induced defects. Semi-quantitative X-band Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) measurements revealed the formation of boron-oxygen hole centres (BOHC), electron-trap centres, Oxy radicals and hole centres (HC1) defects after γ-radiation. The results highlight the beneficial impact lithium has on the glass network against the formation of paramagnetic defects by transforming BO3 sites to [BO4]-. Experimental evidence from EPR and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy indicated that the primary defects formed in the 4-component and 7-component glasses are BOHCs on bridging oxygens of the BO3 sites and Oxy radicals linked to silicon atoms, respectively. All glass compositions reached defect saturation around 25 MGy suggesting that the number of components in the glass network or Li2O content does not significantly influence saturation dose, however, no change in the environment or connectivity of the boron, sodium or silicon subnetworks was observed by multinuclear NMR

Comparing methods of human precision cut tissue slice culture - tissue slice viability and functional markers data

    No full text
This study examines the viability and functionality of hPCTS using different tissue culture formats. hPCTS were cultured for 15 days using an organotypic polytetrafluoroethylene Millicell insert, a CELLBLOKS® hydrophilic polyethylene terephthalate flow system plate or without an insert. Viability was assessed through MTS assays, while functionality was determined by measuring urea and albumin secretion across the 15 days in culture

Technology-assisted cognitive-behavioral therapy for perinatal depression delivered by lived-experience peers: a cluster-randomized noninferiority trial

    No full text
Perinatal depression affects one in four women in low- and middle-income countries. The World Health Organization’s Thinking Healthy Programme (WHO-THP) is an established ‘task-shared’ cognitive-behavioral therapy intervention for perinatal depression. However, efforts to scale up are hampered by overburdened health systems struggling to maintain quality and fidelity. Here, to overcome these challenges, we coproduced with end users a technology-assisted digital version of the THP delivered by lived-experience peers (technology-assisted peer-delivered THP (THP-TAP)). We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of THP-TAP compared to the established WHO-THP. A single-blind cluster-randomized controlled noninferiority trial was conducted in rural Rawalpindi, Pakistan, with 70 village clusters randomly distributed to the two interventions. From June 2022 to May 2023, we recruited 980 women with perinatal depression registered with primary healthcare centers. The primary outcome was remission from the depressive episode at 3 months postnatal. On assessment of 846/980 (86.3%) participants at 3 months postnatal, the difference in the remission rate was 8.91% with the lower boundary of the one-sided 97.5% confidence interval being 4.25%, larger than the prespecified −10% noninferiority margin (Pnoninferiority < 0.0001). In settings where health systems are weak and overburdened, THP-TAP offers an effective and potentially scalable alternative to the delivery of psychosocial interventions. Nanoparticles motion in simple fluids and hydrogels; alongside the bulk rheological characterisation of the corresponding media.

    No full text
The following data repository contains raw data produced for the development of a passive nanorheological tool, where gold nanoparticles were used as nanoprobes to characterise localised dynamic rheology at the micro/nanoscale of the different investigated hydrogels through the experimental values of diffusion coefficient. This data is presented in the form of videos, of 100 nm gold nanoparticles (nanoprobes) in different media (simple fluids and hydrogels), recorded using an optical inverted microscopy. Also, bulk rheological characterisation of the investigate media is presented in excel files. - Experimental validation of the nanorheological tool: Videos and bulk rheology data of the Newtonian fluids (glycerol solutions and silicone oil). - Characterisation of localised environments in heterogeneous hydrogels: Videos and bulk rheology data of the agar-hyaluronic acid hydrogels. - Real-time identification of the sol-gel phase transition in thermosensitive hydrogel: Videos and bulk rheology data of Pluronic® F127 at 20% (w/v)
