    This supporting material consists of a series of videos showing the motion and interaction with surfaces of Escherichia coli bacteria over time. The frame rate of each video is 5x the original acquisition frame rate. The working concentration of Escherichia coli bacteria used is 10^8 CFU/mL. Each test was conducted at 37 °C exposing the bacteria to control glass surface or to glass surface treated with BKC following the procedure described in the materials and methods section of the dissertation

    Cross-species transcriptomics uncovers genes underlying genetic accommodation of developmental plasticity in spadefoot toads

    That hardcoded genomes can manifest as plastic phenotypes responding to environmental perturbations is a fascinating feature of living organisms. How such developmental plasticity is regulated at the molecular level is beginning to be uncovered aided by the development of -omic techniques. Here, we compare the transcriptome-wide responses of two species of spadefoot toads with differing capacity for developmental acceleration of their larvae in the face of a shared environmental risk: pond drying. By comparing gene expression profiles over time and performing cross-species network analyses, we identified orthologues and functional gene pathways whose environmental sensitivity in expression have diverged between species. Genes related to lipid, cholesterol and steroid biosynthesis and metabolism make up most of a module of genes environmentally responsive in one species, but canalized in the other. The evolutionary changes in the regulation of the genes identified through these analyses may have been key in the genetic accommodation of developmental plasticity in this system

    The appearance of one-dimensional strings of local excitations represents an interesting feature of the physical behavior of strongly correlated topological quantum matter. Here we demonstrate that strings of local excitations can also describe the physics of a classical thermal system of interacting nanomagnets, the Santa Fe Ice geometry of artificial spin ice. We measure the moment configuration of the nanomagnets, both after annealing near the ferromagnetic Curie point and in a thermally dynamic state. While the Santa Fe Ice lattice structure is complex, we demonstrate that its disordered magnetic state is naturally described within a framework of emergent strings. We show experimentally that the string length follows a simple Boltzmann distribution with an energy scale that is associated with the system’s magnetic interactions and that is consistent with theoretical predictions. The results demonstrate that string descriptions and associated topological characteristics are not unique to quantum models, but that they also provide a simplifying description of complex classical systems with non-trivial frustration

    Aquatic foods from marine and freshwater systems are critical to the nutrition, health, livelihoods, economies and culture of billions of people worldwide – but climate-related hazards may compromise their ability to provide these benefits. This analysis estimates national-level aquatic food system climate risk using a fuzzy logic modelling approach that connects climate hazards impacting marine and freshwater capture fisheries and aquaculture to their contributions to sustainable food system outcomes, and vulnerability to losing those contributions. Estimates are presented for a high and a low emissions scenario in three different time windows (2030, 2050, 2090)

    Summary This indicator measures the number of Orlistat that are prescribed on a quarterly basis by all practices in England, including GP practices. Numbers are given for the total number of items prescribed/dispensed and the total net ingredient cost (NIC) across areas of England. Technical description The data covers NHS prescriptions of Orlistat (BNF code with prefix “0405010P0”) written in England and dispensed in the community in the UK. Prescriptions written in England but dispensed outside England are included. The data includes prescriptions written by GPs and other non-medical prescribers (such as nurses and pharmacists) who are attached to GP practices. To allocate the prescribed items to each LSOA area, the Patients registered at a GP practice at Lower Super Output Area (LSOA) level was used. Patients Registered at a GP Practice dataset is a quarterly publication by NHS Digital and provides the count of patients by gender.     Local Authority Finance: Gross Current Expenditure - Public Health services (FIN_07_24)

    Summary This indicator describes the annual gross service expenditure for Public Health services provided by every Local Authority in England since it was introduced in 2013. The gross expenditure describes the total spending by Local Authorities associated with delivering these services. Technical description The indicator was compiled from annual revenue outturn estimates of Local Authority (LA) revenue expenditure and financing. The Public Health services expenditure includes employee costs and running expenses for these services. Expenditure values are given on the basis of financial years, i.e. from April 1st to March 31st. Values are expressed in thousands (£). Since some services are provided in Upper Tier and others in Lower Tier LAs, individual spending figures from Upper Tier LAs were distributed to Lower Tier LAs based on annual population ratios (indicator FIN_07_24L), and Lower Tier LA spending was distributed to Upper Tier LAs by aggregating (indicator FIN_07_24U). Expenditure values from historic LA geography have been referenced to the 2018 LA geography. This includes changes in name/codes, merges, or splits of old LAs to new LAs based on population ratios for that year. The service expenditure is expressed as the total amount as well as per capita, for direct comparisons. However, expenditure figures were not adjusted for inflation
