    Homo sapiens have adapted to an incredible diversity of habitats around the globe. This capacity to adapt to different landscapes is clearly expressed within Africa, with Late Pleistocene Homo sapiens populations occupying savannahs, woodlands, coastlines and mountainous terrain. As the only area of the world where Homo sapiens have clearly persisted through multiple glacial-interglacial cycles, Africa is the only continent where classic refugia models can be formulated and tested to examine and describe changing patterns of past distributions and human phylogeographies. The potential role of refugia has frequently been acknowledged in the Late Pleistocene palaeoanthropological literature, yet explicit identification of potential refugia has been limited by the patchy nature of palaeoenvironmental and archaeological records, and the low temporal resolution of climate or ecological models. Here, we apply potential climatic thresholds on human habitation, rooted in ethnographic studies, in combination with high resolution model datasets for precipitation and biome distributions to identify persistent refugia spanning the Late Pleistocene (130-10 thousand years ago). We present two alternate models suggesting that between 27-66% of Africa may have provided refugia to Late Pleistocene human populations, and examine variability in precipitation, biome, and ecotone distributions within these refugial zones

    This dataset concerns moth (Lepidoptera) species in Great Britain and was compiled to address the question: Which landscape attributes have caused differential speeds of range expansion since 1985, both between landscapes and between species? More specifically, does the ‘conductance’ measured across a network of habitat help to predict the speed of range expansion? Conductance is a modelled measure of the speed at which a species could colonise a defined ‘target’ from a defined ‘source’ via a network of habitat patches. If it is predictive of real range expansion rates, it could be used to pinpoint the best places to target habitat conservation and restoration efforts. Our analysis leverages climate and landcover data alongside two exceptional spatio-temporal databases for moth species in Britain. The Rothamsted Insect Survey is a scattered network of traps that are continuously monitored, which provides ideal “target” locations to test when each species arrived. The National Moth Recording Scheme collates verified records of species from all locations, providing the most complete picture possible of the “source” distribution where expanding species could have originated. We used previous studies (Fox et al., 2014) and these databases to select 54 species that were southerly distributed in Britain and showed some sign of range expansion.     Cation Disorder and Large Tetragonal Supercell Ordering in the Li-rich Argyrodite Li7Zn0.5SiS6

    A tetragonal argyrodite with >7 mobile cations, Li7Zn0.5SiS6, is experimentally realized for the first time through solid state synthesis and exploration of the Li-Zn-Si-S phase diagram. The crystal structure of Li7Zn0.5SiS6 was solved ab initio from high-resolution X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data and supported by solid-state NMR. Li7Zn0.5SiS6 adopts a tetragonal I4 ̅ structure at room temperature with ordered Li and Zn positions and undergoes a transition above 411.1(5) K to a higher symmetry disordered F4 ̅3m structure more typical of Li-containing argyrodites. Simultaneous occupation of four types of Li site (T5, T5a, T2, T4) at high temperature and five types of site (T5, T2, T4, T1, and a new trigonal planar T2a position) at room temperature is observed. This combination of sites forms interconnected Li pathways driven by the incorporation of Zn2+ into the Li sublattice and enables a range of possible jump processes. Zn2+ occupies the 48h T5 site in the high-temperature F4 ̅3m structure, and a unique ordering pattern emerges in which only a subset of these T5 sites are occupied at room temperature in I4 ̅ Li7Zn0.5SiS6. The ionic conductivity, examined via AC impedance spectroscopy and VT-NMR, is 1.0(2) × 10–7 S cm–1 at room temperature and is 4.3(4) × 10–4 S cm–1at 503 K. The transition between the ordered I4 ̅ and disordered F4 ̅3m structures is associated with a dramatic decrease in activation energy to 0.34(1) eV above 411 K. The incorporation of a small amount of Zn2+ exercises dramatic control of Li order in Li7Zn0.5SiS6 yielding a previously unseen distribution of Li sites, expanding our understanding of structure-property relationships in argyrodite materials

Thesis abstract: The interacting forces of land-use and climate change are having unpredictable and idiosyncratic effects on species, both globally and within the United Kingdom. For example, there are some cases where previously threatened species are now expected to benefit from climate change, an outcome which could alleviate pressure on conservation resources and planning. In our study, we examined one such case; Pyrgus malvae, a warm-preferring butterfly and specialist of semi-natural ephemeral habitats in the south of England, which has been in long term decline. Declines were likely driven by habitat loss, but the species was predicted to expand northward under warming temperatures. However, in our investigations of long term abundance records, we found that P. malvae declines in the UK were steeper in the north and west of its range, and independent of climate effects, which negates the likelihood of imminent northward expansion. We then surveyed habitat patches and undertook analysis into signs of higher specificity towards the north or west, and found that habitat requirements were largely similar across its England range. Furthermore, we discovered that many ‘significant’ determinants of presence and abundance were related to physical structures associated with warm microclimates, reinforcing the already known importance of microclimates for the species. Having explored the risk to habitat quality for individual populations from habitat degradation, we then investigated the threats to metapopulations from land-use change and habitat loss to continued succession using Individual Based Modelling. We found that increased scrub encroachment in patches decreased overall time spent in habitat (i.e. opportunities for breeding and population growth), and movements between patches (i.e. impacting rescue effects and recolonisations). Additionally, intervention to protect individual sites at expense of others could have positive or negative effects on patch network connectivity, or time spent in habitat. Division of resources between sites should therefore consider desired outcomes at the landscape level. Based on our own findings, and existing literature, we have made some recommendations on implementing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for P. malvae for conservation assessment and standardisation to combat gradual loss of populations around the country, which would increase the likelihood of collapse of population networks. More sustainable approaches to conservation will likely be needed in an environment with changing climate, longer growing seasons, higher nutrient deposition, and increasing land-use demands, in order to prevent further losses of P. malvae and species like it
