    In the mind of the beholder: The effects of habituation on the perception of atypical infant facial configurations

    Infant faces are strong attentional attractors. Disruption to their typical configuration can, however, attenuate their attractiveness, as rated by adult observers. Previous research has either focused on how ratings are affected by observer characteristics (e.g., male/female), or alterations to infant faces, either experimentally, or naturalistically induced, such as the presence of a cleft lip. Little research has however been conducted on the effects of observer experience on adult ratings of infant facial attractiveness. Such effects could inform clinical work and policies aimed at promoting positive perception of facial malformations. The present study thus explored the effects of habituation on how typical and atypical infant facial configurations are evaluated by adult observers. We recruited two groups of female participants and compared their subjective attractiveness ratings of infant faces (24 typical and 24 cleft-affected), at baseline, and at a one-week follow-up. Between the two assessments, one group (n=44) underwent a week-long training phase, where they were familiarised with cleft lip/palate-related visual and informational stimuli, while the control group (n=41) received no training. Significantly higher ratings were provided for faces of typically developing versus cleft-affected infants by both groups of participants at baseline. At follow-up, this pattern of ratings was repeated in participants belonging to the control group, while familiarised participants showed an increase, compared to baseline, in their ratings of cleft-affected faces and no difference between their evaluation of the latter and that of typically developing faces. The reported findings extend our understanding of the role of observer experiences in the evaluation of infant faces, beyond the effects of the structural characteristics of the observed faces. Results also highlight familiarity as a potentially protective influence against the negative consequences of alterations to typical facial configurations, suggesting possible avenues for intervention in supporting adult caregivers in the context of neonatal facial malformations

Patients are of all ages, and numbers are given for consecutive years since 2011, across areas of England. Technical description The percentage of patients with a diagnosis of depression. GP practices reporting extreme depression prevalence are excluded from the calculation. Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) data by GP practice and year were provided by the data owners (NHS Digital). These data were used to calculate weighted averages of the indicator by Lower Super Output Area (LSOA)

    Biases and distribution patterns in hard-bodied microscopic animals (Acari: Halacaridae): Size doesn’t matter, but generalism and sampling effort do

    The interplay between distribution ranges, species traits, and sampling and taxonomic biases remain elusive amongst microscopic animals. This ignorance obscures our understanding of the diversity patterns of a major component of biodiversity. Here, we used marine Halacaridae to explore whether differences between marine provinces can explain their distribution patterns or if differential sampling efforts across regions prevent any macroecological inference. Furthermore, we test if certain functional traits influence their distribution patterns. Location Europe. Results Whereas geographical variables provided a better explanation for differences in species composition, sampling effort and distance from marine biological stations accounted for the majority of differences in European Halacaridae richness. Species occurring in more habitats showed broader geographical ranges and accumulated more records. Species traits like body size affected the distribution of halacarid species. Main conclusions We propose that the sampling effort of halacarid mites in Europe might be explained by two different cognitive biases: the convenience of selecting certain sampling localities compared to others, and the tendency of zoologists to scrutinize habitats where their target organisms are more common

    Disentangling different pathways to dominance in western Amazonian forests

    Dominance of neotropical tree communities by a few species is widely documented, yet the different pathways that Amazonian plants follow to achieve dominance remain poorly understood. Here, we used 503 forest inventory plots (93,719 individuals ≥ 2.5 cm diameter, 2,609 species) to explore the relationships between local abundance, regional frequency, and spatial aggregation of dominant species across habitats in western Amazonia. Contrary to the well-supported abundance-occupancy relationship, we found that among dominant Amazonian tree species, there is a strong negative relationship between local abundance and regional frequency/spatial aggregation across habitat types. Our findings suggest an ecological trade-off whereby dominant species can allocate resources to being locally abundant (local dominants) or regionally widespread (widespread dominants), but rarely both (oligarchs). Given the importance of dominant species as drivers of diversity and ecosystem functioning, unraveling different modes of dominance is a research priority to direct conservation efforts in Amazonian forests

    The data was collected as part of a project entitled: Linking socio-ecological transformation and arthropod borne diseases. It explores the links between land-use changes and diseases in livestock species by studying various biotic (e.g. cattle density, disease infection rates, vector species composition, abundance of invasive plants, vegetation structure and diversity) and abiotic (temperature, rainfall and humidity, also in respect to climate change) factors, as well as taking into account the socio-cultural behaviour of pastoralists.This project is supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG), through funding for the project “B02 Future Infections” as part of the Collaborative Research Center “Future Rural Africa”.
