    Wild animals are under constant threat from a wide range of micro- and macroparasites in their environment. Animals make immune responses against parasites, and these are important in affecting the dynamics of parasite populations. Individual animals vary in their anti-parasite immune responses. Genetic polymorphism of immune-related loci contributes to inter-individual differences in immune responses, but most of what we know in this regard comes from studies of humans or laboratory animals; there are very few such studies of wild animals naturally infected with parasites. Here we have investigated the effect of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) in immune-related loci (the MHC, and loci coding for cytokines and Toll-like receptors) on a wide range of immune and infection phenotypes in UK wild house mice, Mus musculus domesticus. We found strong associations between SNPs in various MHC and cytokine-coding loci on both immune measures (antibody concentration and cytokine production) and on infection phenotypes (infection with mites, worms and viruses). Our study provides a comprehensive view of how polymorphism of immune-related loci affects immune and infection phenotypes in naturally infected wild rodent populations

    Understanding student preferences for one to one writing appointments post-pandemic

    The Writing@Liverpool scheme at the University of Liverpool is a near-peer service, which provides students with the opportunity to book one to one appointments with an academic writing tutor. All Writing@Liverpool tutors are currently studying for their PhD and offer support to students with planning assignments, being critical, structuring their writing, understanding tutor feedback and referencing. When launched in 2019, all appointments took place in-person in the university library. When Covid-19 hit in March 2020, the service moved online, with appointments taking place over Microsoft Teams. However, with this, we noticed a drop in appointment bookings. Within this study, an online survey was conducted, and the 701 responses analysed to investigate students’ preferences in relation to the delivery of one to one writing appointments post-pandemic. The results indicated a preference for in-person appointments to be available, with 55.8% of the respondents choosing this. The main factor was the preference for communicating in-person as it allows for more questions and a natural conversation. However, there is clearly still an appetite for appointments to be delivered online, with postgraduate students in particular expressing an interest in this format. Students indicated that the accessibility of appointments for students who are not on campus regularly as the biggest factor for choosing online as their preference. It can be concluded that a hybrid model, where students can choose between the two appointment types is most appropriate, which along with increased targeted promotion to specific faculties and year groups, should increase the usage of the service

    Magnesium batteries attract interest as alternative energy-storage devices because of elemental abundance and potential for high energy density. Development is limited by the absence of suitable cathodes, associated with poor diffusion kinetics resulting from strong interactions between Mg2+ and the host structure. V2PS10 is reported as a positive electrode material for rechargeable magnesium batteries. Cyclable capacity of 100 mAh g−1 is achieved with fast Mg2+ diffusion of 7.2x10−11–4x10−14 cm2 s−1. The fast insertion mechanism results from combined cationic redox on the V site and anionic redox on the (S2)2− site; enabled by reversible cleavage of S−S bonds, identified by X-ray photoelectron and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Detailed structural characterisation with maximum entropy method analysis, supported by density functional theory and projected density of states analysis, reveals that the sulphur species involved in anion redox are not connected to the transition metal centres, spatially separating the two redox processes. This facilitates fast and reversible Mg insertion in which the nature of the redox process depends on the cation insertion site, creating a synergy between the occupancy of specific Mg sites and the location of the electrons transferred

    Understanding knowledge, attitude and perception of Rift Valley fever in Baringo South, Kenya: A cross-sectional study

    Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a mosquito-borne viral hemorrhagic disease that affects humans and livestock. In Kenya, the disease has spread to new areas like Baringo County, with a growing realization that the epidemiology of the virus may also include endemic transmission. Local knowledge of a disease in susceptible communities is a major driver of prevention and control efforts. A cross-sectional survey using a structured questionnaire was conducted in five locations of Baringo South that had reported RVF cases during the last outbreak to determine the knowledge, attitude and perception of the predominantly agro-pastoralist community to RVF. Knowledge of RVF clinical signs, transmission, risk factors and prevention all contributed to the overall knowledge score. Additionally, the respondents’ attitude was based on their awareness of the threat posed by RVF and preparedness to take appropriate measures in case of suspected infection. Out of the 300 respondents, 80% had heard about the disease, however, only 9.6% attained at least half of the overall knowledge score on RVF. Nevertheless 86% recognized the threat it posed and knew the appropriate action to take in suspected human and livestock cases (positive attitude ). Factors significantly associated with a better knowledge of RVF included higher education level, being Maasai, higher socio-economic index, old age and history of RVF in household members and livestock. Being Maasai and a higher socio-economic index were significantly associated with a positive attitude. The low level of knowledge exhibited by the respondents could be due to progressive loss of interest and information associated with a prolonged inter-outbreak period. This calls for regular awareness campaigns during these periods. More emphasis should also be put on educating communities on the role played by the mosquito vector in the epidemiology of RVF. The most promising routes of disseminating this information are radio and community gatherings

    The APU Writing and Reading Corpus 1979–1988 is a diachronic corpus of British English schoolchildren’s data at Year 6-level (primary school, 10-11 year-olds). The materials are based on a sample of the Language Performance Surveys carried out from 1979 to 1988 by the Assessment of Performance Unit (APU), UK National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER). More specifically, the APU corpus consists of two major components: writings by children (what we have called “School Scripts”) and writings for children (what we have called “Basal Readers”, in line with work by Biber and associates (Reppen 1994, Biber et al. 2002)). The School scripts contains two different types of text-types: argumentative-cum-persuasive writing and narrative writing. Overall, they amount to 522 scripts and 92,728 words distributed as shown in Table 1. Table 1. These are excerpts taken from published children’s books dating from 1979, 1982 and 1988. These sources amount to ca. 15,500 words. All but two basal readers are British sources. The two printed in US are the NFER basal reader “The Flying Machine” and the supplementary source “The Golden Apples of the Sun”.
