"Now this is Hayk who begat Aramaneak, his son in Babylon. And 
Aramaneak begat many sons and daughters, of whom the eldest was 
Aramayis. And Aramayis begat many sons and daughters, of whom the eldest 
was Amasya . .. Now these are the names of the earliest men who founded the 
race in Babylon and who went across the northern regions of the land of 
Ararad. For Hayk set out from Babylon with his wife and sons and all his 
retinue ... 
And there ruled over them Zareh, a son of [one of] Aramaneak's sons, a 
powerful man and skillful with the bow; then Armong; then Sarhang; then 
Shavash; then Pamavas. 
This last begat Bagam and Bagarat, and Bagarat begat Biurat, and Biurat 
begat Aspat. And the sons of Bagarat succeeded to their inheritance in the 
regions of the west .. . 
At that time Arshak (king of the Parthians) made his son, called Arshak 
the Less, king over the land of Armenia and the city of Mtsum. And he 
assigned to him as borders Aruastan by the land of the Tachiks, and the land 
of Syria and Cappadocia by Cilicia as far as the shore of the great western 
sea, and on the northern side to the great Caucasus Mountain .. . 
He sent him from Mtsum to the west with greatest army... Bagarat 
P'arazean, one of the descendants of Aramaneak and great noble, went out to 
meet him with a large army. He offered him gifts of gold and silver, adorned 
him with the tunic and stole, crowned him with the hereditary crown, sat him 
on the throne of gold inlaid with precious stones, and gave him his daughter 
. .

King Arshak made him [Bagarat] aspet of the land of Armenia, that's, 
prince and chief commander of the entire kingdom, and father and brother of 
the king, and to him he gave the authority of that power. "1 
This is amalgam from Primary History. Using other more detailed 
accounts, it can be formulated like this: in the early years of the 3rd c. B.C. 
northern and southern kingdoms of Kartli (Iberia) were united under 
Phamavaz from Mtskheta (northern kingdom), the first king of the 
Phamavazid dynasty. Azo, the southern sovereign, seems to be ki1led in 
skirmish. Phamavaz, now victorious, gratefully adopted his sons and kept 
them within the native domains as the dukes (residing somewhere in Klarjeti 
/now in Turkey/ and possessing some more appanages in Speri/ Ispir 
district/). Bagrat (Bagadat) Phamavaziani, Bivrat (Biurat), Sumbat (Smbat) -
these are the names of the first men from Bagrationi ruling clan. Sumbat 
revolted against Mtskheta overlordship, supported by Artaxias; and thus 
Vitaxate of Gogarene had emerged.2 
Some coins provide more arguments for the genealogy. These silver 
pieces are mistakenly attributed as a produce of Persis. 
The currency of Persis (250 B.C. untill the rise of the Sassanids) consists 
of silver. The denominations are the tetradrachm, the drachm and smaller 
pieces. The inscriptions are in Aramaic, degenerating into Peh]evi. The 
debased and frequently illegible script, occuring on the coins of which the art 
is still good, indicates that the coins are the work of the Greeks who did not 
understand the language. 3 
This group is thought to be headed by the pieces of certain Bagadat.

ALaHIA - "of the Gods" or "of divine origin"). 
It is suggested that the coins represent the same man; and if so no. I, on 
which the inscription is complete, shows that he must have been Bagadat. 
Then Biurat was his father, and the word Bar, for son, is omitted, as in 
modem Persian.3 
The coins are not much earlier than Antiochus III.9 
Bagadat as a satrap of Persis is not mentioned in records; that is why his 
Persian identity is still slightly suspected. 10 But fire-temple type11seems to be 
very Persian: Polyaenus mentions a satrap of Persis called "Of3op(os; he is 
Vahuberz, and he has a temple on his Rev. Many other rulers of Persis 
followed him. 12 And the intricacy of the relations between the srr1al1 groups is 
too great to allow of their being divided up13 (Pl. II). Yet, none of the Persians 
is seated on throne, that leaves our Nl beyond the group. 
The coin evidence and narrative clearly demonstrate that throughout the 
last half of the 3rd c. B.C. Bagrat Pharnavaziani, duke of Klarjeti, issued the 
coins with proud legend - BaGaDaT FRaTaRaKa BIURat ZI ALaHIA. NI is 
designed originally, while fire-temple type was, perhaps, borrowed from the 
silver pieces of Vahuberz, who ruled in Persis. Neither satrapal gannent, nor

fire-temple were alien to Iberians, who worshiped Armazi - Ahuro-Mazdao, 14 
and used to be dressed in Iranian fashion (Strabo XI. 3.3.). 
What conclusions are we to draw from all this? 
A genealogy of early Bagratids is as follows - Bivrat (Biurat), son of 
Azo• Bagrat (Bagadat), son of Bivrat• Bivrat, son of Bagrat• Sumbat 
(Smbat) Bivritiani .. . 
Saunnag, the next king of Iberia, had to deal with a revolt of the dukes 
(Eristavi). 15 Was ambitious Bagrat among them, did he secure southern 
principality for himself? Perhaps, we need more records for the ful] picture. 
But still, his coins are present, ordered, maybe, to the nearest Greek 
community. And that could be either Phasis, or -Trapezus.

INFLUENCE OF MIDDLE PLATONISM ON EVALUATION OF GREEK PHILOSOPIDC 
SYSTEMS IN "PROTREPTICUS" OF CLEMENT OF .ALEXANDRIA 
There exist two different opinions in the scientific literature on the influence of Greek philoso-
phy on thinking of Clement of Alexandria. 
Some researchers consider that the author evaluates different Greek philosophic systems only 
on the principle how they comply with the objectives of Christian creed and preaching of Clement. 1 
Some others think that to analyze thoughts of Clement of Alexandria it is most important to 
take into consideration spiritual and cultural environment of his epoch while talking about the author's 
evaluation of Greek philosophic systems.2 Along with other philosophic influences these researchers 
pointed to the influence of the 2nd century Platonism, or as it is called in the specialist literature of Mid-
dle Platonism,3 they disclosed some parallels between the representatives of Platonism and Clement's 
thoughts. In specialist literature, R.C.Cilla in his monograph "Clement of Alexandria" takes into con-
sideration "protrepticus" along with other works by Clement of Alexandria. His conclusions are based 
on the analyses of the entire world outlook of Clement of Alexandria. 
We aware the considerations of these researchers and we'll try in our paper to strengthen this 
viewpoint with additional arguments. We'll try to do this by the comparing the author's evaluation of 
Plato, Pythagorean, Epicures, and Aristotle Stoic systems fixed in "protrepticus" with the outlooks of 
some representatives of Middle Platonism on the same philosophical schools. In result of such analysis, 
in our opinion, may be specified and made complete by the supposition, that Clement's considerations 
on Greek philosophic schools proceed .directly from Platonic schools of the 2nd century. 
It is mentioned in the specialist literature that similarity of Clement's considerations on Greek 
philosophic schools with Middle Platonism is outlined around several questions: 
1. attaching preference to Plato and Pythagorean teaching; 
2. refusing Epicures "Atheistic Philosophy"; 
3. refusing Peripathetics system, who consider that divine mind spreads only till the moon in the 
world; 
4. Refusing Stoic materialism.4 
Let's discuss this similarity according to the text "protrepticus" we are interested in. It is known that 
among the Greek philosophers Plato was the most authoritative for Clement.5 In chapter 6 "protrepti-
cus" Clement directly appeals to Plato to assist him in his search for the Lord. "Who may I choose to 
support me in my search? - Maybe, Plato, then, how can we find God, Plato?" Immediately after these 
words Clement cites a passage from "Timaios" (28 c ): "It is difficult to find father and creator of all and 
when you find it is difficult to reveal him to all", and next fragment: "because it's impossible to describe 
him" .6 Both citations are considered important because they express the basic of Clement's ideas on the 
Lord.

The same is expressed by one more quotation by Clement: "As he (Plato) says: God is like no one 
else is, that is why no one can know for sure what God is like on the basis of likeness" . After that the 
author again appeals to Plato to search for God together: "It is good, Plato, you have reached the Truth, 
but don't say, no to me, join me in my search for God". Clement points that the source of Plato's wis-
dom proceeds from Holy Script (Old Testament): "As for your laws, being true and your belief in God, 
here you were assisted by Jews themselves". 7Consequently, the Christian author does not refute Plato, 
on the contrary, he reequites divine origin of his philosophy. 
It is seen from the text of "protrepticus", another philosopher considered by Clement to be a finder 
of Truth and worth of recognition is Pithagoras. In his opinion, Plato and Pythagoras managed best of 
all to approach Moses doctrine and to penetrate into the elements of Truth. Clement says: "We should 
not hide Pythgorians' doctrine either, who say God is one and is not beyond cosmic order as some con-
sider but he is in it, he fully exists in the entire system (circle), rules over all created, he is a unity of all 
epochs, Lord of his own forces, light of all his deeds in heaven and father of all, mind and spirit of the 
entire circle (system), moving source of every thing. These words were written by their authors in result 
of divine inspiration. We have selected them. They are enough to get comprehensive knowledge on 
God, to assist all who can apprehend Truth even a little".8 
The tendency for selecting Plato and Pythgoras from the Greek philosophers as finders of supreme 
truth is characteristic to Middle Platonism and is one of the peculiar trains of the 2nd century thought. 
Both Clement's "protrepticus" and the works of Middle Platonism representatives mention these two 
philosophers together, as creators of brilliant doctrines: Plutarchus respects Pythagoras and Plato as 
they have formed the doctrines of wiiverse harmony and immortality of soul.9 Taurus praises the 
method of Pythagoras' teaching,10 Teon of Smirna points that Plato has often followed Pythgoras' doc-
trine, 11 Tirrel Maxirnus calls Plato "Interpreter of God" and "prophet" ; 2 this very religious interpreta-
tion of Plato follows across some important works by the representatives of Middle Platonism, such as: 
"Didaskalikos" by Albinus, "Questiones Platonicae" by Plutarchus, "De Platone et eius dogmate" by 
Apuleus. Another Christian apologist Justine presents a picture of Platonic schools of the 2nd century. 
Like Clement he was educated there. "I was deep engaged in studying Plato's doctrines, as hard as it 
was possible; I advanced every day and was successful in studying them. all my being was full of 
thoughts about bodiless creatures and studying of the ideas put new essence to my mental capacity. I 
thought that soon I'll become wise. I was naive in thinking that I may so see the Lord, as this is an ob-
jective of Plato philosophy"13 Proceeding from the said above, I think one can see in Clement i~terpre-
tation of Plato and Pythagoras from the religious viewpoint and such great recognition of their doc-
trines. 
We come across refusal of Epicurian system in the following passage of Clement's "protrepticus": 
"I'll exclude Epicurus philosophy from my mind with great pleasure, as he is famous for his disrespect 
for God and thinks that God doesn't take care of universe".14 Such rejection exists in Middle Playonism 
as well. For example, Aticus in one of his preserved fragments refuse Epicurus together with Aristotle, 
because both philosophers think God does not take care of man.15 
In ''protrepticus" Clement expresses negative attitude to Aristotle's consideration either, according 
to which divine mind spreads only till the moon" "First he says that the divine mind spreads only to the 
place where the moon is, then thinking that space is God, he contradicts himself when states that what is 
devoid of divine is God".16 Here Clement brings Peripathetic doctrine to witness this: Aristotle says17 
that God does not directly take care of earthly objects and compares God with Persian King: as the 
provinces of his Empire were managed not directly by the King but by his satraps, the same with the 
lowest spheres of wiiverse are governed by the forces determined by God the sa~e supposition was also

expressed by Stoian Xrizipus, as Plutarchus says.18 According to Plutarchus, Xrizipus considered that 
though the universe was managed on the whole well, there existed something that the divine mind did 
not take care of and the spheres were ruled by demons. This author also compared this with the Persian 
King and his satraps. These considerations according to which supreme God charged lower gods with 
care for men, probably follow from Plato's "Timaios" where in the end of appeal to astral gods, demi-
urge charges them with care for men. At the same time, Plato criticizes those who rejects that God takes 
care of man

and says that a divine spirit penetrates even in small things.20 Thus, we can suppose that 
Clement's attitude to. Aristotle is like the consideration of Aticus, representative of Middle Platonism 
who reject Epicurus and Aristotle as in Aristotle's opinion God does not take care ofman.21 
Clement's attitude to Stoians is clearly seen in "protrepticus", in the following quotation" "I won't 
also avoid stoics, which consider that divine will penetrate into everything, even in the lowest ones they 
put shame to philosophy".22 
Such attitude to Stoian materialism we may also see in Middle Platonism. Plutarchus severely criti-
cized Xrizipus' consideration as if gods are material and immoral.23 Albinus also argues with Stoians 
and proves that God has no body: "if God has a body, then it should be a unity of substance and form . .. 
but it is senseless to suppose that God involves substance and form, as in this case God won't be su-
preme, therefore, God had no body. In addition, if hi has a body, then he is created from substance, in 
this case it should be either fire or water, earth air or something formed from all these elements; but 
nothing is the main one from these elements. Moreover, it should have been formed later than sub-
stance, if it is formed from substance. As all these conclusions are senseless, we should consider God 
having no body. It is clear that ifhe has no body than he is subject to decay, is created and experienced 
change. And to attribute all these features to him has no sense.24 
We have conducted analysis to compare the considerations of Clement of Alexandria on the Greek 
philosophy expressed in his "protrepticus" with those presented by some representatives of Middle 
Platonism. This specifies the supposition concerning the influence of Middle Platonism on his thinking. 
In our opinion we can suppose based on this comparison that while evaluating Greek philosophical 
systems Clement experienced the influence of Middle Platonism. And his evaluations are dictated not 
only by the author's Christian belief but they also had their own philosophical sources as well. In our 
opinion, Middle Platonism was one of the sources for establishing Clement's considerations concerning 
Greek philosophy. Talking about Cleµient's evaluation of Greek Philosophy we should, probably, take 
into account this influence of Platonism characteristic to the epoch.

ZUR GESCHLECBTEROPPOSITION IN DEM KIRKE-MYTHOS 
In Satyrica von Petron vereinbart Kirke, die sich ihre Liebhaber aus dem Volk sucht, mit Encolp ein 
Rendezvous. Im vorliegenden Abschnitt (Petron., Sat. 126, 1- 139, 5) werden folgende drei Phasen der 
Entwicklung hervorgehoben: 
1) Begegnung mit Kirke. Der Versuch der Liebesvereinigung, der we gen der lrnpotenz Encolps in 
Frustration endet (126, 12-128, 4; 131, 8 - 132, 5). 
2) Encolps Seelenzustand und seine Reflexionen (128, 5-130,6, 132,6-133,1). 
3) Versuche zur Heilung der Impotenz (130,7-131,7, 133,2-138,4). 
Als Vorbild diirfte Petron den homerischen Kirke-Mythos haben. Darauf deuten vor allem die 
Heldennamen an - Kirke, eine Frau adliger Herkunft, und Encolp, der sich als Sklave Polyaenus 
ausgibt. Hier ist also ein homerischer Beiname benutzt. 
Auf den ersten Blick ist das alles, was Satyrica mit Homers Epos zu tun hat. 
Bei Petron lehnt Kirke ihre gottliche Abstammung ab und stellt sich folgenderma8en vor: 
.. . 'ita ' inquit 'non dixit tibi ancilla mea me Circen vocari? non sum quidem Solis progenis, nee mea 
mater dum placet, labentis mundi cursum detinuit (127, 32.). 
Wie es sich aus dem Text ergibt, sind fur Petron mehrere Aspekte des Mythos bekannt. 
Kirke erscheint Encolp wie aus einer Wolke hervortretender Mond: 
itaque miranti et toto mihi caelo clarius nescio quid relucente libuit deae nomen quaerere (127, 31-
32); delectata ilia risit tam blandum, ut videretur mihi plenum os extra nubem tuna proferre (127, 1-2). 
Kirkes Hexenmacht ist auch nicht erstaunlich. Die Bewohnerinnen der Stadt, wo Kirke wohnt, 
konnen doch den Mond vom Himmel herunterziehen: 
. . . 'solent ' inquit 'haec fieri, et praecipue in hac civitate, in qua mu/ires etiam lunam deducunt ' 
(130, 23-25). 
Kirkes bezaubernde Stimme klingt wie die der Sirenen: 
... canta gratia conciliabat vocem /oquentis, tam dulcis sonus pertemptatum mulcebat aera, ut pu-
tares inter auras canere Sirenum concordiam (127, 29-32). 
Die Gefahr, die Kirkes Geliebte im Fall der Liebesvereinigung bedroht, ist Petron auch gut bekannt: 
quae stregis comederunt nervos tuos (134, 25).1 
Das Thema der Irnpotenz, deren Ursache die Zauberin aus Aeaea sein mul3, ist noch an Ovids Elegie 
3, 7 orientiert:

Man vermutet, dal3 Petron explizit auf Ovids Vorbild hinweist. 2 Aber die Nuancen des Mythos, die 
in Satyrica behandelt sind, lassen uns vermuten, dal3 das lmpotenzmotiv das Zentralmotiv des 
archaischen Mythos gewesen sein konnte. 
Wenn man die Korpersymbolik in Betracht ziehen wiirde, konnte man sehen, dal3 sowohl der 
Phallos, als auch die Waffe, ein Merkmal des Ranges ist. Hier ist die mannliche Potenz konzentriert.

Iher kommen selbstverstandlich solche ittyphalische Figuren wie Hermen, mit denen die Griechen ihr 
Territorium markierten, in den Sinn. Auch die Babylonier gaben ihren Grenzsteinen phallische Form. 3 
Nach der verbreiteten Meinung, haben ittyphalische Herma-Figuren ursprilnglich Fruchtbarkeit 
symbolisieren sollen. 4 In unserem Jahrhundert wurde statt dessen eine andere Deutung gesucht, 
namlich aus den Beobachtungen, die die Ethologen an Affen gemacht haben: Bei vielen Affenarten hat 
man beobachtet, dal3 einige Mannchen an der Peripherie ihrer Gruppe "Wache" zu sitzen pflegen. Die 
"Wachenden" stellen dabei mannliche Geschlechtsorgane zur Schau. Nahert sich ein fremder 
Artgenosse, wird der Penis auf gerichtet und rhythmisch bewegt. Es handelt sich um ein 
lmponierverhalten, das der Revierkenzeichnung dient. Die Wissenschaftler haben sofort ahnliche 
wachhaltende Figuren, namlich die antiken Hermen damit verglichen. So kam man dazu, daB solche 
ittyphalische Figuren lallturelle Nachahmungen einer angeborenen Verhaltensweise und nicht aus der 
Fruchtbarkeits-Symbolik zu erklliren sind. s Der A.kt, der allein "Frucht" erzeugt, die Vereinigung mit 
dem Weiblichen, wird mit den Phalloi gerade nicht angedeutet. Nicht mit der Spitze im Erdreich, 
sondern aufrecht stehen sie da, sie sind "erreicht", "geweckt", sie zeugen nicht, sie imponieren.6 
Der aufgerichtete Phallos, der in sich einen aggressiven Inhalt tragt, kann im mythopoethischen 
Denken durch die Waffe ersetzt werden. 
In der archaischen jagerischen Gesellschaft ist die spezifische mannliche Rolle sowohl durch das 
sexuelle, als auch durch das jagerisch-kriegerische Verhalten definiert. Mannliche Aggressivitat und 
mannliche Sexualitat sind aufs engste miteinander verbunden und lassen sich kaum voneinander 
trennen. 
Stock oder Keule, Speer oder Schwert, Revolver oder Kanone, die Waffe ist von steinzeitlichen 
Zeichnungen bis zur modernen Reklame als Attribut der Mannlichkeit gleichberechtigt und fast 
austauschbar mit den Geschlechtsmerkmalen. Schlagen und Treffen, Sto13en und Durchbohren, all dies 
wird damit ambivalent, wie es auch in der Sprache zweideutig geworden ist. 
Der Entwaffnete und der Entmannte bilden also eine und dieselbe semantische Reihe. 
Wenn man an die verschnittenen Priester der Kybele, Artemis von Ephesos oder Dea Syria aus 
Hierapolis zuriickdenkt, sieht man, daB die Kastraten in den Riten der Grol3en Mutter einen ganz 
besonderen Platz einnehmen.7 Vermutlich versuchten die verschnittenen Kultdiener den mythischen 
Geliebten der Gottin auf diese Weise nachzuahmen.8 
Die Mutter Gottin, die in den alteren Mythen keinen Gemahl hat und immer einen neuen Partner 
erwartet, kann als die "hirnmlische Prostituierte" betrachtet werden. Das Schicksal aller ihrer Geliebten 
ist der Untergang ihrer Mannlichkeit, damit das Weibliche in der Gestalt der Gottin allmachtig ersteht. 
Diese Herrin der Berge und Wildnisse fordert das Opfer der Mannlichkeit. Das ist die Gefahr, die alle 
ihre Geliebten bedroht.9 
Die Mythen der GroBen Mutter konnen in zwei Gruppen geteilt werden: diejenigen, die Uber 
Selbstentmannung berichten und die, in denen die Geliebten der Gottin vom Eber zerrissen werden. 
So wurden Osiris und Tammuz von dem Wildschwein zerfleischt, Adonis und Attis im Kampfe mit 
dem Eber vom Zahne des Tieres todlich getroffen. 
So koexistieren diese zwei, auf den ersten Blick ganz verschiedene Mythen und solche Koexistenz 
ist am besten aus der Schwein-Symbolik zu erklaren.

Das Schwein. eines der altesten und der wichtigsten Tiere, galt als das fruchtbarste unter den 
Haustieren. Aus diesem Grund ist vielleicht sein runder Korper schon im Frilhneolyth als Symbol der 
animalischen und vegetativen Fruchtbarkeit geworden. Die Schweinfigiirchen, auf denen Weizen 
dargestellt ist, wurden im Dnestertal in der Nahe des schwarzen Meers aufgegraben. Der radio-
karbonischen Untersuchung nach, sind sie auf 5500 v. Chr. datiert. In Rumanien und in 
Nordgriechenland gefundene mehrere Vasen, die Schweinefiguren darstellten, weisen darauf hin, wie 
grofi die Rolle dieses Tieres im Kult war. 
Wahrscheinlich wurde nach der agrarischen Revolution paleolythische "schwangere Gottin" in die 
Gottheit der Fruchtbarkeit des Bodens, die man mit der Sau assoziierte, transformiert. 
All dies wurde in der Sprache widerspiegelt. Die Fruchtbarkeit ist die Hauptbedeutung des 
indoeuropaischen Tem1inus Sau, der vom * su Stamm abgeleitet ist, genauso wie anderer Worter, die 
von gleichem Stamm entstanden sind. 
In Wirklichkeit konnte man, meines Erachtens, in den Mythen der entrnannten und vom Eber 
zerrissi!nen Heiden, einen und denselben Tiefinhalt ergreifen. Die GroBe Mutter, die keinen Gemahl 
hat, braucht von Zeit zu Zeit die mannliche Energie aufzusaugen, um ihre fruchtbare Weiblichkeit 
\viederaufzufrischen. 
Mit Rilcksicht auf solche Information ist ein ganz neuer Hintergrund in der Kirke-Geschichte zu 
suchen und der Mythos konnte neuartig interpretiert werden. 
Folgen wir der Homererzahlung: 
Der reife Odysseus besucht seinen GroBvater Autolykos auf Pamassos.

So ist er ein "markierter" Held. An dieser Wunde erkennt ihn die Amme Eurykleia. 
In diesem Abschnitt ist sowohl die Lage der Wunde, als auch Odysseus' Alter bemerkenswert. Die 
Aoristform ~~iJaas die von ~~w abgeleitet ist, bedeutet Pubertat, Alter, wenn man in voller Kraft 
und Blute am volllcraftigsten ist, wenn man vollkommene Manneskraft besitzt.10 
Im Knie (To y6vu, poet. 6 youv6s) ist nach Homer die Korperlcraft und die Lebensenrgie 
konzentriert und <lessen Lahmung ist ein Zeichen der Ermattung und der ausgehenden Lebenskraft. 11 
Betrachten v.rir einen der altesten Dionysos-Mythen. Wenn Athena, die Gottin der Weisheit aus 
dem Zeuskopf zur Welt kommt, wird der fri.ihgeborene Dionysos, Gott der Fruchtbarkeit und der 
primaren Instinkte, im Knie seines Vaters ausgetragen, wie es auf dem Krater, der in der Sammlung 
des archaologischen Nationalmuseums zu Tarantas bewahrt und mit 410 v. Chr. datiert wird, 
dargestellt ist. 
Anders zu sagen, wurde die Lebens-/ Manneskraft des Odysseus schon einmal dem Verfall 
ausgesetzt. Im Gegensatz zu Attis oder Adonis war er imstande, die Gefahr zu ilberwinden. 
Besprechen wir jetzt die Episode, die iiber Kirkes und Odysseus' Zusammentreffen berichtet. 
Odysseus wird von Hermes mit einern Gegenmittel "Moly" gegen den Zauber der Kirke versehen 
und gleichzeitig wamt ihn vor anderer Gefahr. Erst wird ihnl die Zauberin die Schale (To Miras) mit 
Kykeon anbieten. Dank Moly aber bleibt Odysseus schadlos. Da soll er <las Schwert (To ciop) ziehen und 
Zauberin mit dem Tod bedrohen. Anstatt <lessen bietet ihnl Kirke an, das Bett mit ihr zu teilen . Bevor 
sich Odysseus auf dieses Angebot einlaBt, soll er von Kirke den "gro8en Eid" fordem, keine weiteren 
Listen gegen ihn zu ersinnen. Andemfalls beraubt die Zauberin den Entwaffneten/ Entkleideten12 der 
Kraft und Mannlichkeit. 13

Es ist ganz klar, daf3 der Held, der in der Pubertat vom Eber unverletzt geblieben ist, wird spater 
diese Gefahr auch ilberwinden. Die antiken Homerzuhorer, denen die Jagdgeschichte, wie auch deren 
Symbolik schon bekannt sein sollte, wilrden dariiber nicht staunen. Wie es schon gesagt wurde, konnen 
die Sagen von den entmannten und von der Sau/ dem Eber zerrissenen Heiden als zwei verschiedene 
Varianten eines Mythos betrachtet werden. 
Nur nach diesen Prilfungen ist Odysseus fur Nekyia bereit. Die Opposition ist neutralisiert. Das 
Schwert Ider Phallos bewaltigt die SchaleNulva. 14 Kirke drangt sich von Odysseus zurilck, verwandelt 
sich aus der Antagonistin in die Helferin und weist auf den Hadesweg. 15 
Aus dieser Analyse des Kirke-Mythos sind folgende SchluBfolgerungen zu ziehen: Einerseits, ist es 
moglich im Mythos die fur die GroBe Mutter charakteristischen Schichten zu rekonstruieren und zu 
vermuten, daf3 die Sau eine mogliche zoomorphische Inkamation von ihr ist. Anderseits, dilrfte man 
schlieBen, daB Odysseus ein ganz neuer Heldentyp ist. Im Gegensatz zu Thamuz, Attis oder Adonis ist 
er bereit, sich mit dem Weiblichen zu treffen, ohne sich ihr untergeordnet zu werden.

Die AuBerung des Trajan zu Neros quinquennium ist in zwei Quellen des 
vierten nachchristlichen Jahrhunderts anzutreffen (Aur. Viet. Caes. 5.2: uti 
merito Traianus saepius testaretur procul differre cunctos principes Neronis 
quinquennio; Aur. Viet. Epit. 5.2: unde quidam prodidere Traianum solitum 
dicere procul dis tare cunctos principes Neronis quinquennio ). Da weiterer 
AufschluB iiber die groBen Taten, die der Kaiser Nero in einem Zeitraum von 
fiinf Jahren vollbracht, geschweige denn iiber das Zitat, in den iibrigen 
Quellen nicht zu erhalten ist, hat die Forschung bislang die Worte Trajans 
nicht verstanden oder verstandlich machen konnen.1 
Es besteht demgegenilber in den Quellen ein belegtes, sogar ein als 
lobenswert belegtes quinquennium, das die ersten fiinf Jahren der Herrschaft 
eines gewissen Kaisers darstellt. Der Kaiser Tiberius ist laut Suetonius (Tib. 
62.1) am friihesten im Jahre 23 an einem Wendepunkt angelangt, bei Tacitus 
(Ann . 6.51.5-6) hingegen sind drei Wendepunkte angefiihrt worden, deren 
erster die Zeit vom Jahre 19 bis zum Jahre 23 erfordert hat. Bei Dio (57.19.1, 
8) kommt Tiberius gerade im Jahre 19 an einem Wendepunkt an, nachdem 
sein Neffe und Adoptivsohn Germanicus gestorben war. Ein vollstandiges, 
fast vollkommenes quinquennium - 5 Jahre und noch 23 Tage - liegt zwischen 
dem Regierungsantritt des Tiberius am 17. September 14 n. Chr. und dem

es fehlt uns nur an einem "Nero." 
Freilich war der offizielle Name des Kaisers "Tiberius Iulius Caesar 
Augustus," demnach nennt seiner Zeitgenbsse Velleius Paterculus ihn 
meistens Ti. Caesar oder Caesar, wenn es urn die Zeit nach seiner Adoption 
durch Augustus im Jahre 4 n. _Chr. geht,2 doch nennt Velleius ihn in der Zeit 
vor der Adoption einmal Ti. Claudius Nero,3 sonst Ti. Nero4 oder Nero.5 Wie 
der Kaiser Trajan auf seinen Vorganger, den wir heute "Tiberius" nennen,6 
Bezug genommen hatte, ist nicht zu beweisen, dennoch ist - wie jedermann 
weiB - ein neuer Adoptivname nicht durchgangig gebraucht worden. 
Die Glaubwurdigkeit des Ausspruches wird durch die bier vertretene 
Ansicht verstarkt. Das Lob ist auch insofern flir ein Problem gehalten worden, 
als es negative Kritik an Augustus iibt, doch kann die Schwierigkeit jetzt 
uberwunden werden, wenn man annimmt, daB der Tod des Augustus der 
Ausgangspunkt der betreffenden Unterhaltungen war und daB Tiberius nur 
mit seinen Nachfolgern verglichen worden ist.
